- Several years ago I did an episode about The Last of Us. However, Grounded Mode didn't exist back then. Time to finally tackle the hardest difficulty on one of the greatest games ever made.

This was a pleasure to put together. Always a treat working with The Last of Us.
Games like this and Bioshock have such great source material - powerful dialogue, stunning environments, great story - that it allows me to be more creative in the edit and hopefully capture some of what makes them special.
Before The Last of Us Part II come out, I must do something else with this classic. Perhaps a live stream of Grounded or Grounded +.
Regarding the next episode, I am toying with something a bit different. Not all brilliant games have trophies. Will make a quick video about it in the next week or two.

I've done Grounded Mode on PS3/4. Very rare these days, i'll play a game multiple times, but i must of played this game on both consoles at least 20 times.

I've beaten The Last of Us on Grounded this week, and right after that I played through Grounded+. This game is simply stunning, it is always a pleasure to play it, even the most challenging parts (eg.: The f*cking sewers). I would like to see you playing through Grounded if you could. Keep doing this awesome work Adam! You're the man.

Missed these videos!!!! For the section at 16:06 I stay in the big room and I use the molotovs at groups of enemys, and I throw bottles at the runners then run up and stab them. As far as the Bloater I use a bomb and keep moving and throwing any bottles at it. David also shoots it and usually you don’t have to waste much ammo on it. Then again I only beat up to Survivor + not grounded yet! LOVE THE PLATINUM SERIES
Solid strategy. With so little supplies on Grounded, I only had the one Molotov that I wanted to save for the bloater. Didn't want to chance getting all the way to the end and die at the final enemy.

Loved the platinum journey u did years ago watched it about 14 times it's that good .so I'm very happy u are doing this. I also got tlou platinum but did the grounded instead of survival first and was quite a challenge but never get bored of this game played it about 10 on ps4 and 4 on ps3 . Can't wait for tlou2
I'm humbled you enjoyed the original The Last of Us episode so much. Yeah, I could also replay this game over and over and never get bored. I always find something new along the way.

Always a pleasure watching your show, Adam, especially when you show me tactics I wish I had known during my 3 (or 4) Grounded playthroughs (you can run past the damn Dam encounter, why didn't I know this). I just wish I could have advised you to use David as a meat shield so you can knife the infected and save some ammo.

Couple of weeks ago i got not only the Platinum, but the 100% of the trophies for this game. Your Platinum journey gave me the inspiration to do it

I have just beaten Grounded mode myself and holy cow, what a challenge. After I did it myself, I got to say that my respect for you has increased greatly. I literally went mad during the Financial District and was stuck there for 6-7 hours, probably because I was very conservative regarding ammunition, molotovs etc.
Hats off, man, and this is an amazing episode!

And yes, indeed - the Financial District and the part where you have to get a card, activate a generator and then get to a door that can only be opened with said card after running through a lot of enemies, a bloater included, was also extremely bitter.
The Firefly Lab in itself is also pretty difficult, but it was way easier for me since I have conserved a whole lot of ammo on my playthrough.
In hindsight, all previous sections were a bit harder.
All in all, it's a challenge that I'm proud of having beaten, but some parts were just too frustrating for me to redo it.
Other than that, I also wanted to say that I really love your videos and I admire all the passion and effort that goes into them. The effect of that is that I can't get tired of watching them, even if it is the 50th time or so (which is the case with the Modern Warfare and, I think, the Shovel Knight platinum journeys).
@@abandon4 The generator room is a roll of the dice once the lights go on. Could get to key card door no problem or get destroyed over and over again.
Firefly Lab is tough. Lot of enemies.

Modern Warfare took fecking ages to beat veteran, haha. Pretty proud of getting through it.
@@AdamMcDermott Yeah, and luck just wasn't on my side in the generator room, haha. I think my rub got even harder since I was focused on getting all optional convos, shiv doors and upgrades in the same run. Shiv doors actually give you an advantage and the upgrades too, but the convos were partly hard to achieve on Grounded.
Also, I seriously admire your endurance, especially in TLOU, Modern Warfare, Shovel Knight, Uncharted 4 and Dead Space 2, but also God Mode in God of War. You get a lot of respect from me for the fact that you don't actually use glitches to obtain a trophy, but much rather do it legitimately.

Thank you. It would feel wrong glitching trophies. Cheapen the rest of the episode. I'd rather admit defeat. Came close with Modern Warfare and Shovel Knight of throwing my hands up and saying I can't do it. Really proud of sticking it out.

About Financial District: enemy spawns are weird. I always kill the first few guys stealthily but then I alert the others while making sure Ellie can see them (and shoot them) while they run towards me (I'm usually on top of the truck opposite where you start, the truck with cover on top). Killing the last guy while he's alert skips a spawn, works great for me :)
Yeah, the spawns get a bit weird. Ellie is a huge help and saved my a few times. Good strategy to be on top of the truck.

You’re actually supposed to get caught in the financial district because Ellie needed to prove herself worthy of the pistol by helping Joel out
The game does indeed want you to get caught but it can be done completely stealth without alerting anyone.
I love rewatching all of your vids adam. I'm not sure if you remember but I commented on a couple vids about me getting the MW2 plat and going for the Uncharted plats. I have finally gotten all the uncharted games platniumed. Now I am going to dive into the last of us. Time for those multiplayer trophies haha. best of luck in your future videos :)

Yikes, it was even worse for you. Really think they should have a checkpoint there but I suppose it is grounded.
My first grounded playthrough I gotta admit it just about broke me. Tactics played waaay more of a role than I ever thought it would. Tbh I got quite a bit of stealth inspiration from your run without guns.

Yeah, Grounded does require a much more measured approach to encounters. Can be interesting.

I still remember when I made my way through Grounded, I think it was actually the last trophy I had left except the journeys and it was amazing. A good chunk of it was probably because I knew the game like the back of my hand at this point I surprisingly found Grounded easier than previous playthroughs, because not relying on listen mode made me a much better player.
Everything came to a halt after that though because I just couldn't bring myself to start the journeys, but June of last year it finally happened as my 100th platinum milestone. It was definitely far from the hardest platinum, but it's still a special one because I finally conquered my demons of "I'm scared to lose all my progress" and it took almost 3 years from the first to the last platinum.
I was only recently made aware of the fact that I didn't even have to finish Grounded at all for the platinum, but back then I think I thought "Survivor+" meant whatever was above Survivor and since the patch was already out by that point I just went with it.
Edit: Just reached the part with David and the bloater. If you're not above using tricks/glitches/whatever or if you're getting desperate, you can get on top of the table where the Bloater spawns where no enemy can reach you. This way you can let David take care of most enemies or at least distract and struggle with them, so you can just swoop in for a knife kill. As for the Bloater, once he spawns and jumps down you just have to shoot his leg and he dies instantly, no idea if it's because he kinda spawns new once he lands, but can't load properly because he's missing the leg or something, but it works.

Yep, learned about the bloater trick after this. Think I'd still do it the regular way, but don't mind others using the trick.
@@AdamMcDermott Yeah, I did it the legit way too when I platinum'd the remake, I mean there are many instances where you can save your resources so you have them for situations like this one, so might as well use them.

another strategy is called the brick and stick, basically you throw a bottle or brick at a enemy and then go in and press square. it kills every enemy in the game as far as i know, yes it is a one shot as well.

Grounded mode hell even surviver feels like the right difficulty to play on it's so much more fun when I can't see enemies through walls any more.
I agree. The more realistic the difficulty the better it is to play in my opinion. Every encounter is so tense.
So fun fact, from what I know, *you're not meant to stealth the segment in Pittsburg.* The story needs Ellie to use her rifle so the game will quietly keep spawning enemies until you get the hint and go loud.
While the story does want Ellie to use the rifle, you can actually stealth the whole section. There are only two waves of enemies. Here is a good example. This is killing the last guy of the first wave and then killing all but the very last guy stealthily. Ellie never fires a shot.

Mr McDermott sir, firstly, as I have mentioned before, amazing videos, well edited and presented. You are very engaging and presentable. The amount of time you put into your videos makes my mind boggle. I really want more content from you, although I realise you can’t do more platinum playthroughs due to the time and quality of game you are playing. What about shorter videos on why you like trophy hunting, more on you and what you get up to, where have you been travelling and why? A chap called staypationt had a channel. You can still find the videos on you tube, but he has sadly stopped now. Think you would be great for similar work.

As for shorter videos, I experimented with that last year and it ended up taking time away from Platinum Journey. Only 3 episodes were made in the whole year. In comparison, 2 episodes this year with a third already filmed.
Shorter unscripted videos seem to be one answer covering the topics you mentioned, "why you like trophy hunting, more on you and what you get up to, where have you been travelling and why?" These wouldn't take much time to shoot/edit. However, I have some reservations because I feel they would lower the overall quality of the channel. When I put out a new video, I want it to be worthy of people's time.
I would like to do live streaming or a podcast in the future which would be the perfect thing for all the informal stuff. One step at a time. Main focus this year is being more consistent with episodes of Platinum Journey. If I can manage that, then I will look to expand.

I play games normally on "normal" but The Last of Us is worth the platinum trophy, so i played it in grounded+. Made 4 playthroughs: first on normal, back when it released on PS4, then couple weeks before the launch of part 2. The third on easy+ to get the collectibles & upgrades and experience the amazing story again and then on grounded+ (thankfully there is a glitch where you can play the new game+ on every difficulty you want). For the grounded+ playthrough I followed a speedrun where the point of it is "just run for it" :D just the forced battles in with Ellie and the financial district were a real pain. It was a real joy to watch the 7 difficulty related trophies pop up (hard, survival, grounded, normal+ - grounded+). Now just the last grind for the Hunter trophy.
Btw.: You can one-shot the Bloater in the coal mine by shooting in its knee or foot, when it's on top of the elevator or just dropped down^^
Thank you for your Videos, they encourage me to tackle some platinum trophies which require to play games on harder/the hardest difficulty (Bioshock, Uncharted are planned next).... but I'm really glad the newer Sony exclusives don't have difficult related trophies :D

Yes. The video won't be done anywhere near the release of the game though. Probably 6-9 months later. I imagine the platinum being a hefty one.

Same here. I played the game years back, but the online trophies are holding me back from adding the game to my official trophy collection.
I wasted too many hours in other games with multiplayer and I think TLOU MP wouldn't be different. 😧

Bit of a tip man there is a glitch that can give you infinite shivs if you have have an upgraded melee weapon all you have to do is pick up a weapon that isn't crafted then pick up your weapon again and it works on both ps3 and ps4

Picking one game is impossible for me. Some of my favourites include The Last of Us, Half-Life 2, God of War, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Limbo, Dragon Quest VIII, Pokemon Red, Ratchet & Clank 2, Spec Ops: The Line...I could go on. So many great games.

This game reminds me of cdda where you rely on kiting zeds into bushes and lighting them on fire for the beginning of the game
the section with David and financial district were the worst on grounded mode for me. Took a devestatingly long time, I feel that pain in the room with David lmao
