  • During a severe storm in June 2007, Pamamax Bulk Carrier, PASHA BULKER, grounded at Newcastle beach, New South Wales, Australia. At Nooby's Beach she was hard aground.
The salvage contract was awarded SVITZER Salvage Australasia based in Sydney. This is the story of the salvors who were determined to gettting the ship off and how they handled the press who kept a close watch on everything they were doing.

That was a one hell of a storm back in 07. Almost as big as the one that ran the MV Sygna aground at Stockton Beach in Newcastle back in 74, I still remember it and I was only 3 at the time. Thanks for the video. From Newcastle.

I live not far from Newcastle, the night of the storm I rescued a guy stuck in his car in a washed out road. I went to Newcastle the next day to see Pasha and it was an incredible sight, like nothing I'd ever seen. It was an amazing job you guys did to get her off the beach.

No mention of Varley Engineering who actually made the Pasha Bulker fit for its trip to Japan. Varleys sealed the cracks pumped out the coal bays and cap welded the cracks because the double bottom was breached and put the stiffeners on the outer hull. Not Svitzer.

These guys did an amazing job saving our beautiful beach and reef from this ship. I use the beach and sail offshore here a few times a week. I dread to think what would have happened if oil or fuel leaked. I can't imagine what would have happened if it's salvage wasn't in capable hands. Apart from a minor gouge in the reef you wouldn't know that it ever happened.

it would be cool to see a photo of the gouge :)

You need to spend the not that much money and make more of these longer videos.
Good branding stuff for Svitzer and wonderful for us. Cheers.

A whole new meaning to the old saying about taking coals to Newcastle!

Typical media hype, making something out of nothing. Probably one of the easier re-floats by this company.
Kind of makes me sick the fact that some people thrive on bad news.
All's well that ends well. Another good job done by Svitzer.
    Thanks for the video.

    Hi Guys
I remember the night the Signa went aground.
Pasha Bulka's situ is quite different.
Silly judgement by the Pash Bulka Capitan. Ya Ya
Signa's Captain had no choice as the storm prevented him from heading further out.
What a nightmare. It was bad enough being on land.
Living at Bar Beach I could see the outer reef outside Susan Gilmore breaking at 50 feet plus.
Hi to everyone I knew in Newcastle

THIS is why single hull tankers were a terrible idea. The double hull design functioned properly preventing a major oil spill.

How are the salvage companies able to contract multiple tugs for such long, and unknown, periods of time? Wouldn't these tugs have work elsewhere as well?

Svitzer are one of the (I think 3) tug companies in Newcastle harbour. They also keep a large barge here. I kayak in the harbour so I see them. Cheers.
