- Adam Savage shows off his Master and Commander costume inspired by his love for the Peter Weir film. And of all the many components to the costume, one unique piece was actually acquired through a fantastic stroke of luck.

I think it's sad that so many people disliked or even hated "Master and Commander". I think it's great. I don't find it slightly boring, and I think the film's pace engrossing, like in "Das Boot".
I enjoyed the movie. However, I am reading through the Patrick O'Brian books and I must say, Aubrey is a great commander but socially awkward and lacking business sense. Maturin was cunning and sly and a skilled dueler. There were aspects of the characters in the book that didn't make it to the big screen. I would have loved to see Crowe and Bettany play these characters again and development them into the men of the books.
By the way, in the books, Jack wore his hat "sideways" as with the tradition of the service. Younger officers wore them front to back. Adam's statement isn't entirely correct.
I personally adore Master and Commander to and I cannot believe they didn't continue the series... But to compare it to Das Boot I have to disagree with :P Das Boot is only one of a couple perfect films in book while Master and Commander is just very good.
Daniel Landers _ I am currently also listening to the Audio books of the Aubrey and Maturin series. The film, which I think is great, is actually very loosely based on a combination of the books ( there are 21 books in the series!)
I love how a lot of sayings we use today are almost demonstrated in the books and show how they came to be in our lexicon.
Now the suit, as for that, I want one, that would give me joy. :-)
most that say dislike it,if you ask them rarely seen it. When I saw it for the first time, I was very disappointed that I didn't see it in the huge movie theater. it IS a masterpiece. A well done look at how it was and GREAT story.
I love both master and commander and das boot amazing movies agreed
Im with you here Adam, a masterpiece and one of the greatest movies ever made
I saw that movie when it came out, too! I was in middle school, but I loved it. "The lesser of two weevils" was the most hilarious thing to me as a kid. I only thought about it again a few years ago and was shocked that nobody else remembered it. I would have loved for it to be a series. The Aubrey Maturin series is such a great roman fleuve, HBO needs to make a series of it.
There is a whole series of books that were written by the author about it !!! Get the books and now that you knowvwhats going on , go to the theater in your mind .
Adam,
If you read the novels Jack Aubrey did not wear his hat from "for to aft" like you were describing. He wore it "athwart ships" in the style of the cockade that you referenced from Napoleon. I believe in the film Russell Crowe also wore it in the old style. This was referenced many times in the Jack Aubrey novels, as a matter of his character to wear the cockade in the old tradition.
Which brings me to your show about flying splinters in ships. You forget to take into account the age of the oak used to build these ships. Often the wood was submerged for years to season and then left to dry in some cases over 20 years, before it was brought to the shipwrights. Then of course the age of the ship and the wood becomes tinder dry, and easily splintered. You also forget to take into account the wood railings, hatches, taffrail, and the various "gingerbread" including the ships boats usually stowed on deck, made from much thinner stocks.
I know you can't revisit the myth, but I believe you got that one completely wrong. Perhaps a discussion with LT. Commander BJ Smith the current commanding officer of the HMS Victory, would change change your mind.
I've been wanting to say that since I saw that episode!
Thanks for the great entertainment through the years!
beat me to it
I just watched the movie because of this video. Damn did I love it. refreshing structure and pace compared to most movies today
Kaaxe oh and having sailed on a huuuge old fashioned ship a bit myself, albeit only for less than a week, I was cringing at seeing the sailors up in the mast fiddling with the sails in stormy weather. I may never have felt as unsafe as I did those times when I was up in that sail myself.
Captain Jack Aubrey wore his hat "amidships" style, the way Nelson wore his, not the "fore and aft" as typically seen with Royal Navy Officers of the time.
I agree. Several times in the books it mentions that he wears his bicorn "amidships". It was considered a bit more old-fashion way of wearing it, and Aubrey was such a fan-boy of Nelson.
You mean to wear it like a Bicorne? Cause that's most likely what it was.
SkaFredrick Yes, exactly that.
Yeah, you can really just wear the bicorne which way you wanted in the navy... or these all flattened out bicorne style hats..
"Athwartships"
Yes Adam, British captains wore their hats forward: Jack scorned this and wore his "athwartship", like his hero Nelson.
read the bloody books!
Or watch the bloody movie :p
His sword belt is the wrong type . someone saw him coming as we used to say about a mark . it allows his thrust type sword to hang too low , and likely will swing between his legs tripping him up on a deck wet with blood and seawater looking a Jake before the fo'csal swabs getting ZERO respect . and yes , I meant Jake not joke . look it up .
Great film, quite underrated.
I think I was 14 when Master and Commander came out, and I saw it at least twice in theaters. I remember the only other person I could talk about it with was an 18-year old, senior girl in my design class who worked at a cheap theater and watched it during her down time because she loved all the burly men on the ship. That aside, it is an amazing film, and I can't understand why so many of my peers seem to have never even heard of it.
agreed good film.
as a sailer i wish i could have a sail on those tall ships and man-o-wars.
Sweat and stains on the jacket. For shame, what would Killick say?! ;-)
+Victory Works
"not on the cloth" -_-
KILLICK! KILLICK THERE
'I done washed it twice this week, didn't I?'
What is soused hog's face!
"Which it will be READY when it's READY"
I know this is an older video, but I just now saw it. On first glance, it looked wrong. Not in what it was, but in both how it is worn and how it's fit. First big thing: It is missing a black neck stock or cravat. That makes the look all off. Next there are the little things: The fit of the trousers should be almost skin tight. The better fit was a sign of the gentry who were able to hire professional tailors. Second, the waistline needs to be a full 6 inches higher.. Third, the cut of the front of the coat is WAY too curved. As for the aging, the stains in the front of the vest are great. This is a subtle thing from having worn a similar outfit on a real boat, look to have more stains on the thighs where you might wipe your hands . Also, not sure if this was done here as I didn't see anything, but the rear where you might sit on something dirty and knees are good places. The waistcoat would not likely show many sweat stains: maybe a little in the armpits or around the collar. The shirt certainly would get sweaty. The jacket? Maaaaaybe in the crease of the armpit but not anywhere else.
Agreed, it hangs like a sack. Also it's not his everyday uniform like Adam wanted, it's his formal dress uniform!
Adam really sells the uniform. I'm impressed.
Never know he was a fan of this film as well. How can you not love this man
Awesome!!
Master and Commander is one of my favourite films (I love the books too).
Adam, it's so cool that you have that outfit. :D
I'd love a coat like that...
Adam always has the coolest items. I'm super jelly
Adam goes to such great lengths to get the exact thing he sees in the movies, it's amazing!
I like that belt a lot. It looks just like one that I wore when I was a boyscout.
Wow, you did a great job working blind. It's a shame he didn't follow your advice and get it tailored to him. Do you have a website? I'd love to see more of your work.
It's a damn shame about that movie... It was actually a /good/ attempt at starting a series. Since then we've gotten dozens of film franchises, with only a handful actually being really good... And yet one of the most historically authentic and just plain interesting films from the last two decades has been basically ignored by the populace at large.
"... just the first ten minutes, the cannon battle,..."
I think this one scene won them the academy award for sound editing. Turn up the volume and it's like you're there. It's in-fucking-credible!
i am impressed. It looks nice. Love these videos. Keep them coming!
Love the Story about the Sword 😊
sweet! master and commander is one of my favorite movies!
Love these videos. Been a fan of MythBusters for years. Thanks for showing us all this Adam!
I have those same leather boots, I bought them for a Solomon Kane costume for NYC ComiCon.
ArtMonster Solomon Kane! Yeah!
A few more and Adam will have enough to wear a new costume everyday for a month :D On a serious note I'm glad he brought up how he goes about finding props and prop info. Love these videos!
Awesome costume, Adam! Just out of curiosity, have you read any of the Jack Aubrey novels by Patrick O'Brian?
I love these videos! Please keep them up~!
Great movie and the books are excellent!
man,i want to meet Adam so much!
never stop making those videos!
A costume museum will now be needed xD
Why is it Jamie and Adam Tested? I never see Jamie on this channel.
"Jamie" is industry slang for an annoying mandatory host. Just saying.
hes on a few videos and articles but he doesn't really enjoy it and actually has jobs to do other than adam who is basically unemployed lol
rich unemployed*
The movie isone of my favorites!!!!
This is so cool.
I know what you mean! I'm the chief prop master for my cosplay group and every week, I spend almost $600 dollars on material, even though 90% of it is recycled. I had to build a second toolshed to accommodate my welding/painting away from the workshop in my garage. IT'S NEVER ENOUGH.
Adam, if I had that gear I would never wear anything else. Beautiful
Great video
Please do a museum show of your stuff adam
It's just for show, those buttons are only for the turbback. If they were cold they'd put a greatcoat on over the top.
damn insubordinate!
Commander: one plain epaulette on the left shoulder
Of course, by the time HMS Surprise took on the Acheron in "Far Side of the World" (Book 10), Jack had long since been rated a post captain (i.e., way back in Book 2). The movie is titled "Master and Commander" (Book 1 of the series), but it's actually an amalgam of stories from much later in Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" series.
@@WelshRabbit Thanks for reacting, looking at it the second book in the "Aubrey-Maturin" series is indeed called Post Captain (would then be one plain epaulette on the right shoulder and also guildings if you live and fight in dress uniform). The book series tries to be "Pretty accurate, at least in terms of authenticity",
Halloween must be easy for Adam
is that a nostromo crew helmet on the desk behind you? talk about that! alien is my favorite movie.
Dude Norman Chan rocks. He doesn't need no cred cause he invented it.
Adam, if you like the movie, please, PLEASE read the books! They are wonderful.
Cool costume man.
Why is this vid not in the playlist?
anyone else notice the Admiral Akbar head on back wall?
O.O He's an Adam-iral! haha
Morgan Novak 'he who would pun would pick a pocket'.
That is a good one, though!
I'd rather be a lowly fo'csal swab . less work !!!!
Good Work brother.....
Tony Stark has a basement full of Mk-* suits...Adam Savage has a basement full of awesome costumes! :)
Actually, in the books, Jack Aubrey shipped his hat athwartship, not fore and aft. He was old school, like his hero, Nelson.
I'm really curious about how the lamp in the background with all the bulbs is wired up. I've got a similar problem with a project i'm working on for comuter controlled christmas lights and the best thing i've come up with is to put ring terminals on all the wires and bolt them together. Any chance I can get some info on how that's wired up? :)
I didn't think this was Crowe's costume. He was carrying a bit of weight in the movie and Adam would have swam in the original.
The books are in Audible if you can't read. There's no excuses.
hannah kittell is my step-aunt lmao, i only met her once since she lives in new york, shes kind of rude sometimes. but really cool to talk too!
How can I contact Adam so that I can educate him on naval chapeau de bras?
I want to see Jamie's "Man Cave" now!!! lol
I wonder if Adam has ever read the Aubrey/Maturin series?
That's not his everyday uniform, that's his formal dress uniform, hence all the gold braid.
The brown note is the same as the spooky note. no?
norm had a cool shirt on, was it boba fett, ig-88, zuckuss and bossk?
Adam should get a bunch of mannequins in his shop and put all his costumes on display! :)
If you ever put your collection in a museum I will go. No matter where on the planet you stage it. (and hopefully it's in the continental US but a trip anywhere would be cool ... even make it part of a road show?) ... Still ... I would go ... and also ... you have ruined my life forever. I know too much of your process to NOT start making my own props. :D Inching towards the dark side ... or side of light ...
I can't wait till Adam dresses in this on a mythbusters sea/ocean episode. Also doesn't he get sea sick?
Just out of curiosity doesn't Russel Crowe in the role of Jack Aubrey wear riding boots and a bit different "wear around every day" uniform? I mean I remember him wearing a uniform without all the gold ribbons... Might be me being wrong though...
i always like watching these :D
Just sad it took me so long to watch the movie. Still dumbstruck when I think about what an incredible masterpiece it is. [seriously annoyed that with how much I hated on Pirates, NOT ONE PERSON told me to watch Master and Commander!]
Probably because not too many watched the movie and many found it slow or boring. I also think that the advertising made you expect a different movie that was more focused on action/adventure. While I didn't think that it was bad I didn't know what to make of it when I watched it back then. However, I began to like the movie more and more with each subsequent viewing after realizing that it wasn't meant as your typical piece of entertainment.
Love these vids you can tell who isn't comfortable in front of the camera tho Hint it's not Adam lol
I know it's 100% authentic and everything, but the blade on that just doesn't sing. He should get a blade from Baltimore Knife & Sword which would 'sching' when pulled out of the scabbard. :)
( Full disclosure : Baltimore Knife is run by my brothers! )
Chapeau bray?I think 90deg fore n aft when beat to quarters and athwartships in static operations
what are the british military red coats called (double or single breasted)
i wanna buy one and cant find what to search for
what i learnt in history class was that the shockwaves from the cannons would cause the crew manning the cannons to regularly shit themselves
"..from ebay", "..ebay", "..it's from ebay". How many packets for ebay purchases does Adam get in one day? :D
Don't worry, while he's not a trained actor, these videos are on the job acting training and Norm's still young and learning fast. I like his work here. For most people acting "naturally" on camera is a skill that takes some time to learn. I dare any TH-cam viewer to do better. Most of those those that can already have their own channels. Just watch the start of Tested's Bay Bridge video. The guy being interviewed looks like a deer in headlights. (He gets better once he starts talking).
Which episode did he wear this in? I mean Mythbusters.
Read the Books! I've read them more times than I can count. And I know what Meyer Sound is (deadhead).
Where is your stock, sir?
Where can I find a bicorne from that movie?
Hayden Darr it's not called a bicorne, it's actually called a cockade.
Adam: read the books!
i wonder if its a replica or a used prop?
looking at that jacket made me wonder how you would actually close it. are you sure about the shape? it seems very roundish to me...
I do the exact same thing with costumes and swords etc, but I don't try and make it like replica of a movie costume, I go more for historical stuff crossed with my own ideas about what looks best... It's an expensive hobby!
Russell Crowe wears the hat Napoleon style in the movie. The peaks are to the sides and not the front.
Just so you all know this is what I searched "making the Galapagos islands pudding cake from master and commander" and found this instead
he could build himself some really creepy lifelike Adam mannequins to display all his costumes
Just think as him as Asian Cp-30 :D
Adam is wearing a full dress frock - hint look at all the gold braid - not an undress uniform "every day" frock. He should read the books.
dress uniform. check around surplus stores
C-3PO*
The question is, why is this f--ing movie named "Master and Commander" (a rank that is in short called commander) when the protagonist is a full Post Captain.
petrairene master and commander and the far side of the world are the titles of the first and tenth books in the series and the movie is a mix of plots/scenes from both books. In Master and commander Jack Aubrey takes on a much larger ship, in Far side of the World he chases a ship into the Pacific.
or "inside the cave of the Savage man" if you like=)
The coat is all wrong. It is supposed to be able to button up. It is also not Capt Aubrey's every day coat. Just Google images.
I thought we establshed already that it's just the cave, not man cave. :)
Why is the cirrus X-3 just lying there, Finheads Riot!!
Norm acts way too professional, and seems to stick too much to the format of an interview, he should really just relax, because Adam is just all fun and games, and it really lightens up the show and makes it much more enjoyable, so a little less stiff neck Norm, I feel sorry that every buddy is bashing out on him, and I really think he just want to do a good job :)
So where is the bi-corn hat?
Now if only "Redbeard" Savage wouldn't get so seasick!!
Its a 'Norm' for him.hahaha
