I wish reviewers of small laptops would let us know the size and weight of the charger. It's very important to people who want a small computer for travel.
You can get a more lightweight USB-C charger for the X1. As long as its over 60 watt i believe. your comment is very valid. For example the charger for the X1 6gen was more heavy than the machine itself (so to speak).
Another reason why I prefer Thinkpad over Surface Pro is the fact that it comes with full-size HDMI connector, rather than the mini-display port. I have been to many boardrooms for presentation and I don't have to worry about forgetting to take a dongle with me to connect to presentation screen.
Are the keyboards used in all ThinkPad models the same? I have the ThinkPad L13 yoga, does it have the same keyboard as say the ThinkPad x1 yoga, or the x1 carbon?
@@ryfidelity7854 I'm looking at a pic of the Lenovo X13 yoga keyboard on the link below. It's definitely the same keyboard as the other Lenovo. That is my favorite keyboard ever. www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-L13-Yoga-20R6S00800.485828.0.html
@@caraveli2573 I really love it. I have been looking for the right laptop for a long time. They are either too slow (fanless Surface Pro 6 with i5) or too loud (Surface Pro with i7 with Boeing-like fan) or too heavy or too flashy/ugly (I don't understand how people can like the latest HP Spectre 13") or too plastic-cheap or they have unbearable MacBook-like keyboards. At the end, I found that 14" was the right dimension for me (not necessarily for everybody) because a 12" to 13" screen is too small for my tired eyes and 15" laptops are too heavy for my tired vertebras. So, in the 14" ultrabook category with high res screen and good keyboard, what choice do to REALLY have? X1 Carbon or X1 Yoga. That's it. I wanted both UHD and Touch screen so I had only one choice: X1 Yoga. Everything else is a bonus. Lots of ports. Fast NVMe drive, nice understated look and robust construction. OK, there is ONE thing I am not too happy with. It gets hot. We had a hot summer and I was wearing shorts quite often when working at home. I can tell you that this machine gets pretty hot and having it on my lap was not comfortable at all. With pants on, no issue so i'll have a comfortable winter :-)
I considered XPS 2 in 1 but the new model wasn't ready when I needed it. Also, Dell is following Apple in Dongle-land and I don't like it. In addition, it's a 13" screen and I find them too small for my taste. I almost went for the C930 but I decided against it because having an HDMI port is very useful for me as I do a lot of presentations and not having to carry another dongle to connect to a beamer is just very convenient. In addition, the feeling of robustness and high quality is not the same (this may be more perception than reality but perception matters).
@@philippelambinet1425 thank you very much for your feedback! I couldn't have said it better. Your reasons for buying the X1Y are exactly the same as mine. Hey Matthew, great review as usual. I like the music you used for this video. It's strange that i noticed and commented on it but i did enjoy the music for some reason. Not intrusive whatsoever.
Funny looking back from 2024 how these pre covid era laptops paid little attention to webcams. It now makes laptops made prior to 2019 pretty defunct given they're now an important necessity.
My Dell 9350 is barely 5 years old (1 month out of 4 yr warranty) and now goes to sleep spontaneously. I've done IT support for 30 years and I've tried everything to fix it. Think I'll go back to Lenovo. They never gave me any trouble even after 8 years. They're like the Lexus of laptops.
Go for x1 if you like something durable. I bought a gen 6 few months ago, it's just awesome. Compare to others in the same class like macbook or dell xps, x1 is better in many ways. Basically I can use it anywhere and anyway I want regardless dust, moist, heat,... the keyboard is outstanding, battery can survive 1 and a half workday but of course if you only do some basic office work. The one should be mentioned is speakers, they're just horrible.
Late comment -- and suggestion for new comparisons. I currently use a Surface Book 2 (16GB RAM/1TB SSD; I had a Surface Pro 4 prior to this). I like the screen ratio and the battery life is ok. The screen mechanism is somewhat clumsy, and I'm not impressed with the wi-fi card/performance. Here are my "wishes" for my next laptop: * Screen shape: 3:2 is better than 16:10 is better than 16:9, preferably at least 13 inch. * I'd prefer a touch display with inking. Probably not 4k screen -- Windows doesn't work very well with high resolution (menus, etc. on some non-standard programs that I use). * Good video camera for video meetings. The Surface line has good cameras. MUST have Windows Hello video support. * I'd prefer 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD * Must have better wi-fi card. I'd also like to have LTE, or even better LTE + 5G. * Decent keyboard. The keyboard of the Surface Pro is adequate. The one of the Surface Book is better. ThinkPad keyboards are even better. HP keyboards can be good. I've been less impressed with Dell keyboards, but I may be wrong (XPS 13 from 2016). * Must have: good *real life* battery life. The Surface Pro 4 "promised" 8-9 hours; in reality I saw 1.5-5 hours. The Surface Book 2 "promised" 17 hours; I've seen 7-10 hours. * Not too heavy. So what should my next laptop be? * HPs new Dragonfly? Checks most boxes, but is 16:9 screen ? * New Surface Pro 7+? Smallish screen, max 16 GB RAM (SSD can perhaps be upgraded from 256GB). * ThinkPad X1 yoga? How good is the video camera? * Dell Latitude 9420? How good is the video camera? How good is the keyboard? For all: how good is the battery life?
A tablet form factor of 16:9 makes little sense in portrait mode. But then again, it also makes little sense in landscape mode. If you want to use your laptop for productivity, that is.
"Whereas the Yoga just has 2 speakers on the bottom" In your own video I can see a large speaker grill on top, in-between the hinges, other reviews also mention it.
That's right! Plenty of reviews mention that the Yoga has the four speakers: two on top and two at the buttom. This totally makes sense because as you flip the X1 Yoga the sounds gets muffled. Got a Gen 1 X1 Yoga and would see the for speakers as good improvement.
Just ordered an X1 Carbon 7th gen sight unseen. Retiring my 8 year old ThinkPad X201. Or at least putting her in mothballs. I hope the X1 is a worthy upgrade. I went for the X1 carbon over the Yoga as I wanted to try a super light ultrabook this time around.

Hi Mathew, I've been following your channel for a while, and you're doing an awesome job. I actually bought an Alienware 13 R3 after seeing you reviewing it. However, I am a heavy linux user and I very rarely use windows. I wonder if you can help and include something on Linux compatibility when you review a laptop. Again, thank you very much I truly appreciate what you're doing.
waswaniable no, the 8th gen has the keys actually lowered a bit into the computer. The keys are much more satisfying to me compared to the retractable keys in the carbon.
The pen isn't that easy to lose when you buy it with your own money. I've been using my iPad for about a year and never have I even dropped the pencil.
As a Lenovo yoga 730 owner, I'm never buying a Lenovo laptop again. This thing is plagued with problems that others have experienced (look at reviews) and Lenovo refuses to acknowledge and repair these defects
SOG989 They are indeed speakers. Says so right on Lenovo’s webpage. Not sure why he insisted they were air vents. Does not give me a good feeling about the rest of his review.
Hi, I wanted to buy 2 in 1 and ordered the 2019 X1Y. The XPS 13 with same specs was $400 more, and the c930 came out the same price. Do you think I made the right decision choosing the X1Y over the other two? Thanks
I use the X1 Carbon as my daily workhorse working as a Web developer. It is a really nice piece of tech both look and performance wise. The only regrettable thing is that the RAM is soldered, so no upgrading to 32GB for me 😢.
My problem with this great keyboard: the Page Up & Page Down buttons soooo close to the arrows (left, right, up and down). I have a lot of mis hits. So annoying! Anyone else with this problem? I returned my X1 Carbon and bought a 2015 MacBook Pro. Really happy now!
Hey I've a quick question. which one should I choose? MSI GS65 RTX2060 32GB Memory 512GB Storage 240HZ Refresh Rate Display (or) Acer Predator Triton 500 RTX2060 16GB Memory 512GB Storage 144HZ Refresh Rate Display. I'm not a big gamer, I might not game at all. I'm looking to buy any one of these laptops for Video Editing on Davinci Resolve. Can you please help me.
is this laptop (i7/16Gb) suitable for AutoCAD and Matlab programming? I understand that it has an integrated graphics card. What'd a 2 in 1 that can run AutoCAD or a budget 2 in 1 gaming laptop? thanks.
Should I buy x1 carbon 2019 or Razer blade 15, or even sell XPS 13? Which one is better. My main focused is performance in editing and videos, and then gaming.
If maybe going to use for IT COURSE like cyber security software engineering in the future. And maybe have a game match sometime. Do u have any recommendations???
LOL, they were sooooooo close to getting my money with the x1 Yoga 2019. This could have been a reall MacBook Killer, with the frosted glass touchpad, that awesome (non-butterfly hinge🙄) keyboard, metal case, a *touch screen w/ stylus*, and the lack of the dongle-life. If only they had made the RAM upgradeable, like the L380. Or even if they offered a 32GB or 64GB version for that longevity, at a reasonable price. Freaking Apple charging $800 bucks for 48 additional GBs of RAM in their 16" MBP?!?!? You could probably get an entire L380 on discount for that price, an entire laptop! Also, I prefer the clamshell to the 360 hinge. Very little wiggling when typing w/ clamshell; annoys the heck out of me, especially on a glossy screen. alas.....
I have a first gen Thinkpad Yoga 14. I take it everywhere, in a backpack, in panniers on a bicycle, and I've dropped it three times, hard, twice with the screen open. I've found the hinges to be pretty tough.
I have the option to buy x1 carbon 8th gen fhd low power 400 nite or the x1 yoga 5th gen wqhd display 300nits All the other specs are exactly the same - what’s the difference between these two screens and he effects on productivity performance ?
I was looking at these notebooks when I found the fujitsu U939X. 2 lbs and can bes used as a tablet as the yoga. Only 13,3 screen though. If you get one please review as well. From these I would go for the x1 as that weight would count (I looking for a business notebook for my wife, being a tablet is only a sight plus not worth the weight).
i just bought the X1 Carbon and it was a utter disappointment i have to say it lasted 20 days. I was using is regularly as a student and one day while watching Netflix all I did was tilt the screen using the bottom right corner and the screen cracked. And when the model first arrived I also had a problem with the right palm rest making weird clicky sounds every time I rest my hands on it.

Razer Blade and XPS 15 have dedicated graphics cards, so choose either one of them
If maybe going to use for IT COURSE like cyber security software engineering in the future.
Very little wiggling when typing w/ clamshell; annoys the heck out of me, especially on a glossy screen.
alas.....
Keyboard is same in both laptops right?
Dont forget that the X1 comes with a touch screen option also
Yes the yoga does hence you can draw on it. They both have their advantages
Hey Mathew, Can you please review the MSI GS65 9SG 2019
any details about the battery life please? thats gonna make or break it.
the 4k model is about 5 hours and the 1080p 10 hours.
@@ksadeath i meant x1 carbon vs yoga ( both 1080p models)
both the keyboards are the same?
You left out the part where the Yoga's hinges are gonna break in a couple of years.
And the screen is going to start to flicker and they will cancel offering any extended warranties.
I have a first gen Thinkpad Yoga 14. I take it everywhere, in a backpack, in panniers on a bicycle, and I've dropped it three times, hard, twice with the screen open. I've found the hinges to be pretty tough.
As per the review, both are good contenders...
Can the yoga handle photoshop and Lightroom reasonably well on its own? And then if docked with an eGpu?
Can someone confirm this for me please ?
Are the keyboards identical? Looks like there is a difference! :-)
" I want this to be the best nipple you've ever touched"
I'm so done...Comedy gold love it 😆😂🤣💀⚰
u failed to mention whether the x1 carbon 7gen is touch screen or not
You failed to check the spec sheet
Matthew Moniz loFl. again, u failed, and u failed in life...hence u r youtubing
I have the option to buy x1 carbon 8th gen fhd low power 400 nite or the x1 yoga 5th gen wqhd display 300nits
All the other specs are exactly the same - what’s the difference between these two screens and he effects on productivity performance ?
is the keyboard on the carbon backlit? might be a dumb question but idk
intel i5-8265u x1 yoga vs ryzen 5 4650u x13? Which to buy for photo editing?
Do they have the same keyboard? thank you.
What are you the last guy in the card game? These have been out for ages.
where are the x1 extreme reviews!!
Don't have one yet!!!!!!!
My yoga doesn't turn on, i guess it's a broken power button, does somebody know how to fix it?
I was looking at these notebooks when I found the fujitsu U939X. 2 lbs and can bes used as a tablet as the yoga. Only 13,3 screen though. If you get one please review as well. From these I would go for the x1 as that weight would count (I looking for a business notebook for my wife, being a tablet is only a sight plus not worth the weight).
the yoga also has front facing speakers.....
02:43 are you really benchmarking the code compiling power of the X1 Carbon with a Macbook Air? That's like comparing an F1 with an sports audi
Any thoughts between these and the Gygabite Aero 15?
i just bought the X1 Carbon and it was a utter disappointment i have to say it lasted 20 days. I was using is regularly as a student and one day while watching Netflix all I did was tilt the screen using the bottom right corner and the screen cracked. And when the model first arrived I also had a problem with the right palm rest making weird clicky sounds every time I rest my hands on it.
do one with the extreme
As soon as I get one in the studio, I certainly will!
@@MatthewMoniz waiting for it
@@MatthewMoniz waiting for it too. Also thank you for not being like most other tech youtubers who mainly focus on the latest and greatest smartphones that barely anyone will buy.
@@MatthewMoniz Please do! I need to know if it's at the top tier of your list for content creators! Will its dedicated GPU be enough?
I'd like to see linux tested on these, considering I dont ever touch windows.
Lenovo is certifying all their thinkpads for linux support soon. I can pretty much guarantee that both of these work just fine, however I've had trouble with my C740 yoga having an unsupported fingerprint reader made by a company called Shenzen?
@@Jemboj2895 Cool thanks
I don't trust fingerprint readers because its just an incentive to cut mine off.
@@TransitTycoon Pretty damn sure the fingerprint readers on the x1 are seperate from the main board and encrypted some how. Should be pretty safe.
