I just wanted to point out only one player has done it against Australia - the great Len Hutton. Lara came close with a brilliant 277 at the SCG before he was tragically run out. Against a pretty decent Australian attack as well (Hughes, McDermott, Greg Matthews and a bloke by the name of Shane Warne). It was a stunning innings - you bowled short outside off he cut you for 4, short at the body he hooked or pulled you for 4 and an array of strokes all round the ground. Best batting I ever saw. Ross Taylor also made a 290 in Perth but I don't recall that one like Lara's.
