The dinosaur mosaic shows the Greek word "krokadilopardelas," which literally means "spotted crocodile." Probably a reference to the Nile monitor, which is a largeish lizard with spots.

Amber has had mystical beliefs around it for millennia. A seeming “stone”, though actually fossilized tree sap, it can be carved by hand and polished easily (I was a stone cutter for 30 years). It also has a unique and beautiful scent, which is released by heating or burning the amber. It was believed to offer protection or health benefits when carved into specific forms, or when the scent was inhaled.

A couple of points I'd like to make, one is a fact and one is really more of a theory. The first point is that, it is possible that the Earth being a sphere may not have been common knowledge in Europe if education was sub-par, but the Earth has been known by humanity to be spherical since the BCs. An ancient mathmatician named Eratosthenes used geometry to calculate the size and shape of the Earth with a surprisingly high level of accuracy before the year 0. My second thought, my theory, is that the ancient viking coin found in Maine likely was left there by vikings. Because, why would a later European bring a viking coin to the Americas? While there were no viking artifacts found near the coin, were there any later European artifacts found around it either? Since we know that vikings were exploring areas within a few hundred miles of the location where the coin was found, it is fairly likely that vikings had explored that area, and possibly didn't stay for long. Perhaps they dropped the coin as they were passing through? Maybe there is a site not far from there where there are viking artifacts still waiting to be discovered

Vikings raided Muslim-held Spain and the Mediterranean coast cities. During the bronze age, tin was mined in the British Isles and sold in the Middle East. There was a long time of contact between the Norse culture and the Arab culture. Vikings held Muslim slaves as well as others from different cultures. So, finding Arab trinkets is not a surprise.

As someone who went to school in Sweden, we were taught early on about the Viking Age and pretty much everything in this video pertaining to the vikings is more or less “old news” 🤔 This is coming from someone who is 32 and it’s around 20 years ago it was taught to me.
Vikings visited (and lived) in North America before Columbus “discovered” the land? Nothing new. Vikings in the Mediterranean areas and the Middle East? Old news. Etc.
But I do realise that learning about the Viking Age in school isn’t exactly common for people outside of the Nordics! Still very much fun to have these old memories rushing back whilst watching this video!

Judging from the recreation, it looks like they placed the earth in the center and depicted it as sphere. The latter bit is no surprise, as ancient Greek philosophers no only knew of the planet's spherical nature, but also calculated its size with a fairly accurate result.

It's not actually a calculator, more akin to a series of calendars that uses a hand wound gearing system to move the pointers around. ( Akin to many watches, without the automated system. )
In other words, it is based off of past observation, not actually calculating real motion or anything. There are no assumptions about the actual makeup of the solar system.
In fact, it even required the user to set it up, make certain calculations themselves, and manually move pointers and such to operate it. Then it had an amount of error since the real world doesn't actually match the nice perfect ratios of gearing. In some places the error is incredibly tiny, but others it was much less so.
A marvel for its time, but often over-exaggerated.

He didn't invent the parachute or helicopter. He sketched a prototype of both and they both needed extensive modifications to actually work.
He was still a god damn genius of a man though.

I'm pretty sure if you resurrected him and asked him to make a CGI Mona Lisa, he wouldn't do that great. Even if he could learn fast, it's just entirely fundamentally different from painting the Mona Lisa, and it would show on his early attempts. He might be able to figure it out eventually, but it would take time.
That was the point: The engraving appears to be outside of his skills specifically at engraving. Not surprising since he was primarily a painter and drawer.

@@zemerick Interesting theory but I still disagree with the assumption that anything compromising the use of simple motor skills was not easily within DaVinci's skill set.

    • @zemerick
      @zemerick 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jeffdriscoll6096 That's not what is being said though. It's not a binary yes or no as to could he engrave, it's about the skill level.
In other words, Da Vinci could have been quite good, but the engravings on the egg were just done by someone even better. Considering what it is, it would stand to reason that they would have used a world class engraver.
Also, keep in mind that AFAIK there are absolutely no known engravings done by Leonardo. It seems quite likely he would have dabbled in it to some degree, but it must have been quite rare and not up to his normal standards for this to be the case. Especially with the relative durability of most engravings versus say paintings. That would mean he had little practice to fine-tune the details, and learn the tricks of the trade, which would separate him from a master of the art.
They're also not saying that he definitely didn't do it, just that it probably wasn't him. It's often exceedingly difficult to prove a negative, but that does not mean that the inverse is proven. There are thousands, if not tens of thousands, of potential artists of the era and location that equally could have done it, many of which would be much more likely as it would have fallen more into their area of expertise.

    Islamic God Allah?
Allah means God in Arabic. It is the same God that created all of us and everything that exists.
Muslims don't have a different God.
Jesus spoke Aramaic, and God is called Ellah in Aramaic.
Moses spoke Hebrew, and he called God Elohim.
    'God' is English.
None of the prophets we hear of spoke English, so they all had different names for God.
Please don't spread misinformation; Muslims don't worship a different God.
And Muslims mean “those who submit to the Will of God.”
So anyone who worships God and believes in only one God, who has no partners, and does righteous deeds is a Muslim. Because you are doing what God commands.
The word Muslim is just an Arabic word. But the above is it’s meaning.
It's just an Arabic word (Muslim).
So let's not let languages make us assume otherwise.
    Thank you.

There have been Viking artifacts discovered on Nova Scotia, so a coin ending up in Maine is not unusual. The book called The Eaters of the Dead (made into the movie "The 13th Warrior) was based off of the memoirs of a Muslim man who lived and fought with the Vikings, so there was a relationship between the two cultures.

It's actually been known the earth was round for a couple thousand years. The ancient Greeks not only learned the earth was round but even calculated it's approximate size (even if Greek philosophers didn't like the idea). The idea people dismissed Columbus because they thought the earth was flat is a longstanding myth: the real reason was they knew roughly how big it was and knew reaching the east by sailing west would take longer than sailing around Africa.

This would roughly mean crocodile-leopard. It's a mythical creature like a griffin or pegasus. Another one, maybe better known is Camelopardalis (camel-leopard), which is a star constellation......
Either way, not a dinosaur. Greek had words for lizzards and reptiles and would surely use them if the animal looked like it....
