  • The lights on the little suzuki FZ 50 are way too dim. voltage is reading only 0.7 volts at the stator. removal of the coils should be straight forward but as with all old vehicles, time bonds stuff together. got there in the end. part 2 hopfully will see the problem rectified.

    Thank you for doing this! I bought a FZ50 as a midlife crisis project, my better half build motorbikes but this one is different from anything he done previously and I'm only in training (I build bicycles) so this makes it easier to understand it all. You're a star!

    I have two of these and learned quickly that they use the charged battery as a regulator, without the battery they can blow the headlight. expensive lesson learned.

    Hi Richard, on the subject of Points v CDI ignition, Initially Suzuki only offered CDI ignition to the American market as you rightly said and uk models had points and condenser, however from 1980 onwards uk FZ50’s also were sold with CDI ignition so yours will be a uk bike as I see yours is on a Y plate which is 1982/3.
    Good vid by the way, I had to replace the points and condenser on mine, the points were worn and the condenser had completely failed, new parts fitted now and she runs sweet.

      Thank you for the useful info, it was driving me mad as my Haynes manual doesn't show an electronic ignition system for the UK model, only the us model. There are many small differences between mine and what the wiring diagram shows and it makes fault diagnosis quite difficult.

      So I might be crazy but are there actually 3 versions of the u.s cdi/pei fz50? The service manuals have me going in circles trying to figure this out. Maybe one of you gentlemen might know wht to do.
      I've got the u.s market 1981 model and when I got it it didn't have the cdi/pei. When I went to buy one everthing I saw cost more than I paid for the bike. Finally I found a company selling aftermarket cdi/pei's for "fa50 and fz50". When it got here I see that it's only a 3 wire box and there are 4 wires coming out of the stator. The instructions on the cdi say one goes to ground, one to ignition coil and one to source coil. Which one is which? Can I make this 3 wire box work? Staring at these wiring diagrams is maddening.

      @@billyclifford6106 the wiring diagram is of no use. It has very little likeness to our bikes. My model has the CDI combined in the coil, I'm dreading the day that fails. I'm not certain about the CDI boxes, no experience there other than my Chinese GY6.

      @@richardjweeks I didn't even know the cdi/coil version existed! That's just like the piaggio hi-per2 engine on my typhoon. Wiring is like the most frustrating riddle that once you understand makes you wonder how you didn't solve it faster.
      I just put a malossi 70cc kit on it and MLM exhaust its killing me to ride it. This is the last thing I've gotta do and she should be running I really hope I figure it out soon.

      I think I have tracked the problem down to a dodgy regulator. Still not a cheap fix

      @@richardjweeks probably just a 6 volt zener diode. One wire and a chassis mount?

    • @richardjweeks
      @richardjweeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoddingaboutSi I don't know how they work but yes, single wire in straight from the lighting coil and the case is earthed to the chassis. It isn't shown on the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual and I only discovered it by accident. Plugged in, lights dim, unplugged and they work brilliantly ( flicker at idle) and I didn't push my luck over revving as voltage climbing up to 7v at higher rpm. OEM replacement is about £55 posted. I'm currently looking for an aftermarket alternative. Any suggestions ? Looking at your channel, you appear to knowledgeable about sparks...

      @@richardjweeks you would have to but two in series I think to regulate the ac from the magneto. Seem to remember doing it on my yamaha 125 years ago.

    Hi there. Would you by any chance have a wiring diagram as I've hunted the Web as much as I can to find the correct one.
    My bike does have points and condenser which all the ones I've found don't have them.
    Many thanks.

    I have a 79 that is my grandma's and can't get it started.. is only one fuel line suppose to have fuel going to carb? It' has spark..the battery is dead can you start it with dead battery? Think they said it just stopped running I already cleaned the carb

    • @richardjweeks
      @richardjweeks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is only one fuel line delivering fuel to the carburettor. The fuel cock is vacuum operated, so one pipe to that is supplying vacuum from the inlet manifold. Personally I would try a temporary fuel supply bypassing this as it could be blocked to ensure fuel reaching the carburettor. Other problems could be air leaks around the crank seal or stuck/ broken reed valve.
