This is the second round of our two part Combat Story with former Force Recon, Scout Sniper, and Marine Rifleman AJ Pasciuti who recently retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 (Gunner) and passed on more lucrative careers in the defense industry to keep a promise he and his fellow Marines made after losing some of their closest friends in combat to lead a purpose- and service-driven life as he runs for public office in his hometown of San Jose, California. AJ was an unlikely candidate to be the Marine Corps sniper who, as part of a team, was responsible for killing the most lethal sniper in Iraq (known as Juba) who took the lives of, potentially, 140+ Americans using a US sniper rifle taken off the bodies of a fallen Marine Corps sniper team. AJ is credited with ultimately pulling the trigger on Juba but, in true Marine Corps fashion and very much in line with AJ’s character, he has forever eschewed the spotlight and attributed the work to the team of Marines that stopped Juba (who was personified in the movie American Sniper) from terrorizing other US forces.
In a very sad and emotional but inspiring turn of events, AJ would lose a coin flip in which his closest friend’s team would take the decisive position on a particular operation in Afghanistan while AJ’s team served a supporting role. During the fight, AJ would lose this Marine and confidant during a multi-hour gunfight.
When you hear his story of loss and sacrifice, it’s no surprise that AJ chose to continue serving in his post-military career, running for office in northern California. He’s a great reminder of the type of people we all want in office, even when these office’s tend to undervalue the integrity and dedication to others that he embodies.

Sir i did 4 tours in iraq. From Feb 03 - Sep 09 i know what it was like in the streets and on convoys getting hit by IED's and sniper fire from Al Nazaria to Ramadi and every other place we went. Thank you! This interview means more to me than you know. Sgt USMC Retired Combat Wounded.

@@Last_Chance. ...WTF are you talking about? He retired as a a Chief Warrant Officer 3. Warrant Officers are absolutely officers. In my old battalion when I was in, 1st Battalion 8th Marines we had our Battalion Gunner who was CWO 4. That man was an amazing Marine and he was full of knowledge. You should know that the newest Warrant Officer 1 outranks the Sgt Major of the Marine Corps while being outranked by the newest 2nd Lt. Warrant Officers are former enlisted and have at least 8 years time in service and must at least be a Sgt ( that has been selected for pro.otion to SSgt to become a staff NCO or already be a Staff NCO. My Battalions Gunner had the ear of our Battalion commander at all times and he was a Lt Col.

Respect! Over the years, I met and interacted as a DOD contractor with some Navy Mustangs and I can say they were absolutely the best, most based and grounded.
When I was on the Sealion, the COB looking back now, was the finest Navy man I ever met.
My Grandfather told me when I was a teen..." The G.D. Chiefs run the Navy." My last days in the surface division recall It. Commander Gilmore, screaming at Chief Turney, subs recruiter that " (my last name) would never get off this ship!"
Two weeks later, I was at sub school at New London.
My Grandfather was always right!

This is by far the best interview and storytelling I’ve ever heard. Thank you AJ. I served with 2-7 CAV in the Battle of Taji where a sniper missed me by inches while my wife was in labor with my first son back in Texas. I say GOD gave me two lives that day. Then the Battle of Fallujah. Attached to the 1MEF and 11th MEU receiving the Guadalcanal patch from the USMC.

AJ Pasciuti really needs to consider writing a book about his experiences. Not just in the military and Juba the Sniper but just his life in general. Hopefully bringing in other people that touched his life and their experiences. This is good stuff. He is incredibly naturally descriptive with a good sense of humor which is golden. Wow I’m blown away. My grandpa was in 1st Marine Division and carried a BAR . Two Purple Hearts and fought 3 or 4 campaigns. He’s my hero and now you are right up there with him. Thanks to all vets and active duty military you are our best.
When he said “I thought about quitting today” just broke my heart! He is obviously still hurting so much and feel The weight of the world and guilt on his shoulders. I just hope he gets the help he needs so he never thinks about “quitting” again!

Sniper story is the best I’ve ever heard and he told it so well. I was captivated.
Semper Fi. You are one awesome Marine! I was in 2nd amtrack Bn out of Courthouse bay, Lejeune. 1968 -72. I was always taught crying shows weakness. I’ve since learned that’s BS. People need to let go of their pain, holding it in is not healthy. As you have proved a person can be brave without being insensitive. You exemplify the best of the Marine Corps! I also believe ultimately, love can beat hate.
I was in BRC with Jamie Lowe. My roommate was Jamie's friend from BRC and I'll never forget the day they came and told my buddy Henry that his friend was gone. I also remember meeting AJ around 2008/2009. I have had the pleasure and good fortune in my life to know and stand in the presence of some the greatest people that have ever graced this planet. I was all over that area in 2008 with Arkansas Guard 2-153 INF. That was one of the coolest stories I've ever heard.
Tommy parker (the sniper team leader who’s rifle was stolen) is from my hometown in Arkansas he was a good family friend of ours.

Holy Cow!!!! By far the best episode so far!! AJ is incredible. Im a paramedic sitting at work in the middle of the night watching this episode and thinking about all my "ghosts" . Although, my missions do not compare to AJ's missions, it is comforting to know that there are men out there that will stand in the gap!! When I got out, I eventually started working in EMS. I want you to know that the ghosts are the same - doesn't matter where they come from.
You take fucking care of yourself. Your community needs you on your bus. Your partner needs you to be heads up and on the bounce. The young EMTs you work with look up to you.
You owe them a physically and mentally healthy medic. Hell - I need your ass, too, because I'm rapidly turning into an old man.

I fell asleep last night with my headset on and my phone playing TH-cam videos about the war in Israel. I awoke at 0515 with AJ's story filling my ears and my consciousness. I wept with him as he described Matt's death, and again as he related the story of his precious letter. His is a tremendously moving saga of a young Marine's experiences in the crucible of combat. For me it is especially so to hear his story just a few days after the Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day.
I'm a Vietnam Marine veteran. AJ's point about the mission primacy of supporting the infantry resonated with me. I was an A-6 Intruder pilot at the tail end of the war, after the 1972 Easter Week invasion of the South by the NVA. We were supporting the South Vietnamese Marines and ARVN Rangers in their slogging bloody fight to drive the NVA back out of their country. We were given a very conservative SOP designed to protect our aircraft and crews which restricted us to high bomb release altitudes, and limiting of permissable runs. But whenever the FAC told us that our target was NVA in contact with our troops, as a flight lead, I immediately threw out the restrictions and hung our asses out as much as possible to protect our allies on the ground, especially because I knew those friendlies had American Marine and US Army advisors with them. We did whatever we needed to do to supportthem, regardless of the antiaircraft threat facing us. I'm proud of that, and ashamed that the US Congress failed to keep our promise to the South Vietnamese.

Phenomenal interview, Ryan. I was a shitbird 0352 reservist but my dad was a recon marine in Vietnam and even though it was 40 years later, a lot of the tactics, mindset, and emotions AJ shared, remind me of my dad’s stories.

This resonated with so many of my experiences in the Marines and in Iraq. I served 24 years and remember every detail of every person who died in my place. It cuts deep. No one will ever understand. I vow to live a life of service for the legacy of service of those better than me.

Juba was a group of snipers from the IAI. This was just one of the main ones. There was a sniper cell who was also part of this group nicknamed Sadaqiyah Sniper that ran the sniping school in the area.
Major Justin Constantine who was a famous motivational speaker was nearly killed by a sniper in this same area just a few months after this story. There is a Quora answer that gives a better detailed analysis.

These 2 podcasts (pt 1 & 2) with AJ is, without a doubt, one of the best podcasts ever, IMHO. AJ is a gifted storyteller, humble man and a fellow Force Recon Marine. He embodies all things that is good with this world (except for some of his hippy attitudes and desire to be a goddamn politician, 😀). AJ is a great ambassador for Marines and Recon. One note of dissent: East Coast is always better. ;-)
I was in that convoy coming down the road. I remember sergeant H holding up that rifle I thought he took them out for the longest. I remember the lieutenants in the cp on OGrish analyzing footage. I started with Diesel finished with Samurai 3/5 Get some!
I was a plt sgt of Marines in combat and I shed a tear listening to this. It never goes away. That’s why I avoid all memories of it.
AJ Pasciuti, I know the situation you are talking about in Ramadi. I was in the Army coming down to Biap from TQ and we wound up staying in Ramadi overnight and were almost tasked to support the Marines that had a high casualty loss their first week in the city. We were told to move south instead. I never heard the story of you taking out Juba until today. I always thought it was Chris Kyle. I know we have our debacle’s between branches, but I am proud to say we are one team. My hats off to you Gunny. I am also a retired E-7. Chris Kyle was not who he pretended to be it would seem.. After reading his book, I thought he was a warrior God. I’ve read more books and seen a few interviews with soldiers and the repeating theme wasn’t good, I’ll just say that.
His name “the legend” was given to him as a joke because of how he bragged about himself. Great soldier and did his job. I still respect what he had to do. He’s just not what he said he was in his book. Not many other guy in the teams liked him very much.

Absolutely amazing story thank you for your service. My buddy on his first day in Afghanistan got blown up on there way to fob. He said it blew up under his seat and only thing that saved him was among can under his seat. Thank God everyone lived. Your story reminded me of his story of hitting a ied. I've listen to some of the episodes and their great, but this one is the best, I without a doubt know this is one of the best stories that should be written and made into a movie from start to finish. My company in army did exact same enemy IED placer ambush mission in 2005 about end of our deployment. In south Iraq. Near Talil. We had Bradley's leave us late in night and we set up platoon in over watch positions on suspected road area . We watched with our snipers all night until sun came up. Bradley where far down road on standby. We set up on a freezing night ( not enough snibble gear) spread in a ditch.
God the amount of weight this man bears on his shoulders is tremendous. I truly truly hope that he doesn't quit. We need men like him in this world to try to end the wars where other good men die because of old greedy men being angry with each other. AJ if you see this - please please do not quit. There is a reason you're here. You may not have found it yet - but you will.

I pray to God enough people like this so it blows up so guys can see it. tommy parker was close with my family and i always heard story’s of him growing up he was also one of my main influences on wanting to join the Marine Corps. I am super happy to see someone telling his story if anyone knew tommy or knows any thing no one talks about that happened on the roof please let me know i share all the information i can with my mom who is in contact with his mother.

I think it's comforting to know that other men struggle to continue existing. Thanks for what you do, Ryan. I hope AJ reads this, but we do all have a purpose, even if you survived. By you sharing your story, you've memorized your friends for life, because as we all know, nothing can be taken off the internet. Also, there is no such thing as coincidence, so that girls letter was meant to be.

In my opinion, this is the baddest story ever. A marine sniper hunts and after hours on site both snipers looking at each other but the US guy is too good and gets the drop and takes 3 shots ending the man who was using a sniper taken off of a kia marine sniper. That is badass and as badass as it gets. Thank you for your service you are a beast
It was a sniper team of 4 and the story isn't the baddest ever. There was a lot of casualties before that day. We ran missions trying to trick them. Ran one with snipers in place using a fake ied. The problem was, that road had so many ieds that there was a real one there and killed a very loved service member. I am not going to use names or talk more about it because I know about the guilt some have had. If you look up "lED and Sniper Defeat" they use the area as Named Area of Interest. I cannot stress enough how bad MSR Michigan was on the Ramadi-Habbaniyah-Fallujah corridor. Put it this way. It had 3x more IEDs statistically than the #2 and #3 most IED road, 1 in Baghdad and 1 in Mosul and then #4 was MSR Mobile that ran parallel north across the Euphrates. The AO was insane to say the least. IEDs and Snipers everywhere with a very impressive mortar team to keep you shaking your head once you finally get back to base. My dude located 1 of the mortar teams while flying the raven though. It just never stopped there...
You never heard of Carlos a Vietnam sniper who shot the enemy's top sniper sent to kill him and he shot him though the scope while aiming at each other

I came across this video by chance. It is probably the most riveting interview I have ever watched or listened to. I could not find enough words to express my respect and admiration for those who served and specially for the heroes who gave their lifes and for their families.
Loved this interview!! My heart broke for him losing his friend. I cried and cried. I wish him the best in his future and thank him for his service!!! It is men like AJ that our country needs. What a stand up guy!!!
Outstanding interview! I was 6weeks from enlisting to the Marines when I suffered a traumatic eye injury that nearly took my vision in my left eye. I already had the conversations in what it took be become a Marine Scout Sniper. My injury prevented my enlistment. While AJ suffers from regret over that coin toss, I suffer from the belief I should’ve been someplace to have protected my team and saved someone. Listening to AJ and where his mind is, made me empathize bc I think about my failure to enlist every day of my life and I suffer from depression because of it. AJ; God bless you brother, thank you for your service as an active Marine, a Marine carrying that flag into society, and I pray you find peace, although, I never have, I always believe it can happen some day. Keep the faith and always move forward. God Bless the Marine Corps and all that served her!

That was a great interview. My brother was in the Marines around this time.Hearing this story gave me a whole different perspective and appreciation for the sacrifices these people make. Thank you to all the service men and women.

Thank you CWO3 Pasciuti for clearing up the circumstances and so many invalid comments about the deaths of the 4-man sniper team. They were asleep...they were listening to iPods...ad nauseum. So much of this seemed to be driven by jealousy, ignorance or someone trying to CYA. As you said, they were ordered to violate SOP, were placed in a very vulnerable position and they were surprised. But, as you also said, they fought back until they were finally overwhelmed. God rest their souls and memories - you were the one who ultimately closed this unfortunate chapter. BRAVO ZULU, sir.
