Several times it has happened that people who come into my house after a while comment that not a lot has changed. They like everything but notice that I still have the same couch, the same television set and the same cups. Apparently it's something odd to take good care of your stuff and if it's good quality it can last a very long time. It's a habit I learnt from my parents and grandparents who didn't have the money to quickly replace things. What strikes me with these comments and when I visit friends and family, is that I sometimes see a tendency of constant renewal: buying new things, decluttering them after a few years and buying new stuff again. I wonder what makes people so restless to consume this much.

Your videos are the best. As the daughter of an antique dealer, former collector and creative type who occasionally makes art, which means I have an overabundance of nifty stuff, I am so attracted to Minimalism. I believe there is a happy balance and I'm working towards it. One of the best things about your videos is there is no judgment. You don't take an abelist perspective like some decluttering channels do. No, we can't all whip through a sink of dirty dishes in ten or 15 minutes or vacuum the whole house in that time. Because you never touch on an abeled pov it is refreshing and encouraging. You just make suggestions and give encouragement to explore doing things a bit differently. Thank you for that.

What hangs on my walls are mostly sentimental because they came from Mom and Dad (1), older sister (1), younger sister (1 crewelwork, and 1 simple three shelf unit on which I chose to display my own special souvenirs, one per shelf), and last, but not least, one of my two brothers-in-law (1 black and white photograph / poster - content is a fifties kitchen with a boy and his dog staring at a plump pie that's on top of a cupboard over the refrigerator). This last one hangs close by our kitchen table.

@@bananaanna1373 I’m somewhat aware of Joshua’s past, at least from his videos. And since silence implies consent I’d like to briefly clarify. I’m not a believer, no disrespect to anyone, but it’s not my scene. Let’s just say I’m the friendly neighbor atheist. I don’t try to talk people our of their faith or argue about the topic with others. This is just what works for me. His university education is secular and he appeals to his viewers mainly based on secular knowledge and enlightenment values.
Thanks for your comment. I mean this as the highest compliment to Joshua, his views are well grounded in the rational real world of scholars, economists, and psychologists, among others. @@thatswhatisaid8908 With Joshua's permission, of course: In history, Jesus - and a multitute of other sages and religions - fasted. From what I researched, Jesus would have followed a Jewish "Yom Kippur" 25-hour fast. Most likely a sunrise to sunset fast in the Gospel is mentioned later when He chats with Satan.
I do not do this one; however, I might try it in Lent. Worth a shot.
But, determining the time of your eating, setting menus, cooking your own food, and then removing "drinks" will save lots of money. I used to buy cookies, Red Cola (here in Mexico), and lots of snacks, etc. Eating once per day, or even twice within 4 - 6 hours means that I'm not eating "all day long". I also removed all refined carbs (not necessarily keto). I normally eat once per day because I'm not hungry for "cena" or "breakfast" the next morning. This has saved copious amounts of money. The health benefits are beyond mentioning ... too many. When you get used to it; it takes getitng used to, trust me; you eventually don't get hungry all the time, and then you eat when you are. I eat lots of greens, meats, and fats. I will do a blood workup when I hit my 21 st kilogram lost. I'm 55, and my mind has never been clearer, and my sleep so peaceful.
I now have a pantry full of garbage that I really don't feel comfortable "giving away" either because it's just downright inflammatory (literally inflames the body). I'll figure something out.
So, it's just one more way to minimalise, and it appears to be in tune with several world faith paradigms, including mine. I hope this helps you. :D

But otherwise aaayyy every meal we are meant to fill our stomachs only with 1/3 of food 1/3 of water and leave 1/3rd empty. That's just too difficult for me growing up filling my stomach 3 times a day.
Right now with a child im learning to just eat whag i need when i am hungry maybe only 2 times a day morning and evening i don't eat much in her lunch meal maybe some fruit. Clothing, food and shelter are necessities. What we do is take those to excess, simply because stores carry it all, and advertising is everywhere including the tag on your undies and the t-shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket with a name brand / logo emblazoned on it (which is free advertising for the company when it is worn; and you paid them to do so).
Teach your children (and yourself) to be smart and wise shoppers for all three of the necessities for life.

Love your channel I was tidy before I became a minimalst. Now I'm both and my life is nice. The only thing I'm not minmalst about are my dvds, board games, and my Nintendo collection. Other than that im minimal in all aspects of my life. We downsized to a 800 square foot old new england apt from a 1400 square foot 3 bed home. I've had to become even more minimal. I love the look of minimalsm, but more than that I enjoy the benefits of keeping my life simple so I can enjoy the things I collect.

Great distinction and great video. I've thought about taking the time to write down what my "fantasy minimalist self" would have as a fulfilling lifestyle and routine (daily, weekly, seasonally) and then write down the things I would need to accomplish that. I would bet it is far less than I already own.

Your videos are GREAT! You inspired me to start this decluttering/minimulism journey! Ok, I confess. I have been decluttering & getting rid of things since I started watching your videos. (I think 2 years). I get to one level & then re-assess & look at what's left & think, "I don't need this!" I learned that I am renewing my needs list & moving forward to LESS.

Decluttering tests one's mental strength as it makes you decide/choose what you really need over what you seem to want. The best thing about decluttering is, the more (items) you lose, the more you win (space/clarity) !

Recently I had a conversation where I declared, “I can’t be a minimalist. I keep accepting everybody’s hand-me-downs.” All my kids’ clothes, books, toys, games, etc were not carefully chosen by them or by me. They were someone else’s cast-offs or gifts from friends and family. It is quite a chore to keep on decluttering to counterbalance all the things that enter our house.

I Did this for years! It took quite awhile to rid myself of excess and to learn to say thank you but no, unless I know someone who needs the item. Please consider dropping these unneeded things at a shelter, mission, food pantry. Get the stuff into the hands of those in need, not able to shop even at the thrift shop. Today I left 4 things at the bus stop. They were gone in 20 minutes!

I’ve just discovered the difference between decluttering & minimalism.
Decluttering is purging unused items. I have noticed watching decluttering videos that
they still have way too much stuff. Minimalism purges a high percentage of items and
keeps a manageable amount of items.

Josh. I love your videos, so helpful and inspiring ! Will u PLeASE consider a whole house tour. I’m talking cabinets in Kitchen and bathrooms , kids closets your closet, linen closet, garage maybe even an attic or basement. Why?, Because I have a tendency to remove all of the visual clutter but I still tuck things away in cabinets and closets. And drawers and under bed. When your wife opens the cabinet and I see what they look likeWith a few cups and a few plates in it and I see how neatly your closet looks, it is so so inspiring. Please help me get over this hurdle, I have been watching you for over a year and you and your family have inspired me so much. Thank you

I continue to purge the items I no longer use or need and donate to others who are in need. I see no reason to buy new furniture, clothes stuff in general when what I have serves the purpose. I love to reuse, find a new use, and help to consume as little of our limited resources of this beautiful planet

I grew up quite poor for a long time. Learned how to play guitar early on. When I got a good job, I wound up buying WAY too many musical instruments, most of which I still have. Now that I'm doing the minimalist thing, I'm going thru all this and starting to ask the question "why do I have this?". Don't get me wrong, it is not easy.

We're "fully open" here, California, so you have my sympathies. Still, you likely know instinctively if some of your stuff is no longer needed by you. Don't let potential scarcity frighten you into keeping things you might be better off without.

    • @renel7303
      @renel7303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kobrien7945 can you list furniture or other things on something like Nextdoor, Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist? Don't know if those are available to you or currently allowed where you are. As I told Monika we're open here in California. I do anticipate shutting down again by maybe October. With that in mind I need a new pair of runners and to take some things to the local charity shop while they are still accepting donations. Good luck getting rid of some of your daughter's excess stuff.

Just what we all need another set of rules. Do whatever makes you happy. You are still going to have to spend time being intentional about what’s in your home and on your body. Does it fit my minimalist aesthetics? Etc. That takes up a lot more thought process. So it’s not as freeing as it sounds. How about it removed color and creativity. It creates environment that could be considered depressing to some. Institutional. There is a balance to be struck between decluttering and minimalism. God made our world colorful and dynamic. I want to see minimalist who don’t think that means drab. What difference if you have a red as opposed to a gray comforter. Does the gray one cost less. Did the red one take longer to pick out. The Asian culture value minimalism but it rich in color and contrast. This new age minimalism is bunk. Organic cotton comes in vivid blues , greens, etc. If you want to live a life of service do that. Thank Heaven God is not a minimalist. This is from a person whose loves and lives with neutral aesthetics.

OK, but do you spend that time you saved thinking about possessions? There's intentionality and there's obsession - where's the line? i don't want to spend all my time thinking about everything i touch, Do I really need this? Not being flip, really asking.
