    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    - Today, Railways Explained team discusses German proposal to re-establish the network of EU international long-distance high-speed passenger trains - the so-called Trans-Europe Express 2.0 or just TEE 2.0.
    But, what was the TEE 1.0?
    For younger part of our viewers, it was a network of fast and comfortable international trains that existed in Europe from 1957 to 1995, connecting only major cities, and mostly dedicated to business class passengers.
    It was followed by the attempts to syncronize rules, standards and procedures of different European countries in order to enable faster travel times, but it also had significant impact on the development of modern rolling stock.
    At the peak of its operation (1974), the TEE network comprised 45 trains connecting 130 different cities, from Spain in the west to Austria in the east, from Denmark in the north to the Italy in the south.
    However, if you thought Europe will never see TEE trains again, you may be wrong…
    In this video, we are also trying to present a proposal for TEE 2.0, as part of the wider EU agenda to combat climate change (EU Green deal), and, in the light of the activities of European Commission that recently marked the 2021 as the year of rail.
    We presented and discussed both, the TEE and the TEE 2.0, presented proposed train routes, explained the impacts and the potentials of these concepts, and finally, we gave our opion on their future.
    Enjoy!

      because air travel is heavily subsidized. and trains arent. But wait when they take the subsidies of oil gas and air travel away, and they will put some of that money towards train travel. short distance ar travel becomes suddenly very expensive as it should as aircraft make a terrible noise when they fly overhead above neighbourhoods before they make the landing. de-subsidize oil gas and air travel ( only make continental flights affordable ) subsidize trains, and there you go suddenly everyone will take the train.

      Luxembourg just doesn't have High Speed Rail. The highest you can get is 140 km/h and the next high-speed track is ~75 km to the south (Paris-Strasbourg) - much more km of actual railway. Connections to the east (Frankfurt; no reasonable route) and north (Liège; mostly 90 km/h single track) are even worse.
      So it would cost billions to connect a "larger village" (compared to Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Rome...), just for symbolism and a few politicians.

    • @alph5230
      @alph5230 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Critizens In Luxembourg the tracks are very good, and could be easily upgraded to high speed rail. It's the neighbouring countries that have a bit issue. Mainly the Belgians refuse to upgrade the Luxembourg to brussels line.

    • @Critizens
      @Critizens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alph5230 Honestly: Most sections seem way to "curvy" for a high-speed upgrade. Maybe you can upgrade the 90 km/h sections to 110/120 and the 140 km/h to 160.
      But no way you could "easily" upgrade the single-track 90-100 km/h sections to 230+ km/h double-track. That would require an entirely new line.
      Check out openrailwaymap to see how straight high-speed tracks in neighboring countries are designed compared the the existing network.
      PS: There is the "EuroCap-Rail" initiative. So let's hope for the best :)

    EU needs high speed railway network.

    • @MrToradragon
      @MrToradragon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And modernization of current one. For example in Czech Republic old lines can be upgraded to 200-230kmph with ease, in fact some preparations should be underway, but problem is that they are shared with local and freight trains as well as there simply is no alternative route for electric freight trains as other main lines are in bad shape, even so called "Right bank railway" running alongside Elbe and bypassing Prague. And as those main liens are overloaded there is no room for speed increases as the same line is used by modern Vectron that is able to run at 200kmph and old "six-wheelers" with top speed of 90kmph. This causes problems and capacity is not utilized to extent that it could be. As well KFNB from Přerov to Ostrava is overloaded. And so on. There is plan to solve it by parallel High-speed line, but after Covid I doubt that there will be enough funds to do that.
      But if parallel lines that exist would be upgraded and electrified, part of the load from main lines could be shifted away and there would be room for upgrades and speed increases. Sadly the state railway operator is either blind or don't want to do anything and there is no sign of even attempt to solve capacity problems. Yet reconstruction of some 35km of line would be able to redirect certain amount of trains from most critical part of network. There is no plan so far. When one main line was recently upgraded, no attempts to partially reroute it were made as state perhaps still believes that soon there will be high speed line. Yet it would perhaps be cheaper to rebuild the line for 160-200kmph. Well, that part should server for some time as part of HS line until it will eventually by finished in entire length.
      And what is worst, state is unable to even fix connection of lines so they would form one continuous line without need for changes of direction. So usability of certain routes is hampered by fact that more than century ago somebody build routes in that way.
      But what is perhaps most problematic is inability of Czech Republic to strike a deal with Germany for massive reconstruction of some line other than that around Elbe and base tunnel that should be build somewhere in this century.

If there would be a railway bridge or tunnel to be built between Cairnryan and Larne, trains from Berlin to Belfast and Dublin could be doable. Loading gauge isn't a problem if dual loading gauge track was used on the Irish/Ulster parts of the TEE routes that would also allow for trains from London to Belfast and Dublin too. Just a thought.

    on a first view it's quite a pleasant idea - but the important reliability on such longer routes inbetween things like privatisation-policies, commuter-focused traffic, freight et cetera won't be that easy to reach
    steady overnight offers(TEEN) as addition to HST with attractive timings on middle distances(Milan-Paris/Milan-Frankfurt/Munich-Lyon/Frankfurt-Lyon/Barcelona-Nice/Nice-Venice/Venice-Belgrade for example) could have success
    for daytime travel(TEE) it should be taken into consideration that trips longer than four hours aren't attractive enough for a "commuter-jet-society" ...
    therefore, flexible agency trains are more promising for longer liaisons

    Yes international trains are a good idea. Well done EU for breaking down the barriers with their railway legislation so that it's far more easier to run them now than in the 1960s. Not so good that the state railways led by DB (who bought out their partners in operating international night trains then shut them down) want to create a new cartel to block out any competition from running international trains.

    A great way of expanding TEE 2.0 would be through the Channel Tunnel to UK cities like Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Plymouth. If infrastructure was improved in the UK it could cut journey times to the tunnel then they could use European infrastructure. However these trains will need to be built to a smaller gauge to navigate the smaller loading gauge of the British domestic network.

      It seems the plan is to use the momentum created by the current expansion of the ÖBB nightjet network (which is already helped by SBB, and there are rumors that even some at DB regret pulling out of international night trains). And to create a new international company to run those trains - which might also be beneficial. Currently ÖBB has quite some trouble getting suitable timeslots for their night trains (especially in Belgium, France and Italy). An internation company with investment from all national railways might be able to overcome lots of red tape.

  • @Dovndyr13

    I really think it depends on the price, for i guess short distance such a train would be a good idea (like Hamburg-Copenhagen lasting 3 hours instead of 4,5 hours). But i doubt people will like it long distance, like Stockholm to hamburg or beyond, the distance is to long (els there would be more direct trains between stockholm-copenhagen). Night trains is another story, I can see people spending 14 hours in a train between Stockholm and Paris (I doubt 9 hours for that trip if average speed is 200 km/h - els the connection Hamburg-Paris/Vienna would be better today (6 hours instead of the present 9 (made by ICE driving 200 km/h some of the stretches))).

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point isn't so much that all passengers will travel the full length of the route, but that it connects multiple important cities along the route so most passengers will travel overlapping portions of it - but still there will be people who will travel long distance. Just like with EC trains today.

    • @Dovndyr13
      @Dovndyr13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephanweinberger well as said you need to travel less than 30% of its route to have a train beeing faster than planes (like less than copenhagen - stockholm) and most of the route you have fast trains (ICE/TGV). These travel relativ slow in germany because of a large car lobby i guess. I am aware that tracks are rebuilt today. Still most German train passengers would be happy if the ICE would be on time (but this program talks about speeding them up with 50% - the top speed of german ICE trains has been getting lower)
      Dont get me wrong i love the idear of copenhagen munich in 4 hours or Berlin to Munich in 3 hours. I think a lot of passenger would use it in stead of a plane.

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dovndyr13 Well, I know many people (myself included) who have no problem taking the train from eg. Vienna to Hamburg. That's currently about 9:30-10 hours for about 900km (745 as the crow flies), with fewer stops and/or improvements along the line it should easily be doable in well under 9 hours.
      But even if people onlly take the train for e.g. 500km maximum, a continuous line makes more sense than running a bunch of separate trains (where passengers will more likely need to change trains, which makes the journey less attractive to most).

      Talgo (a Spanish manufacturer) already has (semi-) high-speed variable gauge trains for many years, but how is that actually relevant to this video? Except in the Baltics, Finland and Portugal, there is no EU country without standard gauge (in the case of Spain, the high-speed network is also standard gauge). This proposed TEE project doesn't even plan to go to those countries, which are quite
      peripheral anyway (Finland can't even be reached by train except via Russia).

    • @RD-ht6go

Talgo variable-gauge trains are operated between Moscow and Berlin but they are slow trains hauled by locomotive. Plus Talgo is not the only company that holds variable-gauge technology.
      What I mean is if CRRC (a Chinese company) starts mass-producing these trains and operate it on Trans-Siberian railway and then European routes via the connections established by Belt and Road Initiative, TEE will not be competitive, unless they enter this market quickly and first, and stabilize their reputation.

    • @anonomia5535
      @anonomia5535 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RD-ht6go The question is where you would even want to use variable gauge trains in the EU (since this is really an EU project)? I mentioned the Baltics and Finland, but even that is not relevant since the Rail Baltica project, linking Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland, would be standard gauge. The only place left would be Portugal, but if they ever want to join, I'm sure they can also build a high-speed line from Spain to Lisbon in standard gauge.
      And do you think it is realistic to run a direct high-speed train route from Beijing to the EU? Or even from Russia to the EU? I don't think the passenger demand between these places is high enough to justify many (daily) routes with variable gauge trains. And if you really want to let Chinese high-speed trains run in Europe, you're already free to do so. International railway traffic in the EU has been liberalized already.

      love the contradiction of claiming that trains are expensive and then claiming its something for the 3rd world. Utterly stupid and uneducated.
      Not only europe and japan prove that trains are vital to the future, china probably overtaking us all with their train development.
      As for expensive ... not really, especially whereever car infrastructure capable of replacing trains eats away huge chunks of cities and forcing them to claim valueable land in massive scale just to not choke on cars ... the US barely manages doing without extensive train networks so far because they could expand freely, a luxury only very few developed nation had in the last hundred years. And for some years now a mass of US cities hit walls with their car centric approach as the scale of their car infrastructure simply is unsustainable, hence their infrastructure is falling apart, claiming needlessly lifes en mass and escalating debt of communities.
      Anyone who can do basic math knows that trains are worth their money and are a necessity for any densly populated developed region if the infrastructure has to be sustainable.
