This guy is an awesome teacher. He answers ALL the questions I want to ask and even the ones I know I will be asking as I learn how to work with my collar. Brilliant educator!
#1 lesson/rule to using an E-Collar (IMO) is teaching people that not all collars are the same. And need to be buying a good collar/brand (not a cheap, one level only, type) one with a rheostat and/or digital adjustable level of correction, along with a vibrate only button
I've no idea how the hell I've missed you for the last 2 years. I've been following Larry who been fantastic, I've gained loads from him I'll never stop following him, but I absolutely relate and can process everything you say, you're are so detailed and right to the point
Huge huge respect for being honest and actually using the correct terms and not being apologetic for negative reinforcement and punishment. I am a former balanced trainer that has evolved into force free training. That being said, I would love to have you discuss your philosophy and methodology on my podcast.
I have two chihuahua's who used to bark at everything from the tree branches swaying in the wind to a lizard on the window. I bought e-collars meant for large breeds to help mitigate their bad behavior. They looked ridiculous on my dogs almost looked like it weighs them down, but boy let me tell you. I attached these collars around their little necks cranked up the shocker to 99 and pressed the glorious bolt button down on my controller for around 5 seconds after the first time they started their annoying barking ritual and wow!!! To my shock (pun intended) they immediately stopped barking and jumped up in the air about three feet they ran whimpering back to their beds. No more barking, no more crying, no more anything. They are such good babies now they lay in their beds all day I haven't had to say no not once in the past week. I do occasionally press they bolt button randomly just to let they know who's boss, I think they are beginning to like it because now when I press it they start play fighting with each other viciously it's adorable. I love my shock collars and will now buy one for my cat and parrot. I think it's the best tool you can have as a pet owner to show dominance. Don't be afraid of shock collars they don't hurt your pets they just shock them kind of like when you hide behind a door and pop out on your wife...
Important Question- If we’re using the e collar the exact same way as the leash, what about certain behaviors/ commands that can’t be corrected with leash pressure?? Ex: The “drop it” command. My dog steals things he knows he shouldn’t have (paper, kids toys, shoes, etc.) and typically he’ll drop it with a verbal command. UNLESS it’s something that contains or once contained food and as of most recently it’s become a BIG (dangerous) problem… Last Month it was a bag of cookies my son was eating that our dog stole off the counter- After multiple commands to drop it, my Husband attempted to physically take it from his mouth and he bit him, to the point of drawing quite a bit of blood. (His skin was literally torn from quickly pulling his fingers away). And last week (Thanksgiving night) it happened AGAIN. But this time to my Father In Law, after the dog stole and ran off to the couch with a butter wrapper. I’m not sure why my Father In Law didn’t just let him have it, knowing my hubby was bit in this exact situation weeks before. Nonetheless, he tried to get the wrapper from my dog and he got bit. Again tons of blood. But this time more like puncture wounds as opposed to the tearing of the skin that my husband endured. It would be ideal if we could obviously catch him BEFORE he takes the item (or prevent it altogether). But that’s not practical. So I need to find a way to get him to drop the item all together. Rather than us taking it from him. So can the e collar be used for this also?
If you have a competition dog and you cannot use an e.collar (which are banned at clubs and competitions) you have to attend such sessions without wearing it. It is often the case that the dog will become collar smart. Any suggestions on how you overcome this?
My et300 mini e coller just arrived! I have a long haird german shepherd dog…. I also bought the extream winged contacts and the upgraded clip on bunge coller but im now paranoid that 1. Im doing the coller up to tight or not tight enough to get good contact 2. Im steuggling to tell if i found his working level becasue i thought i found it at 8 but then he itched around his ecoller and i stimmed him at 8 and his neck twitched more than it should have like it was wayyy to much so i dialed it back to 5 and that seemed okay but then i wasnt sure if he was feeling it at all!!! Im anxious AF to get this right 🤦🏼♂️
Curious to learn if/how the e-collar is used to cross the threshold from negative reinforcement to positive punishment. I've been using the prong to punish leash reactivity towards other dogs, and have thankfully seen so much improvement, but I hate having to prong correct in public. Would much rather be discreetly doing it with the e-collar, which he wears for negative reinforcement on walks anyways.
I have the Garmin Sport Pro e-collar for my dog. It only has 10 stim levels, vibrate and tone. Should I purchase the mini educator instead because it has more levels or does it solely depend on how my dog responds?
It does depend how your dog respond, but Garmin Sport Pro E-collar is not a good E-Collar for training. The lowest stim level is strong and the gap in stim level increment is also too large.
We use a satellite invisible fence (SpotOn) to keep our Sheepadoodle from leaving our yard and he responds to very well to it. He is also trained using a HS prong collar and walks very nicely with it - no pulling and not responsive to other dogs/wildlife any more- (Yay!!) . I would now like to start him on e- collar training for our walks, etc but am concerned about him becoming confused by the stimulation from the satellite fence vs the stim from the e collar. Can I use both successfully or must I choose one or the other? Can you give me some advice about this before I purchase a collar?
You should ditch the satellite fence. It's teaching your dog to be superstitious. It's difficult to explain in writing, but basically your dog may become scared of specific smell, specific tree, fence.... , which is very difficult to fix. Because dogs don't think like us that being far from the house is the reason for the correction. It tests the boundary and after the correction it may use memory of smell, sight, whatever context instead. You can use E collar to train your dog obedience, but you should have a physical fence. Then you teach your dog the road/ property boundary. Your dog should enjoy your presence and stay with you indoor. Not let to play unsupervised outdoor because even if it behaves, harm from outside can come.
Question!! In intermittent phase, you give dog a chance to, for example, follow through on recall without stim first, and if they do not follow through, you re-do command with stim. To be clear, on proofing phase, we stim on med/high first time command is said? No initial chance for them to follow through without stim first? Hope my question makes sense.
I have a long-haired Saint Bernard. I'm using the educator mini with wing contact points. I bought the wing contact points made of titanium to avoid a skin reaction. I fit the collar around his neck so I can put two fingers beneath the collar. we just completed the conditioning stage and he's always itching the collar. Is this something that should stop once he gets more used to wearing the collar?. I currently have him wearing the collar for about 5 to 6 hours a day and changing the position of the collar to avoid any sores. I do brush out his neck everyday to get rid of the dead hair.
- Rotate the collar more frequently - Only have it tight 20 mins before, during, and 20 mins after training sessions - If he's wearing it around the house, keep it loose - If he scratches at it training sessions, discourage the behavior by making leash pressure and keeping him moving. Some dogs will learn to scratch at the collar as an avoidance behavior.
In the proofing phase you aren’t giving the command and the stim simultaneously are you? I think that’s a bit unclear in how it is written. I imagine it would be only if the dog does not respond to command.
This is very good and useful. My dog was trained with e collar but then due to my freaking job I had no time to walk him for like a 6 months to a year. And guess what - he forgot how it works. So now I need to reintroduce it.
General speaking, you should go do research on how to prevent dog to become collar wise. There is tricks and and all for different breeds and different situation, but if you want to compete you need to become more knowledgeable yourself. You should seek a mentor and follow a whole training regime. Else, nobody would help you since you're just experimenting with your dog while placing expectation on it, while you're severely lacking in skill and knowledge. If you're experimenting, just train your dog to do basic obedience while developing your skill and knowledge.
E Collar can cause FEAR/PAIN in dogs, Eg: my dog was attacked & now she is SCARED of other dogs, we are doing positive training & so far she is doing REALLY well, when she see another dog, she is rewared with treat, BUT if she is barking, lunging at a dog, say she has a E collar on & I sap her with a E Collar, she will end up being MORE SCARED of dogs, she'll ascociate pain with other dogs & hate them more. Certain counties band E Collars for a reason the science behind them isn't good. Why can Positive trainers train their dogs without causing any pain in a positive way treats? & you have to use E-Collars, Prong Collars etc, then you show your videos of this really well train dog. Eg: the German Shepherd video you just reliesed & all of a sudden this dog isnt chasing birds, squirels etc etc he ignores other dogs, birds, squirels & he is very well behaved on his walks, HOW, how did you turn around a hyper full on dog to a submissive calm dog?? It's because you got 1 of your other trainers to do a short painful E Collar course & sapped the crap of the poor dog..People watching your video think YOU'RE So GREAT, not Why dont we use E callers on hyper 2-5yr old kids, these are reason ??
This guy is an awesome teacher. He answers ALL the questions I want to ask and even the ones I know I will be asking as I learn how to work with my collar. Brilliant educator!
Rewatching it, and still amazed such excellent content is on YT. Should have way more views and likes. This is gold in plain sight.

May I ask what motivator you had that evolved you to force-free dog draining?

Good job 👍
Great stuff as always.
Brooo. Thank you. U guys are the best 👌
This is fantastic stuff, kudos and please keep on making more content! Maybe some videos on reactivity towards other dogs !

5 or 8 should not be that different, since it has 100 levels and ppl usually use 10 or little more
Which E-Collar do you like?
Do you repeatedly tap the button to provide sensation until the dog responds to the command or press and hold?
If you can manage it, tap tap tap is slightly better. But if it's too much to manage in the beginning, just hold
If u understand negative reenforcement your on ur way to e collar glory

OK, but when I am competing, there can be no training collars....how is this navigated?
I don't believe this video was designed with competition in mind.

Can you use a lead? What are you competing in?
@patmunro3531 most dog sports do not use leashes during competition
@@sarahtenbensel2231 When I started competing there were levels eg., Puppy [6=12 momths], Junior, etc. Only the higher levels didn't allow leads.
