My guess is that the brush is sterling silver and dates from 1891 because that is when the London Assay office used a 'Q' like that at the end.
So it's a London hallmark, but not made there.
The first badge is the maker's name, but i couldn't find him. So Rich Prick he is. The lion passant which is the next badge along indicates the purity of the metal - in this case about 92.5%.
There was also a Britannia mark that would be used later and that was a slightly higher purity.
The middle badge of the three is usually where it was made and if it is in fact 3 wheat sheaves and a sword, then that indicates Chester, but it's hard to tell.

Thanks for the info; didn't know any of it.
Incidentally, I jokingly use the distinguished character in your profile as an excuse for having subconsciously influenced me as a child to become a smoker later in my adult years. Haha! In fact, I use a cigarette holder, a wooden one, similar in shape to the one that our distinguished panther used in the opening of his series.

i chose that avatar when i started learning how to shave with a straight razor, because i'd quite likely end up with a pink face and miss a few whiskers!

@@trunkerdixon It seems we've got the same sensitive skin. Well done on your apt choice of the profile pic. Haha!
I don't use razors at all; years ago, I learnt that it was a mistake to have indroduced my then razor-virgin skin to the cartridge razors. However, because I've neved used a safety nor straight razor, I've recently begun watching these shaving videos on YT so as to educate myself on them.
I only usually wear a beard, but on those rare occasions that I want to "shave", I use a Wahl Detailer, a barber-style trimmer, that I also use on my head. These trimmers get as close to skin as it's tolerable for someone with a sensitive skin like mine. Even then, my neck becomes red. Haha!

Once again Johan, great shave. Cool little brush. I have a Rooney BB 24 best badger brush. The handle is butterscotch, and the brush was made sometime in the 30s. The brush was made for the Brooks Brothers chain there in England. Have a great day, and safe travels on your trip.

Hi Lance. I am a big fan of butterscotch brush handles. I don't have one but when the right one comes across I will try to buy it. Now a vintage one that is close to a hundred years old. that is a treasure. Congratulations!

@@Shave_n_Butcher I was absolutely thrilled when I came across that brush on Etsy. One of the best things about it is that it was listed as mint condition, and when I got the brush, it was truly just that. Almost went with a vintage Simpsons, but there was quite a bit of patina on the Simpsons handle. I have two butterscotch handles one of course being the Rooney, and the other is a razorock beehive style handle. I cannot quite remember what the knot size on that beehive brush is, but it is quite nice for the price. That vintage 1899 brush you got sounds quite cool.

Cool brush. Have a great trip to London! I don't think it's really old, but I have a Plisson HMW brush. That's probably as close to vintage that I have.

Ignoring the minor lapse in concentration Johan, I thought your technique and confidence with that razor was noticeable. Particularly during the first pass you looked at ease. A nice piece of history with that brush. All of your straight man lines made me want to reply with, "Is that a small brush in your hand or are you just happy to see me!"

An antique dealer (maybe one in London) can use the stamps to tell you who and when they made the handle and from what materials. Slversmiths and others have records of these stamps going back quite some time. One can only hope that the hairs are silvertips.
    Looking good in any metal.

    • @Shave_n_Butcher
      @Shave_n_Butcher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you. I shall try to find a dealer tomorrow! Sadly not silvertips.

All good questions. Given the stamps it is probably silver, bit it is not so heavy so it can't be solid silver.
