A nice bit of history on this tree. Great to see how it came along into a nice bonsai tree. The pruning done on this tree will give some nice spring growth.
Great retrospective of your natal ficus’ evolution and refinement; significant transformation. And you could have knocked me over with a feather when you said “I don’t want any aerial roots at all.”! Excuse me? Is that you, Nigel?? Beautiful pruning today. Strong example of what the “clip and grow” method can produce in a very short period of time. Great video Nigel, thanks for taking the effort to share the timeline like this. I’m based in South Africa and bought my first ingenious ficus which just happens to be a Burt-Davyii variety a couple of weeks ago from an indigenous nursery in JHB. Feel super inspired after this video!
It surely came a long way. Good development over the years! A few years ago I watched a documentary on some special tree species. If I remember correctly, I believe one of them was Auracaria in Argentina, and the other one massive Ficus in Africa. Unfortunately I haven't found the documentary ever since, but I remember it being really interesting.
Nice job! I have learned a lot from watching you. I have a three-trunk bonsai ficus from cuttings from a tree that I bought over 40 years ago and grew at work. That tree is now 15 years old. I grow it in a natural umbrella shape and repot every 2 years. I’m also experimented with small bonsai. Outside, I have maples and mountain ash that pop up on my property. They survive the winter in pots (Nova Scotia).
Nigel, have you ever thought of selling successful cuttings from some of your established and mature trees? I know for me personally I would love to own such a thing. Especially your old ficus trees. And then maybe you could afford a really expensive Mature tree that you never thought you could own like the ones you talk about.
Greetings from South Africa. Ficus burtt-davyi [veld fig] and Ficus natalensis {natal fig] are different species. We also use Ficus ingens [rock fig] for bonsai. All indigenous here.
Hi Nigel in your Aug 2019 video you refer to the tree as a burst davyhi but further along it becomes a ficus natalensis , it looks very much like a burst davyhi not a ficus natalensis a natalensis does not have a sharp pointed leaf I think it is a burst dayvhi #3 , a big leaf burst dayvhi
Nigel, In the first clip you refer to this plant as a Burtt Davyi ficus, then later a Natalensis. Are they one and the same? I thought they were different varieties of ficus.
Nigel when you repotted this tree in May of 2022 your soil mix looked much different than the usual soil mix. Was it different? If yes, do you mind explaining why? Thanks!
Good to see yiu call it burt Daveyii in the begining. That was one of my 2 IDs of it for you or ficus burkei. Not a ficus Natalensis. Therfore not a "Natal fig" though all three grow in the natal region of South Africa
I need help. I have had flying root aphids on all my trees i couldnt kill them for months, now i have thrown all my trees and all soil… how long do i have to wait before getting new trees? I live in an apartment in sweden, now without a single tree, for how long can the monsters survive?

Why the cool basement treatment? These appear to grow in southern Africa where "winters" are 20+ C
