To me it's all about contact printing. The cost does not even enter into it. With a single properly exposed negative can supply endless possibilities for producing various methods of contact printing. You end up with a physical "thing" a one off.
Ignore the critics. If you can afford it, it's legal, and you want to do it, why not? All the arguments you mentioned others gave you on why not to do 8"x10" equally apply to 4x5, medium format, or film in general. What they are really saying is "stay with the crowd," "don't be bold, unique, or independent," and "you need to confirm my bias by making the same decision I did, and everyone else made." Whether cameras, cars, pistols, or bows, I don't care what the sheeple are doing. I'll learn, listen/read those more experienced, take classes, experiment, and then decide what makes the most sense for me, in my situation, given my preferences. I am contrarian by nature. If I see everyone moving in one direction, as if by command, I want to know why -- and I am very skeptical and wary of all the cheerleaders and touts urging me to join the crowd "faster, faster" while refusing to answer basic questions, "why that way?" or "why not this other way?" I am not saying everyone is your enemy or giving you bad advice -- frequently they discourage those they care most about from taking risks. That's a herd mentality. You have to decide whether to stick to the herd or strike out on your own. Best wishes.
