    So, today we're going to talk about highway driving and try to give you some highway driving tips. We'll start with what is usually the most difficult part for a beginner, and that would be actually getting on the highway. The reason that's more difficult is because the cars that are already on the highway are going at a greater speed than you are merging in.
    This is where the use of the lane to merge becomes most important. You have to use that lane to build up your speed and try to get your speed up so that then it would be easier to blend in with the cars that are already on the highway. So, you don't want to come to the end of that merge lane and then stop. At that point it will be very difficult to get on. You have to use the merging lane to accelerate, build up your speed, and keep checking your mirror on the left and turning your head to make sure you've got a good safe distance to merge onto. Then, when that occurs you move onto the highway.
    Once you get on the highway my recommendation is that the best lane to usually drive in would be the middle lane. The left lane is generally used for passing. The problem with staying in the right lane is that you've got to deal with those cars getting on the highway at every single exit. So, my recommendation is stay in the middle lane.
    The speed is greater on the highway which means that things can happen much more quickly, so that space is so important in highway driving. You need to have space in front of the car and behind the car, to the left and right at all times.
    If you're going to make a lane change you're going to do so by putting your signal on and indicating the way you want to make that pass whether it be to the right or to the left. Then you're going to look and make sure it's real safe to do so. Then move your car from one lane to the other.
    When is a good time to get back into the lane that we came from? The answer to that is that we need to see the vehicle that we passed in our rear view mirror. When you can see that entire vehicle in the rear view mirror it is then okay to move back to that right lane.
    So, those are some tips that you can use if you want to have some safe, comfortable highway driving.

    Whenever you feel drowsy while driving, park your vehicle immediately at a safe spot, lock your doors, crack a window, set your alarm if needed and take a quick nap. Never fight back drowsiness.

    1. Use the merge lane to build speed in order to merge without affecting traffic
    2. Drive in the middle lane in order to avoid the passing lane on the left and the merging cars from the right.

  • @PyroAnonymous
    @PyroAnonymous 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Left Lane is for *passing only*
    On a 2 lane highway, you should drive on the right lane and pass of the left. Once you passed, get right back in the right. If you see a car wanting to merge onto the highway on the ramp, merge to the left lane to let them safely merge in the highway, once it's all clear, get right back in the right lane. Varying in some justifications, if you see a cop pulled over on the right shoulder, merge towards the left lane and once you pass the cop, get right back in the right lane. If you are unable to merge left, which you should, slow down!
    On 3+ lane highways, you'll be fine on the middle lane, but if you're traveling very slow compared to traffic flow, you should then be on the rightmost lane.
    Regardless of you are exceeding the speed limit or not, if you are slower than traffic flow, keep right, be courteous and let faster traffic pass.

  • @CooleKip1

    In most European countries it is illegal to stay in one lane the whole trip. We have to use the rightmost lane unless we want to pass a slower vehicle, usually trucks because their speed is limited to 55 miles an hour. Passing on the right hand side is illegal too, and the tickets are expensive. It makes no sence sticking to your (middle) lane like an idiot. If there is a exit/merging lane coming up, you can make way if need so.

    Why can't I find a consensus on this: if you are passing someone slower than you do you go back in the original lane you were in(given that it is safe to do so)? Or do you stay in the left lane the WHOLE time? I understand if you end up staying there because maybe the innermost lanes really are slow and you end up having to pass everyone but if there were to come a point where your speed could be maintained do you usually switch back?

    That, and people shouldn't be lingering in the fast lane. Traffic gets extremely terrible because there's always that one person in the fast lane that doesn't want to get over. It's common courtesy to get over, if it's safe, when you see someone coming up on you when you're in the fast lane. Or at least that's what I've been taught.

    It is "his" recommendation to stay on the middle lane, wow, right after you get your license, simply make your own recommendations, and to the hundreds of cars traveling faster than you, just give them one lane on the left to fight over.

    The left lane is not for passing it's for driving faster on long car trips

    • @chanellynn97
      @chanellynn97 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      no it is for passing

    • @razorfang2
      @razorfang2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the left lane really IS for passing. #1 lane is the passing lane or the fast lane as some call it. Middle lanes are for thru traffic. #2 land should be used when people are done passing in the #1 lane to be courteous to anyone else going higher speeds in the fast lane. Right most lanes are typically used for slow traffic, merging off, and merging on. But the sole purpose of the fast lane isn't for people going great distances at great speeds. People use the fast, passing lanes quite a bit and they aren't going on long trips.
