I disagree. Just having the same symbol doesn't make random substitutions correct. In abstract math, most variables in formulas are dimensionless. In physics, most variables have dimensions. So for example the last step equates an "a" having dimensions m/s^2 with a dimensionless "a", which is not correct. But even if dimensions were preserved, some formulas have necessary context that must hold, such as a, b and c being sidelengths of a right triangle for pythagoras. An acceleration and a magnetic field do not form a valid right triangle, at least not one with the speed of light as the sidelength of the hypotenuse.

I worked backward from E = mc². Surprisingly, it worked out pretty quickly: I only had to backtrack once! It might have taken an hour total to figure it out, but I think taking a break in the middle really helped. I was honestly pretty surprised when it came together.

You could do this if you introduce fractions that make units of unity (scalars) and then rework it mathematically correct. You could have used some integration trick when the outer product from the Lorentz Force arose. You did things in letter sense right all the time except for then f = q[E+(v x B)) and v x B means det[r v B] and r = [i, i, k], v = [v_x, v_y, v_z] and B = [B_x, B_y, B_z]. So yeah you shouldve worked out those first and then did some clever manipulation. You didn't specify that formula is valid for optical lenses where P=1/f and not optical mirrors where P=-1/f
