For everyone seeing this video now. This was posted 5 years ago. If I were to make a walk through type video again, I would put more effort into it and do a better job. I know some people like this video and some people don't for different reasons. I'm ok with the constructive criticism for it will help me make better videos on the future. I know there have been quite a few questions asked here. Some I have answered and some I haven't been able to answer. Since this video, I got a digital scanner and haven't played with an SDR or anything like this for a while. I am very happy with the amount of comments and views on this video.
I would suggest breaking it into 2 or 3 videos. One on choosing equipment. Second on setting everything up. Third on getting the software and equipment working and how to start decoding a system. Good work!
"Un-check listen to this device.." Best advice I've got. I watched a few of these videos, and none said this. I was getting staticy calls that were near impossible to hear through, and was going nuts trying to figure it out. I was using Unitrunker and kept changing settings with no luck. _This_ was what fixed it.. my box was checked.
If I were to make a walk through video like this again, I would put more effort into it and do a better job. This was 5 years ago and I was newer with TH-cam videos at the time. I'm ok with constructive criticism.
I just want to say (for now) that even though you kind of stepped back and forth through this, it sounds like the easiest setup I have found. That being said, if this actually works and I am able to hear the state police that is on P25 in my area, I will come back here and like the video.
I appreciate it. Any further videos like this will be a much better step by step walk through. This was sort of quick and un organized for me 5 years ago.
Install SDR#, place DSDplus files into SDR# folder, install the DSD plugin into the SDR# folder, Install Virtual-Audio cable, then from there you can access DSDplus and adjust your settings, like the bandwidth 12,500, etc.
ZADIG TIP! Open All and find "Bulk IN Interface '0'" to add driver too. Any other selection will add driver to other USB device , like mouse, and now wont work. Sorry did not read other 160 comments to see if already explained.
If you want more room on your taskbar, right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar, slide your pointer to "Cortana", and then click on "Show Cortana icon". That big search box will shrink to a small ring (Cortana symbol).
Are there any inexpensive 800MHz beam antennas with pretty good gain. I don't get a strong enough signal to give me good P25. Breaks ups with garbled audio. I am thinking about using a UHF TV antenna mounted vertical unless I can find or build something cheaper. I verified my setup works by driving closer to the P25 transmitting antenna giving me a much stronger signal and I had pretty good audio.
HI I NEED YOUR HELP i have set up my RTLSDR dongle as you say to do and it is work but i have one problem the voice is clear on to receive but after 10minutes it cuts out and i can't understand any thing it songs all GARGLE and i cant understand anything CAN YOU LPEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT THANKS
Thanks so much for taking the time to walk through this, but I'm still a bit confused. At 13:00 you show the Playback menu in Sounds, with Speaker/Headphone set to default (and VB Cable Input NOT selected as default). You also say, "make sure the speaker you want is selected as default for playback." However, at 16:23 you show VB Cable Input marked as default in the Playback options. Which is it supposed to be?
I am unable to listen to the signal coming through. I'm listening to the video so I know that that speakers work, but I am unable to hear anything from SDRSharp. Just wondering if you can give me some insight on how to turn on sound. I followed your video, and even rewound a couple times and have done everything you said, but still am unsuccessful.
This is a very neet video and thanks..good way to go into the next step after getting sir sharp going..but my next step is to jump right to trunked p25 and of course I know the ops frequencies on the local tower other than the data control freq.,but I wonder if I can use this with some kind of trunking control software to monitor the control freq.then of course we have talk groups in there...a little fancier than just monitoring one freq like your doing down there.our p25 stuff is in the 700s and yes I have long range uhf antennas as I just sold my 996xt to a local for his listening pleasure as he is not into high tech stuff like this..thanks have a nice day...
I've come across several of these videos yours is encompassing quite a large amount which I did not find in other videos that had five parts to them although what I am suspicious of is that do you need to run unit trunker with this and do you need to SDR dongles I am utilizing mine on the Connecticut State Police to monitor and as others have quoted I do not get any audio now I've gone back several times to recheck my configurations and I do have what you suggested any input would be greatly appreciated
You only need 1 SDR for P25 Phase 1 conventional. P25 Phase 1 or 2 Trunking you need 2 SDR. There may be updated versions of software or files at thise point.
Hey, I have been trying to get DSD+ to work on my system for a few weeks now with little progress being made. I am using an RTL-SDR and I have everything set up like you did but DSD+ is not able to output any audio. I can see that it is decoding P25 phase 1 data with a good signal strength but it isn't working properly on any frequency I try. Can you give me some advice on what to try next? Thanks!!
Hi jarred,,, I have watched your video and I like it very much ,,I have been excited about this device!!! please Can you tell me exactly what your model is? with best regards

What's the difference between P25 and P25E? I followed the steps and receive some encrypted Fire Dept Radios but one that says P25E was hearing at first but then could not hear again, the only thing I noticed is that the DSD+ message box displays a message after Sync: P25p1 NAC:501 TDU (Muting Encrypted Voice) but I cannot hear no decoded voice.
I know this is 3 years old lol but in case anyone comes to these comments anything that has an uppercase E after it means that it is fully encrypted and there is no equipment that will allow you to listen to it.
Jarred, Thanks for the video. Just wondering how SDR# is setup to use 2 RTL-SDRs with DSD+ to copy P25 (phase 1) the control channel and to also scan the voice channels. The network I listen to has 16 voice channels from 854 to 861 MHz. After watching the video, I see the CC info scrolling but How do I get the 2nd RTL-SRD copying the 16 voice channels? Regards, Don
I use Unitrunker version 1 to handle the control channel and voice receiving, then pipe the audio out to DSD+. Unitrunker handles all the trunking aspects. In fact, version 2 of Unitrunker, which is very much still in beta, doesn't even need DSD+ to decode P25 phase 1. It does it all on it's own.

Hi so I had it all up in running with channels and all. No sound came through but i did see the event log had 114 and stuff was scrolling through dsd plus now it's doing nothing. Can you help me fix sound and the other issue?
If you see data scrolling but no audio, check that your audio settings are correct for the decoding software and the output is to your speakers. As for the ddl file, I’m not sure.
iam following step by step(cause its my first time playing with sdr on windows) and wow! you almost explained everything for at least two times! i will subscrube you btw
An unencrypted P25 Phase 2 signal can be decoded using a capable scanner or through a similar process as in the video but, with 2 receivers and different software.
Currently the only way to listen to phase 2 is to use the OP25 program, which is a Linux program. I am not a linux user, but have read where many have had great success using linux and OP25, which only needs 1 dongle for P25 phase 2 trunking reception.
No it cannot. Decoding and listening to an encrypted radio transmission that you are not authorized for is not only extremely difficult to do but, is also highly illegal.
If you are authorized and have a need to be on the system. The authorizing agency should have issued you a radio or programmed your existing radio. You shouldn't have to ask this question.
@@JaredPaxton im asking for my own knowledge, I have a APX6000 and a XTS5000 programmed for the system. I dont NEED a SDR to listen to anything I was just curious.
Wondering if anyone can help us, we are a 6th form science club, we are launching a weather balloon, we have everything in place materials wise and are using SDR for tracking (Pi in the sky board with funcube dongle) and are struggling to find our signal /decode something meaningful. Any help from anyone with experience would be greatly appreciated?
True if you have to be able to work with software but most scanners are way too much money. If you are fine with that then go for it. SDR can let you listen to so much more for way cheaper.

If it is encrypted, you will not decode it. P25p1 is P25 Phase 1, NAC is the Network Access Code much like a PL Tone on Analog. I'm unsure what P25E is unless it's telling you it's Encrypted.

Yes, even using the dsdplus2 version, and the gains are also regulated, you have some link where you talk about the digital reception.Grateful
Sergio Henrique did you load the DSDPlus DLL files into the DSDPlus file folder?
Okay once everything is setup for DSD then I press play for SDR everything will freeze. Not sure what's going on here.. Any clues?
EP Washere what freezes? Your computer or the waterfall/signal display?
You can run install-rtlsdr in the sdrsharp folder and it will get zadig
+Chad Smith it has been a while since I set this up but, yes I believe you are correct.
great walk through when i go to open dsd plus it says "lame_enc.ddl not found" where can I get that file at safely?
Hi so I had it all up in running with channels and all. No sound came through but i did see the event log had 114 and stuff was scrolling through dsd plus now it's doing nothing. Can you help me fix sound and the other issue?
If you see data scrolling but no audio, check that your audio settings are correct for the decoding software and the output is to your speakers. As for the ddl file, I’m not sure.
is this walk through still good for today, Im doubting
Unsure. I haven't used a dongle radio in years.
@@JaredPaxton maybe you should comeback and join us again, I can sure use you right now
Is there any dll to decode cellphone signal?
How do you start the dsd plus.
Are you doing this with JUST ONE SDR. Because if your using two. you souls let everyone know that your using two SDR RADIOS DONGLES .
One SDR was being used.
Is there an android equivalent setup for this? Trying to run it on my tablet with HackRF One
I'm sure there is but I don't currently know the process to set it up.
dude its very very full walk through i feel like an idiot :/ (recheck everything!)
but thanks
Wolf Ly I'm not sure I understand.
iam following step by step(cause its my first time playing with sdr on windows)
and wow! you almost explained everything for at least two times! i will subscrube you btw
Wolf Ly I'm glad it worked for you. Thanks.
Does it work with encrypted channels
You cannot easily or legally decode encrypted transmissions.
how do i listen with a bluetooth earpiece
Gerald Ellis connect your Bluetooth earpiece to your computer and select that device for the audio output.
thx so much bro.........may the nerd force be with you

Hey Jared can I email u with a couple questions if u don't mind
Is it possible to decode P25 Phase 2?
An unencrypted P25 Phase 2 signal can be decoded using a capable scanner or through a similar process as in the video but, with 2 receivers and different software.
@@JaredPaxton Thanks for the reply. And I'm guessing encrypted is impossible, right?
Technically not impossible but highly illegal and highly difficult.
I have no sound?
That's odd.
You didn't show how to tune and decode anything.
Can you listen to P25 Phase 2?
Jim Leon Yes, you need 2 receivers.
Jared Paxton How are you going to do that, when DSD+ doesn't currently decode phase 2?
Currently the only way to listen to phase 2 is to use the OP25 program, which is a Linux program. I am not a linux user, but have read where many have had great success using linux and OP25, which only needs 1 dongle for P25 phase 2 trunking reception.
what about provoice?
Can this bypass encryption
No it cannot. Decoding and listening to an encrypted radio transmission that you are not authorized for is not only extremely difficult to do but, is also highly illegal.
@@JaredPaxton im authorized and have encryption keys for my system i was just curious if they had the ability to decrypt
Dam dude I need someone to show me how to do this type of stuff??
Watch the vid m8
Can u help me
Wondering if anyone can help us, we are a 6th form science club, we are launching a weather balloon, we have everything in place materials wise and are using SDR for tracking (Pi in the sky board with funcube dongle) and are struggling to find our signal /decode something meaningful.
Any help from anyone with experience would be greatly appreciated?
Saffy T you should be using APRS.
nice video but still no audio
Cool, but what a pain having to use the computer.
I prefer just getting and programming a digital scanner; easier and portable.
True if you have to be able to work with software but most scanners are way too much money. If you are fine with that then go for it. SDR can let you listen to so much more for way cheaper.
Is that legal?
connie Kruse Yes it is as long as long it is not encrypted.
Hey dude email me of you can I need one of these for my birthday on June 1at
I'm not going to do anything. Thank you

I hatw the free apps!!
What's the difference between P25 and P25E? I followed the steps and
receive some encrypted Fire Dept Radios but one that says P25E was
hearing at first but then could not hear again, the only thing I noticed
is that the DSD+ message box displays a message after Sync: P25p1
NAC:501 TDU (Muting Encrypted Voice) but I cannot hear no decoded voice.

If it is encrypted, you will not decode it. P25p1 is P25 Phase 1, NAC is the Network Access Code much like a PL Tone on Analog. I'm unsure what P25E is unless it's telling you it's Encrypted.
