What Makes Planetarian's Yumemi Work Well

Yes I knew this would be bad but I care about the future of the human species and that future was fun
When Yumemi was dying, and in her final moments (when she couldn't see him), she said "It seems I am indeed malfunctioning slightly, afterall." I realised, that she was scared that maybe he left her and she was going to die alone. As she said before that when she doubts whether the humans will not return she hopes that it's a bug in her program, and that she's malfunctioning. This was really sad for me. I only got it on my rewatch.
After all these years Yumemi's projection scene is one of my all-time favorite KEY moments. It ranks up there with Tomoya's "Remembering Scene" in CLANNAD and "that" scene in the Little Busters! Refrain route. They all epitomize KEY for me: that mastery of finding hope in situations of overwhelming despair. Most of the KEY games are generally bittersweet-optimistic takes on the human condition, and planetarian is no different. The projection scene is so sad because of its use of dramatic irony: Yumemi's optimistic vision of mankind's future and relationship with science is juxtaposed against the Junker's immediate reality, a failure of humanity to collaborate and reach the stars. But by the end, even if Yumemi cannot enact her vision of the future herself, we are given hope by the Junker's awakened optimism in the future and his tenacity in spreading her message.

As a huge fan of Planetarian, I'm happy to see this video on her. She's easily my favorite Key heroine and in general is one of my favorites in fiction. Great breakdown on what makes her character work here!

When I heard that she'd be offline in just a week, I knew there wasn't going to be that 'good ending' of the two of them making it out together.
She's a really underrated heroine in my opinion. Shes not only trying to carry out her duty but her very existence combats the hopelessness of the world she lives in.

I just read it. First thing i had to know was if the junker survived and got away with Yumemi's memories. And i can now sleep a bit better knowing that he did.
Planetarian works great for me because, even tough you can predict the plot with ease, it STILL hits very hard. Especially the part when you see the stars at last. I'm weak against moments like that! 😭
Kyousuke from Little Busters made the visual novel my favorite in existence with Planetarian being my second favorite simply because of Yumemi. Thirdly, Sonhara and his ending in Clannad are what really made me enjoy that visual novel. Haku and Oshtor made me enjoy Utawarerumono.
Nice review! Yumemi is best girl indeed, a true embodiment of hope and innocence that so many of us human beings lack. I played only the VN and never touched the shows, but the game completely blew my mind, and I cried for the longest time after anything I've ever played before. She have some sort of pureness that you want to protect, but you're unable to do!
