      I love the SNES version, titled Super James Pond, but it's mostly nostalgia. As a platformer, it's enjoyable but not great. C+ or B-

    John Madden '92's best feature is when the QB gets injured, an ambulance cruises onto the field and plows through everyone in it's way to get to the QB! Cracked me up every time!

    Fun fact: Rings of Power has an Easter egg that, when a certain button combination is held when you boot it up, makes the girl in the Naughty Dog logo appear topless.

    Just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this series! I played a lot of EA Sports games on the Genesis back in the 90s but I had never played JMF ‘92 or ‘93. Thank you for the tip- they are excellent! Such a great blend of arcade and sim, just as you said.

    John Hancock: Rings of Power has more content than any other RPG for the system. You can do much more things than the manual says.

    EA was golden in the early 90's. Back in college my buddy had NHL '92, i had NHL '93 along with Road Rash II, Bill Walsh College Football, PGA Tour Golf II. That's all 6-7 of us played for 2 years, with some sort of tourney just about every day. Good times.

    I just LOVE The Immortal, and I was actually able to finish it back in the day. I never understood how such a rich game on every level never got a sequel, I find it quite underrated. I just love the whole atmosphere of the game, its graphics, its engaging story with all its mysteries and twists, and its very competent soundtrack. It deserves at least a remake!

    For a country kid with no PC, F22 Interceptor was the closest to a flight sim as I was going to get. Nostalgia glasses make it seem better than it really was, but I sunk hundreds of hours into that game. And it was pretty deep for a Genesis game.

      I agree wholeheartedly...From the Genesis/SNES to PS2/OG XBOX/GameCube era...EA was top-notch and it had so many fun games to play...Since then, a copious amount of Microtransactions, half-assed games and overuse of DLC’s destroyed them.

    F-22 is special to me. Very close friends of the family, an older couple, bought a Genesis at launch (they had grandkids that would regularly visit them). I remember hanging out at their house as a kid and they had three games: Altered Beast, Arnold Palmer Golf and F-22 Interceptor. AB because it was a pack-in, APG because the guy was an avid golfer and fan of AP, and F-22 because he was a retired Air Force colonel and enjoyed flight sims.
    All 3 of those games mean more to me than any other Genesis games, because of those memories, even though I received my own Genesis a little later and played an extensive library of fantastic games.

    Great review. I used to love EA back in the 80's and 90's. It was a completely different company when Trip Hawkins was running things. I really loved Buck Rogers Countdown To Doomsday, but I had played through that on the Commodore 64, so I never got the Genesis release. My favorite game you reviewed here was Road Rash. It came out during my first year of collage and I have a lot of fond memories playing it with friends. Back then I preferred the computer version of Fairytale Adventure but in present times have found the Genesis version a lot of fun when playing it on a newer clone system that can save your place so you don't have to deal with that horrendous password system.

    I picked up a near pristine copy of The Faery Tale Adventure from the local store I get my vintage stuff from. They had Dark Castle there previously for about a month, and when it sold, I joked it was bought not because anyone -wants- to play it, but to only add it to a collection. Well, another copy of it showed up along with TFTA. When I got home with my copy of TFTA, I opened it up and found a receipt from an Electronics Boutique that it was purchased from in 91, along with Dark Castle. Turns out it was a matched pair with it. Cases in ok description, manuals and cartridges look new.
    Long story short, I had to buy that copy of Dark Castle and have never hated having to buy a game so much before. I'll never play it again, but its now part of my collection again.
    EA published 2 more of my top Genesis games and I can't wait to see you cover them.

    Might & Magic was the first RPG I ever played at the age of 10. Because I had nothing to compare it to I put in dozens of hours and it’s a really special game to me today. Playing it now it’s pretty hard, requires strategy and patience. For the time it had a lot of variety, and as a collectibke it comes with a huge detailed instruction manual and a color poster of the world map.

  • @legionarybooks13
    @legionarybooks13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a Roman historian, I naturally had an affinity for "Centurion: The Defender of Rome". Though the battles are extremely limited in scope, I love the atmosphere of the game, and the overall "feel". Plus, if you wait long enough to push into Egypt, and succeed in negotiating an alliance, you can actually shag Cleopatra. Seriously, you go through an entirely additional cutscene with dialog choices. It blew my mind when I first had that happen. No, they don't show anything explicit, but it was still pretty risque for the time.
    Oh, and I also have fond memories of The Fairy Tale Adventure and think it's really underrated. I haven't played it in probably twenty-five years or more, so I'm curious if it still holds up.

    Is there another game for the Sega genesis that could be confused w Shadow of the beast?
    I’ve had this game stuck in my head since the 90s but I’m not sure it’s shadow. Does the cartridge looks a little different than regular cartridges? I remember there was something about the cartridge.

  • @ilj1259

    Sword of Sodan is an excellent game. One of the first games to have blood in the game. This was one of first games I bought for the Genesis... I agree... when I first played it I did not like it... it was hard to control... extremely difficult but with hours of playing and practicing I learned to like it.... and got really good at it the mixing of the potions was a nice side feature to improve abilities. I think that with all your thousands of games you didnt give this game the time it needs to appreciate it. To me I would rank it a "B". I would only give games an "F" if they are unplayable and have poor graphics. Sword of Sodan is not that bad.

    • @johnhancockretro
      @johnhancockretro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, this game is crap compared to what else is on the Genesis. Played it back in the day too. It deserved the F. Congrats on you liking and being good at it. Consensus in general of this console version is that it is indeed bad. Always going to be a small group of people that likes bad games.

    I got to defend Lakers vs Celtics a little... I purchased this game on day one and by the time this game came out the best basketball game I could remember was Double Driver on the nes,. To me, this was a great update to the genre and a start for a big franchise. Not only it got real NBA teams, but you could also play with real basketball players, you can even see the numbers on their jerseys and the players started to have signature moves. To me is a gem, plus it has music between halftimes. (Optional of course.)

    Buck Rogers countdown to doomsday needs it's own episode to do it real justice. A rank is pretty low for what is still one of the greatest games of all time.
    Glade to see you liked Fatal Rewind. I find some people either like it or hate it. I played and beat it back when it first came out. Definitely a hard game but like most old games from that time, once you learn the levels and where the keys are it get much easier.
    Star flight is a truly epic game with a pretty great story and a ton of lore to it. Game is a bit of a slow burn till you really learn the game, but once you do oh man is it so good.

    I really liked Populous and Zany Golf and NHL. They seemed more... sophisticated than what I was used to. I could never find the RPG carts. Looking forward to part 2. Regarding Madden, my uncle loved that game. I bought Mutant League Football. Bribing the ref, throwing Dynamite, using a jetpack..
    My uncle won't play sports games with me anymore.

    I think I finished Might & Magic: Gates to Another World on Megadrive back then, or at least made it to the puzzle in the middle of the lake. I'd like to say the MD version is more playable than the PC version, because IIRC the MD version displayed the names of the spells, and it used only the A/B/C/Start buttons (+Dpad). Although I think I may have muted the TV...
    Rings of Power was a game I really liked (an early open-world RPG), although the battles weren't fun (esp. if the enemy cast Frenzy). Finding the place where to get all characters to max XP easily certainly helped, and I think I had a spot where I could get infinite money and random goods as well. I can't remember how that happened, though.

    F-22 Interceptor was my favorite game next to Sonic, and the actual plane wasn't even finished at the time. It later became the F-22 Raptor.

    That NES version of the 2nd stage of "Marble Madness" rocks. I was hoping for a 16-bit rendition of it that sounds really good, but it didn't appeal to me too much. Hell, even the Captain N rendition of it sounded bad ass back then too. But as far as gameplay wise for the good ol' Genesis, I agree it's middle of the road at the end of the day.

    I love the EA box art. They packed so much info on the back of the box to help convince you to buy the game. Loved King's Bounty and Centurion. I agree that Starflight was a true gem. I remember the sense of accomplishment beating that beast! Sadly 25 years later I don't have the patience to grind through it again. But I'll fire it up once in awhile just to do some exploring and hear that sexy computer voice say "orbit established"

    Nice. I still playing bounty every now and then. Never gets old. Let's have a 2 player head to head version!! And rings of power was good once you get rolling. Buck Rogers is also dope.
