- Im back!!! I've got a 4 video series regarding Revolver coming out and this is the first one. The next video will be a short video about recreating Revolver sounds IN THE BOX. It will come with some plug-in discounts as well as some of my presets to nail that PAPERBACK WRITER Tape Delay with ADT.

We once did a live shootout using the original guitars AND amps that were available at the time, as part of Jim Elyea's VOX Guidebook. In a room of about 30 people, half the people thought it was one rig, and half the people thought it was the other. So....?
Wow! I always assumed Macca played the PW riff through a UL amp. That Bassman must be CRANKED to get that tone!
As a drummer, it's nice to hear you isolate each guitar part to actually clearly hear what's going on. Nice work matching tone and overall sound from the original recordings.

Superb matching! On Bass, Emerick in his book said he made an amp into a microphone to record Pauls bass on Paperback. So Bass to Amp through air to Amp-as-mic then board. For the Album, he realized he could just go direct so I think an engineer did an impedance matching input to the board and essentially invented bass DI for that album. No microphones were used for bass guitar at all! Love the video! And Taxman if you do it is a P90 all the way.
George’s rhythm is his Strat, and Paul’s lead was on his Casino, via the photos from the session
Their Epi had P90s and I thought it was their Epi for years. But recently I’ve heard some who recreate the sound claim it’s “clearly a hard body with p90” which is how I’ve nailed it (Ernie Ball 1999 MusicMan MM90 through a Kemper profile of an AC15 handwired) Tho ironically it doesn’t sound the same through my actual HW AC15, so, just found a lucky profile? Anywho, George had only a humbucker SG, not the typical P90 lots of Brits used, so I don’t see how Paul got any solid body P90. Hence I’m back to the Epiphone theory as it’s the most likely and he was known to play it on that session, and it’s sound IS sizzling as on Taxman, rhythm AND lead.

I've never had a chance to play any UL series VOX and I was always trying to figure out how to get similar sounds out of a SS VOX(Super Beatle/Beatle/Buckingham) even with bridging some of the channels together, i.e. linking the bass channel with Tone X full CC to blend in some bottom to the brilliant channel with MRB centered with some tone controls boosted a bit. Making that SS preamp section work hard does help. Do you think it's even possible to get close? That UL clone you have sounds really amazing.

It’s really great to see you back! Man this series is perfect for me- I’ve got a tune I’m working on that I’m trying to make sound like Paperback Writer. Can you do a video on how to get that vocal effect using the Chambers with STEED? Any tips on using the ADT plugin to get the Revolver vocal sound would be great.too- I’m sure I’m not using that plugin correctly. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your videos man I always love them. Keep up the great work!

INCREDIBLE!
The speakers plugged into the extension jack on a Twin Reverb nets this overdriven sound because nothing really happens until the volumes sail past 6 on the dial. They used that quite a bit. The Xox's pretty much speak for themselves. But the Vox Fender pairings are over the top. IMO Paul is the across the board the Best Overall Bassist of all time.

In the later years of studio work, the one piece that most leave out of the puzzle is Geoff Emerick and the Abby Road board. Emerick's use of extensive compression and revolutionary (at the time) techniques to place microphones, or different patching, etc. became legend, and ruffled many feathers at EMI. I've heard lots of 'experts' try and replicate the sounds by using amps, guitars, strings, you name it. But without Emerick and the board, it's futile.
Norman Smith started all that the album before, using drier sounds and heavy Fairchild compression on drums and guitar. Emerick started following that lead, and did new things, as did Ken Scott in 1967/68 - it's The Beatles that were always pushing their staff to evolve. (Norman did the first Pink Floyd record which is ever more progressive than The Beatles records.)

Great work! Was it common for them to do drastic tone moves on the bassman- treble all the say up and bass all the way down? Makes sense but most people would normally shy away from extreme moves like that. Makes sense though for a darker guitar like the casino!
I think it was yes. Photographic evidence also suggests the same. Very literal settings on amps

To my ears for Taxman (just my 2 cents) it sounds like either the bass man or the Fender showman amps they also had in the studio. I've gotten a similar sound using that set up.
@@bobbystereo936 Taxman solo, very likely Bassman. Taxman rhythm part definitrly sounds like SG + UL7120 amp
@@BoulevardRecording The main Taxman riff, I got a similar sound using a bassman but! It is a Harrison song meaning Harrison equipment was used such as the SG. This is very much the subject of debate.
Did Paul use all Rick bass on revolver? Was the Hofner on any songs?

I'm not 100% sure but it sound to me that is the gear you mention and flatwound strings on guitar, they have a unique sound with distortion but it's just mho, maybe i am wrong. Anyways, this is and amazing video!
Back before I started my band, REVOLVER...AN ECHO OF THE DREAM, I had just moved to Akron, Ohio in the mid 70's. I went around to every old music store in town asking them for flatwounds. They all looked at me like I was nuts. They were happy to get rid of their NOS. I gathered up all sort of makes and had fun comparing them. When I told other guitarists about what my ears heard, they mostly laughed or rolled their eyes.
