I made a list for myself, so might as well share it for everyone: 🙂 - ghibli meets dark academia: Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross - atmospheric gothic dark fairytale vibes (not horror): The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi - gilmore girls by secretly witches: The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling - unique and interesting creatures that has dark academia vibes: Vicious by V E Schwab - studio ghibli vibes (little creatures, enchanted forest, moody main chara): Among The Beasts & Briars by Ashley Poston - gothic meets cottagecore, bonus point for a forest setting: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson - to get over good omens S2: Art Matters by Neil Gaiman but also The Graveyard Book - to read with a good cup of tea: A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I Lin - makes you blush and kick your feet in the air but also has depth and provokes thoughts: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë - high fantasy book that's not about saving the world or romance: Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree - cozy romance that makes me feel something + books witches as main chara: The Very Secret Society of Ireegular Witches by Sangu Mandanna + Book Lovers by Emily Henry (for 1st prompt) - to read in your uni's cafetaria and feel like the smartest person in the place: Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus - book that has gothic vibes and a romance subplot + for an unhinged witch + about witches/with the vibe & topic of sisterhood and girlhood: Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid - sapphic vibes with witches: BitterThorn by Kat Dunn - vibey poetic book about language and meaning, preferably dark & thought provocing: Babel by R F Kuang - florence & the machine vibes but isn't fantasy and has no witches: Bunny by Mona Awad - female murderer that gets away with it: A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G Summers - feels like Francesca by Hozier: These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever - read during thunderstorm: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - gothic vibes but not a classic: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - explores female mental illness in her 20s: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath - Rory Gilmore would like: Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino - corpse bride or tim burton vibes: Coraline by Neil Gaiman - creepy mushroom vibes: Mexican Gothic by Silva Moreno-Garcia - feels like a pumpkin spice latte at the beginning of fall + dark & spooky but also cozy: Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson - feels like the dead poet's society: If We Were Villains by M L Rio - autumnal cozy fantasy with a bit of a ghibli vibe to it: Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (£1 on Kobo UK on sept 10!) - to read while drinking chai: The Girl of Ink & Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave - a heartwarming classic for autumn: The Nutcracker E T A Hoffmann - best fantasy for fall season and drinking pumpkin spice latte while reading: Uprooted by Naomi Novik - short enough to read and finish on a rainy day: Song of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti + The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - gothic queer vampires: Dowry of Blood by S T Gibson - dark academia with rivals/enemies to lovers: (Possibly, upcoming book) A Study in Drowning Eva Reid + (also possibly) Killing November by Adriana Mather - over the garden wall vibes: pending, see comments
Thanks! With these kind of video's I'm always curious if one of my requests made it in. Now I can just enjoy the video with all the different requests/recommendations 🙂
These recommendations may sound odd but for Over the Garden Wall vibes, I recommend The Secret Garden for more classical and whimsical, and Gallant for darker and more eerie.
Honestly, Peter Pan has some of the similar vibes of dark but child is here (It's not the Americana-folkloric vibes but it does have a similar vibe of "what in the world is happening?")
Adding on to this: Wildwood by Colin Meloy is the first in a middle grade trilogy that reminded me soooo much of OTGW when I first read it!!! A girl and her friend get lost in the woods while trying to find her brother, and they come across a whole world of talking animals and magic. It also has beautiful illustrations throughout :)
Time stamps 0:28 Studio ghibli meets dark academia 1:18 Atmospheric Gothic dark fairytale (but not horror) 2:11 Gilmore girls but they are secretly witches 4:20 A book that has unique and interesting creatures that has dark academia vibes 5:17 Studio Ghibli vibes (little creatures, enchanted forest, moody main character) 5:51 Gothic meets cottagecore bonus points for forest setting 6:23 A book to get over good omens s2 7:16 A book to read with a good cup of tea 7:50 A book that makes u blush and kick your feet in the air but also has depth and provokes thoughts 9:22 High fantasy book thats not about saving the world or romance 9:52 Cozy romance that makes me feel something 11:32 A book to read in ur uni's cafeteria and feel the smartest girl in the place 12:22 A book that has Gothic vibes and has a romance subplot / unhinged witch / witches vibe with sisterhood 13:33 Sapphic vibes with witches 14:08 Vibey poetic book about language and meaning (dark and thought provoking) 15:15 A book with florence + the machine vibes but isn't and has no witches 16:04 A book about a female murderer that gets away 16:43 A book that feels like Francesca by Hosier 18:04 Read during thunderstorm 18:59 Gothic vibes, but not a classic 19:44 A book that explores female mental illness in her 20s 20:17 A book that Rory Gilmore would like 21:00 Corpse bride or Tim Burton vibes 22:04 Creepy mushroom vibes 22:30 A book that feels like Pumpkin Spice Latte 23:30 A book that feels like the Dead Poets Society 24:03 Autumn cozy fantasy with a bit of a Ghibli vibes to it 24:46 Book to read while drinking chai 25:42 A heartwarming classic for autumn 26:30 Best fantasy for fall season and drinking pumpkin spice Latte while reading 27:02 Short enough to read and finish on a rainy day 28:04 Gothic queer vampires 28:35 Dark academia with rivals to lovers
idk if anyone has already mentioned it but for a similar to Over The Garden Wall type middle grade book, there is this is short graphic novel called Garlic and The Vampire and its absolutely PERFECT and it has a sequel too called Garlic and the Witch. It is just so perfectly spooky but not scary and fall cozy vibes HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
I'm surprised that no one asked for pirates, but if anyone wants to read a book that feels very automnal, rainy and that includes boats, I would recommend "the devil and the dark water". It takes place in the 16th century, there's a mystery, a very harsh life at sea for our main characters, a little romance going on to but to me, the book was very very vibey and i loved reading about life at sea.
For a cute and heartwarming classic I recommend the Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. It's short and sweet and about an American family who moves into an old English manor haunted by the hapless, overly dramatic ghost of a dead English nobleman. He can't successfully scare any of them because the adults take themselves too seriously and the twins start pranking him, so the daughter takes it upon herself to help him out. It's also really funny
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaman gets for me a Garden after the wall vibes ( but they have a pretty different plots! And its more creepy and fairytale book with childhood issues)
I was the person who asked for book like Francesca by Hozier and I literally have that book sitting on my shelf for two years now 😂 I need to read it asap!
For the Over the Garden Wall type of vibe I would recommend any of the Fairy Oak book series. I've never seen anybody recommend them but they are the perfect read for autumn, even if they don't take place during that season.
To whoever asked for dark academia with studio ghibli vibes: Modern Divination!!! The mmc is literally based on Howl from Howls Moving Castle. Also, there’s magic!!
19:04 Piranesi is actually such a good book I was so immersed in that world for such a long time after reading it I even had a few wild dreams with all the statues and stuff lol definitely recommend this book
I read an ARC of A Study in Drowning and it's perfect for Dark Academia with rivals to lovers. It also has, dark old world fairy tale vibes. I gave it five stars and can't wait to buy a physical copy in a couple weeks. ❤️❤️❤️
For the heartwarming classic I'd recommend Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Anne herself loves autumn and there are many nature descriptions (of all seasons) and it's such a wholesome story. Plus there are more books which are also great.
If someone wants philosophy but also vampires, I recently got a book called “twilight and philosophy” and it’s literally a philosophical analysis of Twilight
My dissertation was on creepy mushroom books! I'd recommend anything by Jeff VanderMeer, specifically the Ambergris trilogy (starting with City of Saints and Madmen, but push through!! The last two books are more conventional novels), and Dead Astronauts. Fungi (the short story collection), Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley (very short novella), and I've heard the Rosewater Trilogy by Tade Thompson is good!
I found it, the ultimate Over-The-Garden-Wall-vibes book!! It's "The Lantern's Ember," by Colleen Houck. I'll admit I'm only 9 chapters in, and originally I wanted to wait until I finished it to leave this comment, but I *just can't contain myself.* The story is set in rural New England and has, among other plot points, a character who made a deal with a demon in order to save his town, and ended up getting tricked into becoming one of the "Lanterns" -- immortal beings who essentially patrol the borders between the mortal world and the Otherworld. He even carries his soul around inside a jack-o-lantern! We've got dark autumnal woods, witches, a Samhain festival in a rustic little town, misty-rainy weather, a covered bridge, a spectral horse, all sorts of creatures from folklore, and a mortal character who crosses over into the Otherworld (guided by a character who says he's taking her "to meet the High Witch," but who may have some ulterior motives) -- and, again, this is just 9 chapters in. The only way you're gonna get more "Over The Garden Wall" than this, would be to rewatch the actual show! :)
At 4:51 the request was actually unique and interesting creatures and not characters. Even though Vicious is a great recommendation I am I bit sad because I would have loved a book recommendation where the characters encounter a lot of different species and like supernatural creatures that a uncommon and unique - not like witches, warlocks and werewolves.
Sadly I feel like it's incredibly hard to find books with unique creatures, especially focused on them and not just with a creature that appears for a tiny bit :( I'm also always in search for these kind of stories.
The only books I can think of that match the Over the Garden Wall vibe are the absolutely adorable "Garlic" graphic novels by Bree Paulsen. The first is called Garlic and the Vampire and the other is Garlic and the Witch.
Some other recommendations if anyone is interested 🍂 0:45 A good one is Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. It is an academy in the middle of a forest and it is a dark but quite endearing story. 13:35 This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron. It's sapphic and our main character has powers, she must learn to control them to discover the secrets hidden in her inheritance. 16:15 They Never Learn by Layne Fargo. Scarlett Clark is an exceptional English professor. But she’s even better at getting away with murder (plus is sapphic). 18:15 The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. A lot of rain in this book. One of the characters has a trauma associated with the rain. Fog vibes. 27:15 The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Very short book. The atmosphere I think of every time I read the word gothic, dark and gloomy london. 14:46-28:06 Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco. Forbidden, enemies to lover, queer vampire romance. Remy, an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires meets Xiaodan, vampire heiress and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan. As the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. I hope you like some of these. 🍂Thanks Leonie for all the recommendations, this month I plan to read These Violents Delights! 🍂
omg as soon as you read the Florence and the Machine prompt I was like RECOMMEND BUNNY RECOMMEND BUNNY!!! completely agree that Bunny and Dance Fever have overlapping vibes
the crow folk by mark stay is the PERFECT over the garden wall feeling book!!! its one of my favourite books of all time for exactly that reason, plus it has two (soon to be three) other books in its series. literally small town with pumpkin-headed foe.
You know you're in the correct channel when you get asked recomendations based on Florence and the Machine and Hozier 😂😂 thanks Leonie! Loved this video ❤ greetings from Spain 💕
I'm so glad that there are other vampire book requests. I've been so embarrassed about my recent obsession with vampire books, but I've been DEVOURING Anne Rice's vampire series haha
For a heartwarming classic for fall; I'd always say either Little Women or Anne of Green Gables. For a book similar to Over the Garden Wall, I'd recommend Snow and Rose. It's not quite the same, but I feel like the vibes are there.
Marchwood by R.A Lorensen gives me some Over the Garden Wall-vibes. You follow and meet a bunch of woodland critters as they travel through a forest to find their friend who has been kidnapped. It's very cozy and very short
28:55 so excited for A Study in Drowning! alsooo, there’s a new Allison Saft book coming out next year, its called A Dark and Drowning Tide, which is apparently also rivals to lovers! and possibly sapphic!!
bro ive read most of these and your recs are so on point, when you pulled out bunny i went wait wait wait a second, and then it all clicked before youd even started explaining, im baffled, youre really good at this sir
Heartwarming Classic for Autumn: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. A girl goes with her two new friends to their old house in the country and, due to her obsession with Gothic novels, she begins to wonder if her friends' father murdered their mother because he never seems to like talking about her and refuses to let them go in certain parts of the house (including her old bedroom). It's one of Austen's lesser talked about works, but my absolute favorite of hers. It's also her shortest novel and a satire of the books she enjoyed reading herself when she was a teenager, and when I was a teen, I too was obsessed with Gothic lit (and still am in my late 30s.) A queer Gothic vampire story: Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu. It predates Dracula and is a lesbian vampire story. :) A horror book you can read in one sitting: (it really depends on how fast you read, but...) My personal go-tos for quick horror novels are: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allen Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher by EAP, and Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
I literally just watched Northanger Abbey from 2007, a few hours ago. It was surprisingly lovely and entertaining and made me want to read the book as well!
Small Spaces by Katherine Arden is PERFECT Over the Garden Wall Vibes! It's definitely a little scarier than Over the Garden Wall, but it has that great "lost in the woods" vibe. It's a middle-grade horror series of four books (the first one takes place in the Fall, the second in Winter, etc) and it's sooo atmospheric!!
Regarding over the garden wall vibes recs: the first one: The Enchanted Mountain by Maria José Dupré (it's a brazillian book, don't know how easy it's to find but there are english versions of it) "During another vacation season at Padrinho's farm, children Vera, Lúcia, Cecília, Quico and Oscar engage in an adventure full of fantasy and mystery. They are curious about a strange light that appears on the top of a mountain, which they call Enchanted Mountain, near the farm, and decide to find out what it is. With Godfather's permission, the five run for an excursion up the mountain. Along the way they hear mysterious music that makes them even more curious. Upon reaching the top of the mountain they accidentally fall into a hole that takes them to an unknown world. They spot a house and later discover that it was actually a town. In this place everything is made of gold and ruby, including the clothes. There they discover the mystery of the light of the Enchanted Mountain." the second one is less kid friendly, but fun and quirky and I thiiiiink it could fit... maybe lol: The screwtape letters by C. S. Lewis "(...)sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man." Both are pretty quick to read
For Over the Garden Wall vibes, I would totally recommend the graphic novels "Garlic and the Vampire" and "Garlic and the Witch", by Bree Paulsen! They're totally cute and wholesome, with all the fall vibes we could wish 🤎
IT'S THE AUTUMN SEASON, AND I'M LOOKING FOR A BOOK WITH A VERY SPECIFIC NICHE VIBE AND IF I DON'T FIND SOMETHING TO SATISFY THAT SPECIFIC NICHE CRAVING; I will combust😊💓 love the intro!
For creepy mushroom vibes, I also recommend What Moves The Dead by T Kingfisher. She acknowledges it's kinda similar to Mexican Gothic (unintentionally so, MG was published while WMTD was still being written and Kingfisher says she sort of went 'well now I obviously can't publish this bc everyone will think it's just a rip-off') but it has a very unique style and it's based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Alan Poe, which. You really cannot get any more gothic than that.
I love your videos. I am a Spanish person and I am learning English with your videos, thank you for speaking so well, I hope your channel continues to grow.
Over the Garden Wall vibes in an adult novel: The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s more Arthurian than OTGW, but it’s about an old couple that goes on a journey through the wilderness to find their son, but there’s a fog surrounding them that hinders their memories. One of my fav books ever!
So for the forbidden vampire-human romance, if you don't know it already, I recommend Bloodlines (and the entire series, cuz it is a slowburn) by Richelle Mead. It is the sequel series to Vampire Academy, but easily read without reading that (I didn't and still haven't)
29:34 not a whole book but washington irving's the legend of sleepy hollow has over the garden wall vibes! perfectly autumnal, spooky but children could still read it, and overall just a great little read.
Over the Garden Wall in book form, to me, is Frog and Toad Short episodes, visual component, touching on existential themes and being veeery cute and about friendship really 10/10
A book for Over the Garden Wall vibes is "The Orchard Underground" by Mat Larkin. I adore this book, it is a YA but so gripping and the vibes are immaculate
Another book that's good to read in a rainstorm or thunderstorm is The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke, especially if you live in a place that's still pretty green outside this year/this time of year. Its set in scotland in a coastal town that has lots of mystery and, of course, witches. Its very cozy and a bit of a spooky thriller (no gore that i can remember if you're not into that). And its based on Scottish folklore if youre into that. However, it does have multiple narrators and jumps between two timelines, so if that type of writing confuses you just be aware.
Wow!! These recommendations are immaculate! You are henceforth the number one person I will be seeking recommendations from!! Also I feel like Gallant by V.E. Schwab would be a good addition to the kind of gothic and autumn vibes that kept on coming up in requests (it's on my autumn tbr for this year)
19:48 Another recommendation for the mental illness is Fig by Sarah Elizabeth Schantz. So good!! It’s the main character developing negative mental health due to her mother’s mental illness and it’s how she experiences throughout her life. I think it’s a pretty good read!!
Thank you for the recommendations to get over GO s2 haha, need that. I reread the book and honestly it helped- but now OFMD s2 is coming out and I am afraid lol (plus Hozier’s Unreal Unearth came out like right after GO s2 and I will never get over that?? Literally my fav album ever now- I appreciate you recommending These Violent Delights with Francesca). Anyway, I need OTGW-esk books and have a great day everyone!
Love your videos Leonie! Your videos have increased my love of reading, even though my preferred form of reading is Audible/Audiobooks. Keep making videos over book stuff
I grew up in North Carolina, USA, where the fall and winter seasons are very fall and winter. Rain, wind, cold falls, snowy cold winters. The wet mist making the trees dark. Beautiful. I moved to libya this spring and I am apprehensive to experience my favorite seasons in a place with not that many trees, and no snow, no fall decorations. I really need some recommendations for feeling out of place in an optimistic but still mixed feeling adventure kind of way.
another creepy mushrooms vibe book rec HAS to be what moves the dead by t kingfisher !!! reignited my irrational fear of fungus that i'd finally gotten over after watching tlou
For a Book that feels like over the garden wall i would recommend reading "small spaces" it has autumn and child spooky vibes and for those who enjoy main characters to be young/kids it also has a second book ( i haven't read it yet) it gives winter vibes
Fantasy that's not about saving the world or romance: The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina (family is complicated, magic comes from stars and nature) or She Who Became the Sun (protagonist just wants power, lots of ghosts). Read during a thunderstorm: Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. Not dark but academia: Akata Witch. Heartwarming classic: Little Women. Also there are comics of Over the Garden Wall!
thanks for the awesome recs, I added the book you recommended on my prompt + some others to my tbr! also, feel you on the "nothing can heal me after gos2 except reading more neil gaiman" bc that's exactly what I'm doing
For recommendations like Over the Garden Wall - I very frequently see "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connell recommended. It's clear the show took a lot of thematic inspiration from the book. It doesn't have the same humor as the show and I believe it's just one boy not brothers. But other than that, there's lots of similarities. It's a really dark book. I would also recommend The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, and the manga series The Girl from the Other Side.
Additional recommendation for reading with tea: the tea princess chronicles (a trilogy for the main character and a novella with another character). Spice level is low, cozy factor is high, and it’s fantasy.
Heartwarming classic: i would recommend Anne of Green Gables but for a more "grown up" Anne (she is 11 in the first book, that's not for everyone) go for Anne of the Island. She goes to college and there's sweet friendships and romace and she gets philosophical from time to time, which i LOVE. (Anne of Avonlea is also there but thats more one-room school teacher and small town vibes)
Loved the recommandations! For Over the Garden wall, I think that Gaiman's Stardust or The Ocean at the end of the lane could fit the dark fairytale vibes very well! Maybe also The Hike (Drew Magary) or Elatsoe (Darcie Little Badger)! And if you're into graphic novels, Through the woods by Emily Carroll is wonderful!
For me a lot of early American literature gives Autumn vibes so I'm rereading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Spy." Love the recs! Thanks, Leonie. I'm also beginning "Girls Against God" which seems like a promising read. Have a great week!
I have a recommendation for something with Over the garden wall vibes. It's the The Edge Chronicles, specifically The Twig Trilogy by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. It's set in a fantasy world and it's about a boy who learns that he was abandoned as a child and raised by a family of different species and he sets on a journey through the woods to search for his real parents. There are super interesting and sometimes very scary creatures and monsters on the way and the illustrations are gorgeous.
Aaaaah yeah finally, my kind of genre: super specific stuff
Which blend of studio ghibli / dark academia / gothic / cottagecore /Gilmore girls was your fav?
This is hilarious
i love how many other people are all this extremely specific demographic@@sdruss83
😂😂😂

U r the best!!!

These recommendations may sound odd but for Over the Garden Wall vibes, I recommend The Secret Garden for more classical and whimsical, and Gallant for darker and more eerie.
the secret garden is such a lovely heartwarming classic honestly
i would consider the secret garden to be the spring version of over the garden wall
Honestly, Peter Pan has some of the similar vibes of dark but child is here

Full agree with recommending Gallant here!! It's Secret Garden meets Coraline plus forbidden romance.

Thank you for your service 🙏
Under-appreciated comment !
idk if anyone has already mentioned it but for a similar to Over The Garden Wall type middle grade book, there is this is short graphic novel called Garlic and The Vampire and its absolutely PERFECT and it has a sequel too called Garlic and the Witch.
Okay but Good Omens audio book is narrated by David Tennant and Michael Sheen which makes me so happy.
This will alllllways make it #1 in my audio book library! 🥰
Another saphic vibe vampire book that is a classic (predates Dracula) and is a shorter story is Carmilla. It's a quick read and pretty good tbh.
Hey! I just popped down here to suggest that one. Honestly, I found Carmilla more digestible than Dracula.
yes!! carmilla is such a good read
19:04 Piranesi is actually such a good book I was so immersed in that world for such a long time after reading it
I even had a few wild dreams with all the statues and stuff lol
definitely recommend this book
it's finally autumn, it's THE reading season! your recommendations are always amazing so i am gonna trust you once again hehe
I was browsing through your old autumn videos this week and now you're bringing up another episode of fall recommendations! Girl, what a timing! ❤😂
I recently read the graphic novel and it's very autumnal!
yes! i agree
Oh yesssssss I adore it
You have such a way of making every book sound amazing. I want to read all of them now.
11:27 I was truly questioning how you were wearing layers when I KNEW you are also dealing with a heatwave in the middle of September
If someone wants philosophy but also vampires, I recently got a book called “twilight and philosophy” and it’s literally a philosophical analysis of Twilight
That sounds like an amazing niche present 😂❤
Is it good??
My dissertation was on creepy mushroom books! I'd recommend anything by Jeff VanderMeer, specifically the Ambergris trilogy (starting with City of Saints and Madmen, but push through!! The last two books are more conventional novels), and Dead Astronauts. Fungi (the short story collection), Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley (very short novella), and I've heard the Rosewater Trilogy by Tade Thompson is good!
This is so valuable! I hadn’t heard of half these books. Thanks!
Jeff VanderMeer is an amazing author, and I highly highly recommend Dead Astronauts! what a mesmerizing book
OMG thank you so much??? I was the one who asked for creepy mushroom vibes 🥲
@@vnsvictrix In that case, another rec for you: What Moves the Dead, by T Kingfisher. It’s a quick read, and an excellent choice if you’re a Poe fan.
Those look so cute!!! Great rec, thanks!
I second this!!!!
It may be autumn but it’s still way too hot out where I live 😭 thank you so much for the recommendations!! 🍂🍁
Me too, I live near Phoenix and it was 114 and 112 this past weekend. It's supposed to get better soon, but it's hot now. Stay cool 😎
Fr, where I live even though it’s about to be fall we still have 80’s for the 10 day forecast, hurry up sweater weather!!
Some other recommendations if anyone is interested 🍂
0:45 A good one is Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire.
great recs! i read "they never learn" recently and it was the perfect book for that prompt!
@@ladansemakabre it's so good, definitely in my pile of 'good for her' 🤭
@@laviestbelle3760 oh if you've got more recs i'm listening 👀☝
Wayward children yaaaaas. I'm 5 books in and so happy.
Your book recs are always my favorite, so I was especially excited when I saw this was posted
omg as soon as you read the Florence and the Machine prompt I was like RECOMMEND BUNNY RECOMMEND BUNNY!!! completely agree that Bunny and Dance Fever have overlapping vibes
the crow folk by mark stay is the PERFECT over the garden wall feeling book!!! its one of my favourite books of all time for exactly that reason, plus it has two (soon to be three) other books in its series. literally small town with pumpkin-headed foe.
Same
THOSE BOOK COVERS ARE SOOOOO PRETTY 😭
even jus talking about dark, atmospheric books is soo cozy
For a heartwarming classic for fall; I'd always say either Little Women or Anne of Green Gables. For a book similar to Over the Garden Wall, I'd recommend Snow and Rose. It's not quite the same, but I feel like the vibes are there.
Marchwood by R.A Lorensen gives me some Over the Garden Wall-vibes. You follow and meet a bunch of woodland critters as they travel through a forest to find their friend who has been kidnapped. It's very cozy and very short
the ex hex fits that prompt so well it has perfect Gilmore Girls meets Halloween Town vibes
It's also her shortest novel and a satire of the books she enjoyed reading herself when she was a teenager, and when I was a teen, I too was obsessed with Gothic lit (and still am in my late 30s.)
A queer Gothic vampire story: Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu. It predates Dracula and is a lesbian vampire story. :)
A horror book you can read in one sitting: (it really depends on how fast you read, but...) My personal go-tos for quick horror novels are: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allen Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher by EAP, and Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
I literally just watched Northanger Abbey from 2007, a few hours ago. It was surprisingly lovely and entertaining and made me want to read the book as well!
i just finished northanger abbey and i love it so much!
Regarding over the garden wall vibes recs:
the first one: The Enchanted Mountain by Maria José Dupré (it's a brazillian book, don't know how easy it's to find but there are english versions of it)
"During another vacation season at Padrinho's farm, children Vera, Lúcia, Cecília, Quico and Oscar engage in an adventure full of fantasy and mystery.
There they discover the mystery of the light of the Enchanted Mountain."
the second one is less kid friendly, but fun and quirky and I thiiiiink it could fit... maybe lol: The screwtape letters by C. S. Lewis
"(...)sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man."
Both are pretty quick to read
16:44 Francesca is literally Achilles and Patroclus' (from The Song of Achilles) song !!!!
For people looking for a tea-centred book i definitely recommend A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers!!
That one’s on my reading list!
I needed this video for my soul, my health, my spirit, etc
For cottage core/gothic/smell of rain, i also thought of Bitterthorn! There is a focus on nature, tending to a home which is a gothic castle ☺
These videos are always very interesting to see how people manage to interpret these asks, even though i rarely end up reading any of the suggestions
Over the Garden Wall Vibes - Small Spaces by Katherine Arden, The Clackity by Lora Senf
I don’t care that here in Brazil we are almost in Spring. I’m going to watch ‘book suggestions for fall’ because I’m delusional 🫣
I’m listening to this while walking around in the Rijks museum and it’s such a vibe
For an Over the Garden Wall style book, for me I think of May Bird and the Ever After. It's middle grade but it's so fantastic.
So for the forbidden vampire-human romance, if you don't know it already, I recommend Bloodlines (and the entire series, cuz it is a slowburn) by Richelle Mead. It is the sequel series to Vampire Academy, but easily read without reading that (I didn't and still haven't)
I was about to recommend that! I'm currently re-reading them and it's truly peak slow burn forbidden human-vampire romance
My favorite genre is stories that don't stick to any specific genres. That's why these are helpful!
29:34 not a whole book but washington irving's the legend of sleepy hollow has over the garden wall vibes! perfectly autumnal, spooky but children could still read it, and overall just a great little read.
15:08 carmilla! I started it and it’s super sapphic, gothic and written before Dracula
For the Over the garden wall prompt: Garlic and the Vampire!!!
I love these videos!! Autumn is my favorite season because of the vibes.
Omg so many books to add to my TBR
Over the Garden Wall in book form, to me, is Frog and Toad
Short episodes, visual component, touching on existential themes and being veeery cute and about friendship really 10/10
Also another gothic queer vampire book is A Long Time Dead which is my favorite book I’ve read this year!!!!
A book for Over the Garden Wall vibes is "The Orchard Underground" by Mat Larkin. I adore this book, it is a YA but so gripping and the vibes are immaculate
17:05 the album is so beautiful I really recommend listening to it
Another book that's good to read in a rainstorm or thunderstorm is The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. However, it does have multiple narrators and jumps between two timelines, so if that type of writing confuses you just be aware.
i actually squealed when you recommended book lovers, that was the literal exact book i thought of for that prompt
My university recently added a an english class on vampires!
I listened to The Graveyard Book when I was younger and to this day it’s one of my faves!! I hope you enjoy it!
Read more Terry too! Neil has the darker side but Terry will lighten your mood after that ending
Love your videos Leonie! Your videos have increased my love of reading, even though my preferred form of reading is Audible/Audiobooks. Keep making videos over book stuff
Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere
6:00 I feel that The Spellbook of the lost and found by Moira Fowley-Doyle fits this maybe
Gothic + cottage core vibes: Slewfoot!!
This is my favorite corner of TH-cam
The drawing of Link hugging a mushroom, I'm in love. Also, thank you for the recs!
Fun fact. The Nightmare Before Christmas was only co-directed by Tim Burton. The actual main director was Henry Selick, who also directed Coraline!
Still in love with this concept
Thank you for keeping the prompt on the screen as you talk about the book and showing the book covers! :)
I want to give a big kiss to everyone giving recommendations in the comments y’all are amazing 😭💕
This was awesome I wrote down so many of these recommendations! Fall really is my favorite time of year for reading
To Over the Garden Wall I recommend Small Spaces Ktherine Arden. The story happen in autumn It gives also Coraline vibe.
I blame my hyperfixation on Baldur's Gate 3 and a certain vampire I fell in love with for reigniting my obsession with vampires...
SAME I was hoping for a rec lol
thanks for the awesome recs, I added the book you recommended on my prompt + some others to my tbr! also, feel you on the "nothing can heal me after gos2 except reading more neil gaiman" bc that's exactly what I'm doing
John Connolly* whoops
Additional recommendation for reading with tea: the tea princess chronicles (a trilogy for the main character and a novella with another character). Spice level is low, cozy factor is high, and it’s fantasy.
8:13 oh my gosh, same! I don't think a book has ever made me giggle as much as Jane Eyre did 😅
Heartwarming classic: i would recommend Anne of Green Gables but for a more "grown up" Anne (she is 11 in the first book, that's not for everyone) go for Anne of the Island. She goes to college and there's sweet friendships and romace and she gets philosophical from time to time, which i LOVE.
(Anne of Avonlea is also there but thats more one-room school teacher and small town vibes)
I love Anne of the Island!
I started reading the Anne books this summer. I was a Little House kid but somehow never heard of Anne until much later.
