  • The Ghost Town at Rush, Arkansas, which lies along Rush Creek and soon enters the Buffalo River, resides within the Buffalo River National Park. Rush saw its heyday with thousands of residents just before World War I in its zinc mining production, and the last residents left in the early 60's. Video obtained by my son Nathan and me using elevated and vehicle-mounted cameras, with final production using numerous editing effects. Enjoy! and remember to Like, Share & Subscribe.

Camped and explored there many times. Awesome history going way back even before Europeans were there.

I camped out near Rush just before it was a National Park, giving the land owner a few bucks. He told me that he (and his cows wandering around in the woods) would soon have to move out. I walked around seeing essentially these photos. Thanks for posting.

I used to haul canoes as a kid for the floaters on the Buffalo. Rush was a very different place then. (early 80's). I have been in every mine there, however since then many have been caged shut or demo'd. Sad. Some of those mines were deep and many artifacts remained there in. One even had several old flatbed chevy's still inside. The good old days.

The town was a mining town. The ore was Smithsonite, ZnCO3, zinc carbonate. The nickname was "turkey fat" or just mineral.
The works were underground, you can find them nearby. Mostly caved. There was a 12.000 lb "nugget" recovered there which is now on display in the Smithsonian institute (appropriately enough).
Look for rhe quince bushes gone wild when you're there.

Here's another I made with my son of Rush, I realize that some people won't like the format in 360 tiny planet video. Anyway, here is the link if you wish to view, th-cam.com/video/6IeApkhNHCo/w-d-xo.html

Do you know what happened to the town? It's such a beautiful area, why did it die out? Thank you for sharing your video.

I think the short answer is the economics of zinc mining that dissipated after WWI.

In the early 70's then Governor Bill Clinton and the Arkansas State Legislation initiated a bill to Congress to make the Buffalo River from it's start in Newton and Madison Counties in the NW corner of Arkansas a National River.....Approved by Congress in 1971, the Buffalo River became the first River in the United States of America to become a National River....from it's beginning and for miles and miles down river the Government took 1 mile on each side of the river and displaced any and all from their lives and homes......Rush was one of those fatalities.....I'm 63 and have many friends that were forced to move from their homes of many generations near Boxley and Ponca when they were just kids...one friends home is still standing in the woods but he and his family has never returned to the land they lived on and their ancestors homesteaded.....

Yes, that is true, and thank you for bringing up the point of NP drone restrictions. I did NOT use a drone to create this video. I used a method that I call "elevated video" or a camera attached to the top of a pole, with some scenes captured from the back of my moving truck. That said, I have been a licensed drone pilot since August of 2016.
