Most of the triggers of SJW's are excuses, rather that actual reasons. They've been wanting to do it for a long time, and just needed an excuse. That's the only explanation that accounts for the inconsistency in what they get riled up about.
Be that as it may, his quoting of the pledge 'not to fight for King and Country' omits the fact that those then pledging thought they would be asked to fight the USSR or engage in defence of Empire. When they later signed up, they were fully aware neither was to be the case.

Christopher was a Trot. Douglas is a conservative. They were both brilliant and spoke the truth. Hitchens spoke out against Islamist facists. He spoke against the excesses of the Israelis but on this issue they would have had a great, civilised debate.
@@Wokko1963 I think Christopher Hitchens did a lot of damage as Judeo-Christian traditions are the only way we will save the West. It was Catholicism that kept islamism out because it is the antithesis to it. The secularisation of our society has created a spiritual vacuum and allowed islamism in. I didnt used to believe this but over the years I have realised that it is only by the West going back to those Judeo-Christian roots that we will repel evil because we will prioritise our own traditions.

I’m sure Douglas Murray and Christopher Hitchens would have disagreed on many things, but it would their debates would have been incredible.
Hitchens’ greatest failing was his support of the Iraq war, despite his loathing for Bush and Blair. But he was absolutely right about Islamo-facism. Decades ahead of his time. After the events of October 7, I have no doubt Hitchens would have railed against Hamas in the most devastating way.
Zizek, Hitchens, Murray, Buckley, Bronowski, Clarke (Kenneth), Hughes (Robert), Greer, Paglia, Wilson (Harold), Foote, Kinnock, Cronkite, Moore (Patrick), et al. They don’t make them like that anymore.

As a Canadian I am deeply ashamed of the Liberal response to the UNWRA Scandal and Israel as a whole. A majority of Canadians feel this way.
I sincerely hope that you are right about Canadians. My experience and observations here in Canada tell me a different story. Canada has gone through a profound cultural and political shift over the last 55 years. The entire country has been moved politically to the left to the point that if the Conservative Party of Canada wants to be elected, it has to cater to the "swing voters" and hence follow the leftist playbook. Most Canadian Institutions have been captured in one form or another by the " woke" identitarian ideology. Most Canadians do not recognize it as an ideology because for at least 3 generations it has been sold to them as what it means to be a good Canadian. It is now at the heart of the Canadian identity.

I don’t observe Judaism, and I do not believe in the claims of the Torah. However, my father was born of Ashkenazi Jewish parents, themselves who were first generation immigrants fleeing the long hatred in Europe. If I, with my non-faith, but DNA, was time-travelled to Germany in the 1930s, I would be murdered in some hellish camp. If those still ruling Gaza gained supremacy over any patch of land that I was in, I would be murdered. Don't make the critical error of thinking this guy in zebra socks is anywhere close to being in the same league as Murray. Their opinions are NOT of equal value, which is not a criticism of zebra socks man. Murray is not only highly academically educated, he's also the rare modern journalist who puts his physical self into the circumstances upon which reports & comments. He EXPERIENCES it, doesn't just observe and judge from the outside.... and his criticisms of Western "rights" (i.e. that we're ENTITLED to life, freedom, respect, comfort, money, etc etc) are a dead on bullseye. The West has become WEAK because (except for the military), the majority no longer takes action in support of what it claims to value. Dr. Peterson is not as informed on the Mideast as Murray just as Douglas isn't as conversant on psychological matters as Peterson. Both can still respect the other's point of view.

Will there ever come a time when young people ask, why is it more conservatives are more informed and intelligent than those on the left? That’s a contrast so obvious today but is never discussed.
I could listen to Douglas Murray all day. He's absolutely brilliant.
I am just an ordinary person (atheist) & rack my brains almost on a daily basis as to how we have come to be where we are in our supposed democratic western civilisations where everything is now topsy turvey & one of the conclusions I have come to is firstly is, we have taken our democracy for granted to the point of complacency as we see in the UK by the numbers of people that don't vote. Israel is one of the few countries that has not. As a result of our complacency we have allowed ourselves to be bullied & controlled by many who wish us harm and so now we are afraid to say or act through fear. We were warned many times by, now often unjustly demonised individuals, but chose to ignore those warnings because we thought we were untouchable and I include myself in that apathy. Now we have a problem because we have allowed our own politicians to pass laws, through the back door, that have harmed our various democacies and so have an uphill battle and only the brave, people like Douglas Murray, are the ones who are putting themselves in the line of fire and trying to stop the rot. The left, even far left, have some serious thinking to do because they seem to think they will somehow be immune from their own actions, involvement & responsibility because they were driven by hate of those who had different views or opinions to themselves. Things can only change when they realise what they have done and that by destroying, or trying to destroy their opponents they have destroyed themselves and their future generations.
