    So a small point of note, the Gamecube version actually did up the graphics on the animals a bit. If you look closely at the gamecube version, all the cubes are beveled compared to just straight cubes in the n64 version.

    I was super fortunate to grow up with the gamecube game. My mom plucked it out of a bargain bin, since she's awesome and would buy me random games from time to time. She got it because the cover art looked cute to her. It quickly became one of my favorite games and I still own my complete copy to this day. I even collect the little figures they released in japan way back when. I almost have a complete collection too!

      Doubt it. The difference is that 64DD uses magnetic disks as opposed to standard carts. The disks corrode much, much faster than carts. If they are found I'll be amazed if they are still functioning properly.

    @classiccustoms2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    Man, it's insane how different things could have been for the Gamecube if the 64DD had been successful. I mean, it seems like the Gamecube got a lot of the N64's "sloppy seconds," even though games like this and Doshin (and Animal Crossing) are fairly well received. There's also Dinosaur Planet.

      pc gaming and the dreamcast really lit fire under nintendo and sony's ass to improve their stuff. and they did - but they weren't poised to compete with the 'next gen' the dreamcast usherd in. with how quickly tech was moving they just tried to bide their time and out-next-gen the dreamcast. and they did, but it left the weird late n64/early ps2 era jump in production value because a lot of that mid-generational improvement on the dreamcast and 64dd basically never saw the light of day or stayed in the cooker until getting a gamecube/xbox release years later. heck, i think the first halo probably even falls into that category.

      Luigi's Mansion also started development on the N64 before it even became a Mario game eventually, although it was moved to the GC more due to the project being at odds with the N64's technical limitations, especially in regards to lighting and particle effects (important for creating the proper atmosphere for a horror game).

      The hallmarks of an ATLUS published title, at least at the time. Nintendo had no intention of releasing it outside Japan, so ATLUS did it instead.
      And, of course, ATLUS did as ATLUS does and made a relatively small number of copies.

    • @kazoorion7993
      @kazoorion7993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shiftfire4511 Seems that, with the exception of Demon's Souls, Atlus really sucked as localizing/publishing games back in the day, which could explain why they are so difficulty to find nowadays due to how rare and expensive they are.
      I still thank them for at least trying, though, otherwise many games would have never come in America.

    • @shiftfire4511
      @shiftfire4511 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kazoorion7993 Nah, Atlus was always low-balled it. They took great, but fairly obscure games that had no guarantee of selling well, localize it, and then sell it in limited quantities.

    Would it be possible to get it working as a repro? At least maybe an ever drive?

    Nintendo may have moved it over to Gamecube so they could put it on cheap discs instead of expensive cartridges. They probably knew from the beginning it wasn't going to be a smash hit, so they may as well wait and up their profit margins on the few copies it would sell.

    I remember seeing this game countless times in magazines here in the UK and like many N64 games it seemed to be in development limbo. Probably never helped that it was planned for the 64DD in the first place and in all honesty since it was an early Gamecube game I can see why it was over looked since it looked outdated even for late N64 standards.

    I'm not sure if u would see my comment as a response so I'm reposting it. .
    @hard4games did you notice that the monkeys ears turn from circular speakers for stereo and mono, but then turn to each side of the Dolby digit logo for the surround sound. Take the ears, and put them together.... Boom Dolby digital logo.

    Is there any other version of this game? I vividly remember playing it on my computer many years ago.

    Seeing this forgotten game getting some well deserved spotlight , another game comes to be from GCN but I just cant remember the name of it...maybe somone can spot it. I remember bits of the cover: It is in a wasteland/desert and theres a sign with some monkey-like/urangutan creature on it I believe. Anyone?
