Thanks for the good tips. One tip of mine is also simple. Sometimes when boxes are delivered, they are really thick cardboard. You can protect the cardboard by covering the surface with packing tape and make it waterproof. That works as well as Masonite. I like the idea of the Masterson palette boxes, but I have such a problem with getting the lids on after a painting session....they never seem to line up.
On the Masterson palette box try vaseline on the rim of the box. Some of my students have had great success with getting the lid off and on by using vaseline.

The masters simply treated their wood pallet with linseed oil, leaving it to harden in the sun for a few weeks, then the hardened oil is completely compatible, and also very durable.

Amazing! I have plenty of tracing paper and never even thought to use it as a palette. You solved my problem and saved me $! Cool!
