...Un Basso Cantante par excellence! Perfect balance over all registers, you could see and hear his philanthropy. Where others used pure force, Franz Crass always demonstrated „Cantare“. From Bach and Händel to Mozart, Strauss, Verdi and Wagner, it always was a pure pleasure listening to him. RIP
Vielen Dank STEFANLOEHRWUERZBURG; this is , to say the least, a dream come true; listen to my FAVORITE BASS singing this repertoire THANKSSSS......It's a pity that we don't have too many recordings, we quite a lot, but not the quantity HE deserves.......ETERNAL PEACE FOR YOU FRANZ CRASS
The greatest German bass of the 1960’s & into the 70’s. Such a warm & beautiful sound. Some other Sarastros have darker timbre but Crass was more than adequate here besides having a more gorgeous sound than any of them until Kurt Moll came along. I have no way of knowing how he was as an actor but vocally here he seems to have mastered Verdi, not to mention Bach, Mozart, & Wagner. I have yet to check him out on Lieder but I remain optimistic. As far as fine low notes (and a remarkably easy top voice) are concerned he like Pinza surprises with solid low Ds as Osman which one can still hear on You Tube I believe.
amazing voice and great rendition of the Verdi Filippo II. Actually we cannot judge his properly but I bet his voice was huge in the theatre, sounds very projected and high in position.
He had some deep notes but this man is a baritone. Apart from phrasing of the words, fantastic - actually, amazing voice. (Then I heard him sing Sarastro and there he sounds like a bass.)

The photo beginning at 2:30 shows an astounding lineup of basses. I'm able to identify all but the one in the green suit. Can anybody name him?
Great voice. RIP

Nonsense! He was a basso cantante par excellence, never a baritone.
bariton.......
