The PERFECT Piano Hands | Can I Play Piano With Small Hands? This gets personal...

  • In this video, I am looking at different types of hands and what benefits and qualities each one has. I share a bit of my story, few personal experiences, and get to the conclusion of the important characteristics your hands and fingers need to have and what makes the perfect hands for piano. Which type of hands do you have?
At the end of this video, you can see me play an excerpt from Liszt's Après une lecture du Dante - Fantasia quasi Sonata, S158c. An exciting, beautiful, and sometimes scary piece inspired by Dante Alighieri's 'Divine Comedy'

I have teeny tiny hands. I am 4'11" and my handspan is just under 7 inches, making them barely able to reach an octave.
However, I've been playing piano for over 20 years and I don't plan on stopping :) Hungarian Rhapsody is challenging for me, but I can play Jeux D'eau without too much difficulty.

...or maybe the piano keyboard could be available in multiple sizes like many other instruments can. Keyboards used to come in various sizes before they were standardized around famous concert pianists' hands of the time, which at the time were mostly men (still are). Each key being a little smaller leads to a bigger difference when playing a block chord over a larger number of keys. The Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards is a group pushing manufacturers to make keyboards with narrower keys to be ergonomic for more people, in particular, keyboards with a 5.5-in octave or 6-in octave (compared to the standard 6.5-in octave). More ergonomic piano keyboards means less chance of injury for everyone.

The proof is in the playing. Fact: Alicia de Lorocha performed the Rach 3, and listen to the huge volume of sound she achieves with the Goyescas. Barenboim performed all the Beethoven sonatas as well as a large repertoire. And I doubt Argerich has enormous hands, yet look at what she does.

Thank you for this video! You address very important issues, not just for musicians but all people, because it's almost universal for us to doubt our physical capabilities. THE DEMONS OF DOUBT. When I first played piano in my teen years my idol was Arthur Rubenstein. I read that he had incredible reach and his little finger nearly as long as his fourth. Since I had short fifth fingers I immediately began doubting myself. I recently began playing again after decades. I realize now that not even Chopin and Liszt had "perfect" hands, but they had brilliant technique. Barenboim and Josef Hofmann have/had small hands. Most female pianists have smaller hands than I. I no longer look for excuses that can be used to hold myself back.

I have fairly small hands for a pianist (I can quite comfortably reach a 9th), but I’m also not the tallest (164cm). But my hands is very stretchy, so I found that I can still play whatever I want. It‘s about so much more than just hand size.

Unfortunately, I think for the standard piano size (DS6.5), you gotta have 8 inch span to be comfortable or very very flexible. getting DS5.5 for myself this weekend, so I'm super excited about it. I also put in DS5.5 digital keyboard waiting list. hopefully this hand size thing no longer become an issue in the near future for everyone.

I’ve always felt like my hands were just too small for most Rachmaninoff pieces cause I can just barely reach a ninth and there are tons of tenths in Rachmaninoff and even some twelfths. And with some composers, I feel like arpeggiation, breaking the chord is not the best solution cause I don’t know, it just doesn’t sound right. Like when I get a tenth in a chord in Beethoven, I can’t reach that tenth, but I feel like arpeggiating it is just wrong, so I omit the tenth and add the octave instead and I barely notice the change. With Rachmaninoff, I’ve felt like I can’t even do that though, so I’ve felt like I’m basically restricted to those few pieces that don’t have tenths like the G minor prelude.
Liszt, I feel like arpeggiating the chord will just add to the already existing virtuosity. Beethoven, I feel like the sounding of notes at the same time is more important than having the tenth, so I omit the tenth and add the octave. Rachmaninoff, I felt like whatever I do for the tenths, it’s not going to sound right. But now that you told me that Rachmaninoff himself arpeggiated those chords, I’m not as worried about not being able to play most Rachmaninoff repertoire because of my reach.

It's very interesting to watch (or hear) top-level pianists perform the intro to Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto. Rubinstein (audio only) breaks the left hand chord with that 10th stretch (F-A). It's very quick and subtle, but it's definitely a broken chord. th-cam.com/video/u9QLiefnoDE/w-d-xo.html. Yuja Wang either drops the bottom F or breaks the chord. th-cam.com/video/NsqXCO0ADwM/w-d-xo.html. Helene Grimaud (th-cam.com/video/1GLSHtDzg5o/w-d-xo.html) clearly breaks the chord as does Wael Farouk th-cam.com/video/b-k45PyB8-0/w-d-xo.html. Anna Fedorova plays the whole chord, but her finger catches a bit of the neighbor G when she plays the F th-cam.com/video/rEGOihjqO9w/w-d-xo.html. Lang Lang plays to whole chord. th-cam.com/video/e-x01ddG0x4/w-d-xo.html. Of all of these, I actually prefer the sound of the broken chord myself.

Pianist here - hand size isn't what bothers me. While my hands are average in size, my thumbs are very short. This means when I play arpeggios very fast, or any runs that have lots of thumb tucks (basically all runs, let's face it) I can never each the speed of other pianist my short thumbs require so much wrist turning to connect notes.
Palm size is another issue. I have a large palm and short fingers - I see pianists with small palm and long fingers, and improve at a much faster rate because of it. Sorry, but a small palm and long fingers is just plain better than the other way around when it comes to piano

    • @EvgenyGenchev

Sorry to hear you feel this way. I am someone who's palm is also bigger than the fingers. Some of my favourite pianists have similar hand structure too. I think it has many advantages and although I would have found it super useful to ALSO have at least half a centimetre longer fingers, I have learned to be happy with what I have and make use of it to the best of my ability.

Your hands seem slightly above average for a male and yet your family thinks they're too small for you to get to the top! Or you know...piano makers could make different sized keyboards. PASK, pianists first alternatively sized keyboards is a great resource. They advocate for piano makers to provide ds 5.5 keyboards.

the real piano black pill is thick fingers. My father literally can't fit his finger between two black keys without pressing one of them. That's MUCH worse than not being able to hit 10th.
