Your ability to tell the story of real and living beings in a world separate from ours is incredible. These are people. If they revealed themselves to have sentience in regards to us i would not be surprised. Also stumbler deserves headpats
I feel like this is happening because people are so used to mascot horror games being rip-offs of/heavily inspired by FNaF, so they're applying the FNaF logic of "character/item/color is symbolic of a person" to Bucky.
So what you’re telling me is that? Bucky, the beaver had a Undertale situation. Where The players mischaracterized multiple characters and missed the point about how it’s their fault not Cara not flowery, *it’s their fault that all of this happened.*
tfw you gaslight a humanly flawed main character into committing atrocities and murdering their love ones as they're the monster of the story and not yourself for the consequences of the player's own actions. This isn't the lack media literacy, this is the lack of media cognition.
from what i seen of the game when it came out, i mostly thought the story was just the lead developer's decent to madness and the game was an extension of that madness, i never even realized that bucky was his own being and not just a reflection of the dev and his insecurities and a bystander to the player, i didnt even know the murders were real from my 1st impression, so learning more about that what bucky is saying is tied to himself as the beaver/man and not the idea was eye opening, and made me further appreciate the clever and subtle writing that i originally missed
you know what, better thoughts on this video but the way most of the internet demonizes bucky does seem to show how much the internet demonizes mentally ill people, like bucky does certainly have the POTENTIAL to do bad stuff under pressure, but in reality he truly never did anything aside from getting mad at you for ignoring his requests to bring him back to safety to his friends so he wont have to have to face what somebody using his skin did, he genuinely does not deserve to be demonized like this at all all he did was crack under pressure in a scenario that nearly everyone would ALSO crack he deserves way better treatment
I've come to wonder if that mentality comes from fear - fear of what it would mean for _their_ stability. If someone _else_ could do something *_Really Bad_* as a result of other people's actions... then how do you know that couldn't happen to you? It challenges the hope that you have reasonable ability to _choose_ no matter the circumstance. This is not to say the opposite - that we can't really hold anyone account for their actions - but to focus in on the uncomfortable grey that's there.
@@immxmax And yet some people idolize Walter White from Breaking Bad. Probably also out of fear for their stability, but coping with it by telling themselves "Hey, at least if I were to crack under pressure, I would be a cool badass." That is still equally as pathetic. And there are probably billions of other more pathetic aspects of how people can avoid the fear for their own stability.
@@StoryTeller796 I always remind myself that everyone is equally capable of great good and great evil. I don’t exclude myself from that. Certainly, even the thought of losing yourself or not being able to truly predict how you’ll react to a situation is frightening, but I feel like that fear leads to a sort of…pridefulness, I suppose…? And that pride keeps people from accepting that they are even capable of being “that way” in the first place.
It's also worth noting that he sees the player as his friend. Because of course, the mascot is gonna act like everyone in his friend and the video game version has no reason for it to be an act. But that means it's his friend ignoring his requests for safety. It's his friend pushing him to go into dangerous environments. Yeah no shit he'd be mad eventually Plus it's also worth considering that the in universe dev was trying to create a general feeling of shame to everyone who played because he was angry himself. Even if it caught random strays he wanted to make people feel like they're bad people to hopefully reflect poorly on the CEO. And the video game character Bucky can't control what people intended outside of him. I really do just feel sad for him honestly. There's no reason to think he's evil.
Did I almost cry at the analysis of Bucky’s relationship with Walter despite not being able to play the game (not having Steam)? Yes. This video just solidified my love of Bucky and he’s now my favorite. I also completely forgot about Hotel 09 until watching this
I’ve always wondered why Brandon killed the other actors, and your video is the only one I’ve seen that really got to the core of it all. Awesome work I also didn’t even know that these characters had more depth than what was presented so thank you for shining a light on Bucky as a person.
Ok, so its basically like Kris Deltarune and the Soul/Players relationship. Funny enough, people for the longest time thought they were evil just for doing something like Bucky, and oh, idk.... REFUSING THE BEING PUPPETING THEM AND TAKING CONTROL OF THEIR BODY. I see alot of things in common about them, like how Bucky is disturbed with these lore side quests the player is intrigued by, Kris is the same with the secrwt bosses.
Reminds me of this one clip of an Easter egg from a video I can’t remember the name of and one guy is arguing about going outside. The other guy tells him “it’s dangerous out there!” The other guy gets really melodramatic and says “don’t you understand? it’s dangerous in here too” and both of the characters slowly turn their heads towards you. This game looked a bit older too so it’s not a new idea that characters are in your hands when you play a game. That’s why I could never choose any mean dialogues in video games
This is 10000% THE best Shipwrecked 64 analysis I’ve seen! Looking into the complex yet amazing narrative of Shipwrecked isn’t an easy task, but you did incredible with explaining Bucky’s character! I really hope that this video performs spectacularly because you absolutely deserve it! Now let’s hope that people stop making Bucky some evil killer from now on LOL
Really great analysis here! Can genuinely say I learned a lot more about Shipwrecked and the characters within than I already knew. I also really liked when Stumbler was on screen ❤ Subbed!
49:55 OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD I COMPLETLY AGREE WITH YOU I see this mentality everywhere these days and it gets so bothersome when people apply it to characters who aren't as simple as "good" or "evil" and genuinely dee characters who are flawed and make several bad choices but aren't gonna kill anyone and I hate it.
BUCKY JUST WANTED TO GO HOME AND THAT'S NOT A CRIME!!!!!! i care for him so much it's not his fault someone decided to Do Bad Things in a suit that looks like him edit: okay now that i've watched more of the video i wanted to add that Rex and Bucky's relationship make me want to eat rocks (/pos). as a guy who makes ocs i get where Rex is coming from, man. one of my guys, Haji, is just everything i worry about and hate about shoved onto a person. i put him in a gang because i'm willingly walking into the culinary industry (which is an absolute NIGHTMARE). he's an insecure trans man because i am too. he's scared of being profiled because of it because i am too. i really want to know how Haji would react to all this if he was some kinda alive. i want to know if he would hate me too. i couldn't blame him. i wonder if Starling!Rex knows Bucky hates him. i wonder if he feels at all bad about it now that Bucky's alive.
Sometimes I imagine my characters couldn’t hate me, instead would thank me and take me under their wing. For 7 years these guys have been my hyper fixation and once, they used to have a lot of my not great qualities, but they now have grown to be the best versions of themselves! I mean,,, yeah,,,,, I did kill one, revive him and mentally scarred his friends but, he’s chill about it now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ without me they would never have existed, they better be grateful smh
nothing is ever "not that deep", people just dont fully pay attention or they feel embarrassed to care this analysis is so full of care i lov it!!!!! \(^ヮ^)/
I also feel like people who tell others they're "reaching" or "its not that deep" without any evidence, are generally ignorant to the themes the work of fiction is trying to tell or at worst, refuse to acknowledge the themes because they fear they'll apply to them. Also in general, it discourages people from expressing their unique interpretations of a fictional work.
I'm glad I quit watching game theory years ago. From the multiple playthroughs and investigation videos i've watched of shipwrecked 64, I got the general idea that Bucky and Brandon were two entirely separate but tragically connected entities- neither of them wanted this. Neither of them asked for this. However; this video did let me in on some things I very much missed. The true nuances of Bucky's character, the deeper undertones of his relationships with Giovanni and Walter went completely over my head, and watching this made Shipwrecked hit even harder for me than it had before. 10/10 video, you deserve so much more than you have right now
Why? Most of Game Theory’s theories are just that. Theories. The entire point of their little catchphrase, or whatever it’s called, “that’s just a theory, a game theory!” is to remind you that basically everything in the video is just for fun. You aren’t meant to take them seriously.
@@treehouseoffun1242 what kind of theorist where they failed to research throughly and making assumptions of every mascot character is the evil mastermind who want to eat your brain? thats the level of tin foiled hat
8 วันที่ผ่านมา +19
@@treehouseoffun1242 Its not about taking the silly theories seriously or not, its about the Game Theory team getting pretty easy to parse things wrong cause the content machine can't stop for quality.
8 วันที่ผ่านมา +13
@@treehouseoffun1242 there is not even any kind of "theory" in Game Theory's Shipwrecked video. It's just them building the puzzle out for you, without any specific new insight or new ideas. (Something that fair enought to them, they do quite a lot on the FNAF theories. despite the anger of some fans)
And they’ve also gotten many things right as well. Acting as if they’re all bad because of their wrong theories is incredibly naive. Of course they’re not going to be right all the time but they aren’t wrong all the time either. They’re people and they make mistakes, but look beyond those mistakes as well. Now if they got way, way more theories wrong and also acted as if they were right, then I can understand the dislike op has for them.
There an interesting bit of characterisation that when Olivia confront him about why he hates bucky so much, Giovanni can`t really muster a reason beyond some shallow and generic excuses. I get a feeling he doesn`t really understand himself why he hold such a grudge toward Bucky and why would he? How could he ever fathom that the explanation for his hate was that he was specifically created to torment him? how would he even react to the knowledge that the pure vitriolic hate he feels toward bucky isnt truly his own?
had a pointing at the screen moment when the time signature of waltz got brought up, that's genuinely my favorite part of the piece. good video. wild that people have misinterpreted this character that badly when it's really clear what's going on with him if you just listen to him.
honestly i just want people to AU nice, little cheerful cartoons where these goobers don't have to deal with rex or anything involving braodside. they suffered so much :(
50:22 Hey... that reminds me of another character from a popular indie game that has also been placed in both categories (Curly from Mouthwashing). But in all seriousness, I didn't think that most of the fans actually think that Bucky is the killer and the villain of the game when they see Brandon during the murders. It leaves me with the same bitter taste of people saying that Wally is the true bad guy of Welcome Home when we barely reached the end of the prologue. And I'll be very disappointed if people also mischaracterized Inspeckta from Great God Grove and doing a disservice to the ending. Well that's my 2 cents on the topic.
Honestly I'm really glad you made this video, I don't understand Shipwrecked 64 half as much as I should, but the scenes in which Bucky talks directly to the player, begging them to stop, to turn back, and then finally... to end him. Those always stuck with me, and I'm so glad to see I wasn't the only one to see that. Edit: after watching the whole video, I just wanna say how obvious it is that you care for the character of Bucky and how much you've added to my own appreciation of the lil dude. Truly a great and complex character, even more complex then I gave him credit for.
31:45 TWO PEOPLE??? TWO????? I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST PIPSQUEAK WHO THE HELL WAS THE OTHER GUY???????? Seriously though, this is an amazing video! I'm so thankful people are discussing the full intricacies of bucky and just the cast in general.
Bro, i cant even begin to describe how happy this video made me. You are the sole reason i got into this game like months ago because i saw your fanart on tumblr and was like "huh, looks neat! I should check it out" and then proceed to be blasted with a new hyperfixation. Like Oh My Goooood the connection between how each death is shown and the realationships bucky has the with the people in question bro i didnt think of that your brain is so beautiful and true. 10/10 video, i am going to make my friends play shipwrecked 64. Also when you were talking about how "Normal" you are about Bucky and Walters relationships i literally started to giggle to myself, like- dude, ive seen your art- (and your fics), *I know how normal you are about them* shhsgagagshsgsgsggs
GREAT VID. As someone who has identity/dissociative issues and likes those themes in fiction, I picked up on the duality/mirror themes in Shipwrecked REAL QUICK. So it might be bias, but it shocked me that among the "picking apart and dissecting the game" discussions, I've never really seen it be brought up! (But then again, I'm not sure I'm wanting to see discussions of Bucky's Evil Side or what have you lmao) It's something that I think is such rich territory for media that involves different iterations of a character, and god does Shipwrecked prove it. The themes this game hones in on and its execution is fantastic, but I think people are missing out on the additional (in plain text!) layer of: A character who's a stranger in their own skin, subject to how others perceive them, how they get treated because of that perception, and eventually end up playing into it (intentionally or not) because they were "always that way," weren't they? Never mind when you're a franchise character, so in the end it "is" you! Super appreciate you taking the time to making this video! You've done a good job breaking down this character and his circumstances, and it's just well put together video all around! The information about Bucky and his sibling relationship with Walter is going to make me bury myself in the sand!
I think this video has genuinely opened my eyes to Shipwrecked64. I watched the Night Mind video way back when and thought it was neat but never thought much about it afterwards (didn’t help that the clickbait made it out like every mascot horror ever). However seeing that Bucky is this self aware character that isn’t a murder nor a “uwu cinnamon roll” but this extremely fleshed out and engaging character is so refreshing. Probably the best video I’ve ever watched on the topic! I now really want to start looking into Shipwreaked64 more now!
Me but with gtlive. The game didnt seem that interesting to me. Was the sudden gore with Giovanni cool? Yeah i loved seeing a mascot horror game not be squeaky clean for once. But it very quickly felt like it became gore for gore's sake, and the hard to understand voice things (the NATO alphabet one was insane) made me quickly lose interest. Seeing this game going way deeper than i expected is nice, and kinda weird that this is the second time it has happend, the other game being mouthwashing, which i didnt even watch 15 minutes of when i first saw it
Something I found is that N64 inspired horror games are usually pretty good Crow 64, the multiple animal crossing styled horror games, kitty kart 64 Of course none of them are outstanding but theyre still miles better than what the typical mascot horror
holy fuck i was always confused after watching "explanation videos", it never quite made sense, this is SO GOOD!!!!! i feel like i've just made a grand discovery despite the fact that i've just been listening to a youtube video for an hour i fucking love this character
ngl this video made me realize just how much stuff i've been missing out on when it comes to this game and how little i really know about it i thought the thumbnails were just silly cuz i feel like the separation between brandan and bucky the character was pretty spelled out lol but oh my god i am missing so much bucky lore thank you for the enlightenment
God this was just... You friggin knocked it out of the park with this video, and those stills were really great, loved the style. I never thought I'd get so emotional over a low poly Beaver and his mentally ill pirate crew. Also the whole bit with Walter and autism spoke to me on a personal level.
I never played Shipwrecked 64, so all the information I know about it is from TH-cam videos. But this is the first video I saw that focuses the cartoon characters themselves, and showed me a lot of knowledge I never seen before (such as Bucky's and Walter's relationship). On one hand I'm glad this video was made, but on the otherhand I am disappointed that I haven't seen other folks shine more light on this side of Sw64's story.
Finally my favorite characters, the depressed beaver and the paranoid mutant furry have been done justice! Thank you for your service Grapejuice, for saying that Bucky is a complex character with a lots of depth. My poor boy can't escape the reminders of the murders and his undeserved downfall. As well as for Brandon, while we know very little about him, and he did kill his coworkers, he's also victim in this situation. A big thing I've noticed with Shipwrecked and the wider Broadside universe, is the constant themes of narrative parallels/mirrors. Each event and character has their own parallel, in both the game world and the real world. Overall this is a great video! Amazing top tier quality stuff 👌👌👌👌
Back when I watched analysis videos on Shipwrecked 64 I never put much attention to this side of the narrative. Definitely made me appreciate the game a lot more.
Wait... people thought Bucky and Brandon were the same? I always seperated the Cartoon version of the Characters to the Real possessed or converted mascot.
This video has revealed a lot to me about shipwreck. Holy cow thank you! Bucky has and always will be one of my favorite characters in indie game history! I never saw him as evil, yet I knew he wasn't some pure soul either, in the best way put. He is human. Or more so, he is beaver. XD
people thought Bucky is evil? huh, didn't know, though I do kind of associate the phrase "Evil Bucky" with Brandon (I only have the Shipwrecked 64 context thanks to pappo)
You really did a fantastic job doing analysis on these fuzzy emotional shipwrecks, Grape. I love how much thought Squeaks put into their character and I really enjoyed how you brought it all to light. Awesome job!!!
...This was a metanarrative I wasn't aware of. Holy fucking shit. Shipwrecked 64 is an incredible game, and it deserves more attention than it currently has.
LIke I saw Bucky telling us to stop going deeper, and I thought that was natural, for someone not wanting to see The Horrors. But it never hit me how DEEPLY it actually affected Bucky.
This is an awesome video! I love your analysis into Bucky and what he does for the story. Your point that his having an actual character sets him apart from characters in the mascot horror subgenre is sticking with me. Maybe you can argue the game explores the horror of being a mascot, of being a symbol given flesh. Broadside Animations depends on him as a mascot just as his friends depend on him for their well-being/survival, projecting their own frustrations or feelings onto him. Being a mascot means you embody something so much larger than yourself, some ideas and histories that you may or may not find acceptable. You are a tool to be used. You are a narrative device. The way the game makes you complicit in this is so, so interesting and adds to the horror. You’ve given me much to think about and I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work!
You are so correct and real for this and I genuinely feel like somewhere down the line with these horror games people like to jump and ASSUME the "typical" roles of mascot horror, not wanting to really dig into more complex characters. There's an automatic snap that makes a lotta peoples brains go "okay so this is the good guy and this is the bad guy-" and I can't help but look at this and remember how the Undertale fandom severely mischaracterized someone like Chara. It kinda made me wanna shrivel up like a raisin imngl
I have never actually looked into the characters, because I was too busy trying to figure the lore out, but this has opened my eyes to how complex and realistic the characters are, especially Bucky. Squeak D Corgeh is an amazing writer and I hope that they do more projects
you have really upped bucky on my favorite character list for this game all bc of this video. stumbler's still my favorite, but bucky is a really close second. excellently done!
(As of the original comment, I haven't finished watching the video and points may be subject to change) Seeing Bucky's mascot costume murdering someone and your talk of how people demonize him on the internet got me thinking of another mascot horror franchise, which I think explains why Bucky is commonly perceived the way he is. In Five Nights At Freddy's, fans- or even casual viewers of the franchise- typically connect The Yellow Rabbit costume to William Afton. The Yellow Rabbit ("Springbonnie" before the movie dropped) was made to be a friendly, welcoming character who's image is now permanently tainted because it just so happens to be the suit Afton used to carry out his murders. It was created with kind & simple intentions, but (much like the games itself portray it as) is reduced to a ruined husk being controlled by a despicable man. The same might be the case with Bucky, though in a less fictional manner. People see a mascot suit in his image doing terrible things, and that in turn makes them draw the same connection to the actual character- even if he's completely innocent in that regard. It's only natural to think of someone as "evil" or "cruel" if you see their image used to carry out horrific acts, which in turn taints their true identity as that's all people will remember them by- the actions someone else committed using their face as a scapegoat.
giovanni and rex really were just in it for the love of the game huh this is such a spectacular analysis on this character oh my GOD i might be dragged back into the hyperfixation, i genuinely hope to see more analyses from you!
Imagine villainizing a depressed cartoon beaver who gets rightfully angry at his creator who brutally unalives him in all his appearances while the players of his game beats his friends (one of which is his brother) & shows little regard to the danger he's in and his want to go home while a mentally ill individual dresses up as him & harms people. #JusticeForBucky
The "game theory misunderstands protagonists (potentially on purpose) to make clickbait about how secretly evil they are" trend will never end. Mario, Luigi, Phoenix Wright, Princess Peach, Mega Man, Kirby, Dory from finding nemo, po from kung fu panda, it never ends.
They also did it with Rambley the racoon from Indigo Park, despite prior to GT's video the creator blatantly stated that Rambley isn't evil nor will he become the main bad guy
@okay_kaboomer see, the only possibility is that the game's developers lied and that they accidentally made the main mascot of the franchise a psychopath through bad writing. /s Only Disney's allowed to do that, for the record.
Ok but to be fair on the Mario one. For a long ass time Mario was kinda. Bad to Luigi for no apparent reason and it wasn't even like light hearted brother mockery like no bro was actually being a bitch to his brother. I'm glad Nintendo is officially like fixing that up to where their relationship ISN'T as toxic as it was. With Mario always, ALWAYS leaving Luigi behind or genuinely being petty when Luigi succeeded
Phoenix Wright?! BRO HOWWWW??? You are literally reading that man’s inner dialogue through the whole series? 😭 phoenix is just a dude, just a broke bisexual lawyer who wants to believe in his clients innocence! 🗣️🙏🏼
If I had a nickel for every time I saw an anthropomorphic cartoony rabbit with no arms in a horror game... I'd have two nickels, which is strange because it happened twice right? (Oswald In FNaTI and Stumbler)
Im kinda shocked so many people mischaracterized him so bad, like I thought it was obvious how complexed him and the story was. Like everyone is technically capable of murder if driven to that circumstance. I love Bucky so much I think he's such an interesting little guy.
hey this video is awesome! to be honest as someone who has only engaged with shipwrecked 64 video essays without ever diving deeper, i'm (very pleasantly) surprised by just how much depth there is to these characters! i absolutely love to see this, it's awesome and hearing you talk about it all really endeared me to them! i'm invested in seeing any followups squeaks dcorgeh does in the future :)
Oh my gosh. We need more Shipwrecked 64 videos like this. I swear there will always be something about this game that I don’t know. Oh my gosh. This video was literally amazing. I don’t even know what to say.
yknow, i clicked on this expecting it to be some nice bg noise n perhaps a dive into the dissonance of modern clickbait covering horror mdia that winds up ignoring the truth abt the characters n their development, but youve totally captivated me with all you had to say n convinced me to look at shipwrecked64 through a new lens. thank you for this, it is seriously harrowing to think about the existential horror of being a sentient character going through all the horrific conditions bucky did, remembering every single thing done in his image. will probably continue to think about this n its implications for a long while..
I did not notice that people would not be able to separate the mascot actor guy (Brandon Lestor) from Bucky Beaver. Like Bucky is just a silly nice guy who wants to go home and we are forcing him to watch someone hurt people using his name and likeness. Poor baby. Let him save his friends and go home. Edit: WALTZ DNASJDKAJKDNJKDN im going to go feral. also i was legit like "wdym this is 3/4-- wait somethign is wrong."
This video has convinced me to be a Bucky fan. Fr phenomenal work on this video cuz it does look at the series from the perspective of the characters which we normally don't do or consider in the internet's hunts for lore as of late.
Game Theory has a permanent bad habit of just making whichever mascot of the thing it is the antagonist of their thumbnails, regardless of the actual lore.
This is seriously how it goes - Game Theory Thumbnail - It's about some game called "Fluffkins mconlygoodcharacter and the crazy wacky murders he didn't commit" - It's actually about that - Insert Fluffkins Mconlygoodcharacter on the thumbnail in some spooky scary matter - DO NOT TRUST HIM / KILLER? - 10 gorillion views.
THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE, THANK YOU FOR PUTTING EVERYTHING IVE BEEN STEWING OVER FOR MONTHS NOW INTO WORDS I COULD NEVER HAVE THIS IS FANTASTIC, THANK GOD SOMEONE FINIALLY MADE A VIDEO ABOUT BUCKYS MISSCHARACTERISATION GOOD LORD, OUR BOY JUST WANTED TO GO HOME AND WE SOME SADISTIC OMNIPITENT FORCE PUSHES HIM INTO SEEING SUCH HORRIBLE THINGS NEGLECTING HIS OWN LIFE, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND THE DIFFRENCES BETWEEN WHAT HAPPENED IN THE "realtiy" OF SHIPWRECKED AND THIS GAME/CHARACTER WORLD
Considering the implications of what a Starling is, it’d be hard to even consider _that_ something with a name. Just that it _used_ to be Brandon Lester.
ya know something funny i find is that the dwellers are a reflection of Bucky's sorrows and pain through out his "adventure"... Olivia (Olive) has the ability to spot the player from any location. If Bucky is not tucked inside of a barrel when Olivia looks toward the screen, she will spot him, and teleport near him to begin the chase. much like how Bucky is forced to spot these horrors hidden by the forth wall by his "friend" (aka the player) Olivia can also jump between platforms in the Plaza. much like how Bucky is forced to tirelessly continue unless something blocks him or forces his "friend" to hide him... Nathan (Walter) is slower but has the innate ability to completely demolish barrels, leaving Bucky with one less hiding spot. much like how Bucky in diving deeper and deeper into the island is forced to see these horrors done with his friends and his own faces as his naivety/joy and or hope is slowly demolished piece by piece. Brandon (Bucky) shares Nathan/Walters's ability to break down Bucky's defenses but he also has access to an ability that takes effect completely out-of-game. the only dweller that attacks both Bucky and his "friend". a looming presences that haunts Bucky tirelessly much like how many see Bucky himself... but the most interesting is the last two dwellers... Rex (Blot) who also possesses Olivia's screen-peeking mechanic, however has a unique method of spawning, and cannot do so until it completely finishes. and the only way to stop him from spawning is to beat him back into the trash he comes from and hope you can keep him from rising back up but if he can fully rise (into the spotlight) Rex will spot and hunt Bucky, even if he is hiding. and Bucky is left only to try and hide away until he is left alone or to endure being captured. much like his relation to Mr Broadside in life... and finally we get to Gary (Giovanni)...the only dweller to actively hunt Bucky by reacting to sounds, and pursuing the closest source of noise while like Olivia, bears the ability to jump between platforms. the only dweller that will follow Bucky as an ever present rage and one of the first to be faced. much like how Bucky was made out of spite for a lost first creation...
I didn't know ANY of this and now I am glad I have clicked on this random video with someone SO passionate about this game that gave me a big ass scare when I was watching gameplay footage of it at 3am on a weekend some time ago This is amazing and I move this game even more now
God, this video is so amazing. I am a Giovanni lover, like how his character is "i worked hard, so everybody should work hard" is a realistic depiction how some people are. No, i dont thing he is a "good guy, and a uwu meow meow that is just a little mean", he is awful to both Bucky and Walter. But I still like the writing of him. Anyway, i just wanted to say that is so cool to see someone not only talking about how good this game is but also how good characters are Happy to see more of your content about them if you will do more
liking a character because they're a massive asshole and owning it is way better than the alternative. Strut your shit. The shit in this case being giovanni because he's a massive piece of shit. LMFAO
This video is so fire that the only wait to make it more fire is it set it on fire yes I do regret typing those words but the video is actually really good, I can't wait to watch more of your videos :D
not even halfway through this video but i already feel even *more* bad for bucky ngl, tbh i already sympathized with him alot when i first went through SW64 but now i just wanna hug him ngl. *"a character given life and sentience who didn't choose to, only for his feelings and very identity to be disregarded for the bigger narative."* Edit : now i want to comfort Walter aswell and cry.
Very funny to see TH-cam recommending me this video *right after* finishing Planet Clue's analysis on Alex Yiik from YIIK lol. Regardless, your work is displaying very well here and I sincerely appreciate how in-depth you went for each part, your channel deserves a *lot* more attention than it currently has. Cheers brah, and have some swell holidays!
FUCK yea I love Bucky Beaver. Thank you for this video, I've just started it but I'm very excited to see others thoughts on him. I watched the game before I played it, so that part at the end of the game (also shown 17 mins in the video) of bucky in the ship alone bumping against the sides, I thought that was movements of the people I was watching, but when I played myself and he did that on his own, like man the frantic movements just gets me. First Rex and now Connor, Bucky has such a shit luck with his creators. Rex killing him at the end of every episode and Connor coding Bucky to walk through Connors suicide plan. And then there's the Mullins and the player, they didn't create any instances of him but they do/did control him. The Mullins saying that they love Bucky, giving him all this positive attention through growing the broadside empire... and then one dies and the other is on the run after turning a version of Bucky into a monster. The player can't communicate with Bucky at all beyond the ways of doing what he says: help his friends and hit return. But the world is literally working against him, it will chastise the player for not digging deeper. So over and over of course Bucky can only think the player HATES him and wants to see him suffer. I think about Bucky non-stop treading water underneath the island when viewing out of bounds every day of my life. Video thoughts: I haven't given as much thought to Bucky's relationships with everyone else inside the game, my personal poking has so far been focused on people outside the game, this video is giving me another way to rotate bucky beaver in my mind. I've really enjoyed listening to the information you compiled on it. Id considered myself to have read up on a lot of the extra tidbits but you taught me a lot of things I didn't know, esp about characters backstories and lives beyond/before nulla terra was new to me. The comparison of Bucky's attitude towards Giovanni vs Rex, using death cutscenes to inform character dynamics, the fact that walz isnt a waltz, so many other things you brought up are goddamn INTERESTING. This is going to be rattling around my brain for a while. I love love love that you brought up Brandon as well, thinking about him makes me feel so sad and tragic, I've had drabbles on this and this is making me want to add to them again I am inspired god damn. This was a really enjoyable character study, great work god damn!!

Its funny how people got to the conclusion that bucky was evil when the in game character was just as baffled as the player for the shit that happened like plsss
I love focused character dissection like this. I thought Shipwrecked was alright, but none of the people I watched ever really dove directly into the characters like you have! This is a great piece of work ♥♥
I have a new found appreciation and love for this game (and for Bucky) knowing it’s deeper and more thought out than these other mascot horror games just looking for a quick buck
This is an excellent character study. I adore this beyond words, it's fantastic seeing someone so passionate about this! Also as someone who's on the autism spectrum I found the "a healthy normal amount!" Jokes a lot funnier than i reasonably should've LOL
One of the most important types OCs to have is thw punching bag OC. It's one of the most common ones. It's terrible to think of one becoming sentient...

But didn't you refer to Brandon Lester as Bucky Beaver in the mod, for BONELAB?
Do u still play among us

Your ability to tell the story of real and living beings in a world separate from ours is incredible. These are people. If they revealed themselves to have sentience in regards to us i would not be surprised. Also stumbler deserves headpats
Let’s say it all together, children:
Brandon Lester ≠ Bucky Beaver in the video game of the in-game game Shipwrecked.
I feel like this is happening because people are so used to mascot horror games being rip-offs of/heavily inspired by FNaF, so they're applying the FNaF logic of "character/item/color is symbolic of a person" to Bucky.
@ Maybe, what may help ur case is that FNAF is basically THE mascot horror game that kicked off the genre.
I'm sorry people think the literal game character is brandon? dear god we truly have been brainrotted
When did Brandon get his last name confirmed?
@ uhhhh pretty sure since the game came out in its first form/demo?? Bc I’ve known this since the game came out, so where were you? 😅😂

Bucky: exists
Rex and Giovani: and I took that personally.
Id think that if Rex knew that Bucky was sentient I think he would stop it sure he did torture Bucky but he’s not evil
It's not Bucky who's evil, his actor just got driven to madness by premordial ooze! He's the vessel of the corporation's benal evil!
Hehehe, something that's cuul is how he's a character tuu!! :333 A complicated character like our beaver boy :3333
Honestly its like how the internet made Mickey Mouse the "evil entity". In reality its the corporations that made these problems
tfw you gaslight a humanly flawed main character into committing atrocities and murdering their love ones as they're the monster of the story and not yourself for the consequences of the player's own actions.
This isn't the lack media literacy, this is the lack of media cognition.
It’s what people did with Chara from undertale all over again…
from what i seen of the game when it came out, i mostly thought the story was just the lead developer's decent to madness and the game was an extension of that madness, i never even realized that bucky was his own being and not just a reflection of the dev and his insecurities and a bystander to the player, i didnt even know the murders were real from my 1st impression, so learning more about that what bucky is saying is tied to himself as the beaver/man and not the idea was eye opening, and made me further appreciate the clever and subtle writing that i originally missed
you know what, better thoughts on this video but the way most of the internet demonizes bucky does seem to show how much the internet demonizes mentally ill people, like bucky does certainly have the POTENTIAL to do bad stuff under pressure, but in reality he truly never did anything aside from getting mad at you for ignoring his requests to bring him back to safety to his friends so he wont have to have to face what somebody using his skin did, he genuinely does not deserve to be demonized like this at all all he did was crack under pressure in a scenario that nearly everyone would ALSO crack he deserves way better treatment
It's genuinely so frustrating, because it's something that can happen to anyone and not just people who are mentally ill...
Probably also out of fear for their stability, but coping with it by telling themselves "Hey, at least if I were to crack under pressure, I would be a cool badass."
That is still equally as pathetic.
Yeah no shit he'd be mad eventually
Plus it's also worth considering that the in universe dev was trying to create a general feeling of shame to everyone who played because he was angry himself.
Awesome work
I also didn’t even know that these characters had more depth than what was presented so thank you for shining a light on Bucky as a person.
YESSSSS, a crossover fic would be awesome :333333
Reminds me of this one clip of an Easter egg from a video I can’t remember the name of and one guy is arguing about going outside. The other guy tells him “it’s dangerous out there!” The other guy gets really melodramatic and says “don’t you understand? it’s dangerous in here too” and both of the characters slowly turn their heads towards you. This game looked a bit older too so it’s not a new idea that characters are in your hands when you play a game. That’s why I could never choose any mean dialogues in video games
i was already a "bucky is NOT evil" truther but this video just made me shed tears over bucky and walter im losing my mind

Now let’s hope that people stop making Bucky some evil killer from now on LOL
Really great analysis here! Can genuinely say I learned a lot more about Shipwrecked and the characters within than I already knew. I also really liked when Stumbler was on screen ❤

Thank you so much man!! Rly appreciate the sub :D
You're still not over Stumbler, I see
49:55 OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD I COMPLETLY AGREE WITH YOU
I see this mentality everywhere these days and it gets so bothersome when people apply it to characters who aren't as simple as "good" or "evil" and genuinely dee characters who are flawed and make several bad choices but aren't gonna kill anyone and I hate it.
BUCKY JUST WANTED TO GO HOME AND THAT'S NOT A CRIME!!!!!! i care for him so much it's not his fault someone decided to Do Bad Things in a suit that looks like him
edit: okay now that i've watched more of the video i wanted to add that Rex and Bucky's relationship make me want to eat rocks (/pos). as a guy who makes ocs i get where Rex is coming from, man. one of my guys, Haji, is just everything i worry about and hate about shoved onto a person. i put him in a gang because i'm willingly walking into the culinary industry (which is an absolute NIGHTMARE). he's an insecure trans man because i am too. he's scared of being profiled because of it because i am too. i really want to know how Haji would react to all this if he was some kinda alive. i want to know if he would hate me too. i couldn't blame him. i wonder if Starling!Rex knows Bucky hates him. i wonder if he feels at all bad about it now that Bucky's alive.
Sometimes I imagine my characters couldn’t hate me, instead would thank me and take me under their wing. For 7 years these guys have been my hyper fixation and once, they used to have a lot of my not great qualities, but they now have grown to be the best versions of themselves! Walking down that staircase to reveal the Brandon statue and having waltz kick in gives me chills every time.
nothing is ever "not that deep", people just dont fully pay attention or they feel embarrassed to care
this analysis is so full of care i lov it!!!!!

@@treehouseoffun1242 Its not about taking the silly theories seriously or not, its about the Game Theory team getting pretty easy to parse things wrong cause the content machine can't stop for quality.
It’s like the “Chara is the villain!!!” Arc all over again 😭😭😭
59:51 i really wasnt expecting to hear that Giovanni is just casually a hater for the sport of it.
He's in it for the sport XD

Who knew characters could be morally grey

(But then again, I'm not sure I'm wanting to see discussions of Bucky's Evil Side or what have you lmao)
It's something that I think is such rich territory for media that involves different iterations of a character, and god does Shipwrecked prove it.
Seeing this game going way deeper than i expected is nice, and kinda weird that this is the second time it has happend, the other game being mouthwashing, which i didnt even watch 15 minutes of when i first saw it
Something I found is that N64 inspired horror games are usually pretty good
Crow 64, the multiple animal crossing styled horror games, kitty kart 64
Of course none of them are outstanding but theyre still miles better than what the typical mascot horror
holy fuck i was always confused after watching "explanation videos", it never quite made sense, this is SO GOOD!!!!! i feel like i've just made a grand discovery despite the fact that i've just been listening to a youtube video for an hour
i fucking love this character
ngl this video made me realize just how much stuff i've been missing out on when it comes to this game and how little i really know about it i thought the thumbnails were just silly cuz i feel like the separation between brandan and bucky the character was pretty spelled out lol but oh my god i am missing so much bucky lore thank you for the enlightenment
I agree this because Bucky is wrongly villainized.
Very cool, informative and thought provoking video! Makes me appreciate Bucky as a character and Shipwreck as a whole more.
This video has revealed a lot to me about shipwreck. Holy cow thank you!
Bucky has and always will be one of my favorite characters in indie game history! I never saw him as evil, yet I knew he wasn't some pure soul either, in the best way put. He is human. Or more so, he is beaver. XD
Glad you did the autism video essay. I’m shy so somebody had to. Thank you for your service 🫡
people thought Bucky is evil? huh, didn't know, though I do kind of associate the phrase "Evil Bucky" with Brandon (I only have the Shipwrecked 64 context thanks to pappo)
I honestly feel really bad for bucky through the entire game
I mean, how would you react if someone was impersonating you, committing various crimes in your name... and you had to deal with the consequences?
This is one of the best analysis videos on Shipwrecked 64 that I've seen. Amazing job!
(As of the original comment, I haven't finished watching the video and points may be subject to change)
Seeing Bucky's mascot costume murdering someone and your talk of how people demonize him on the internet got me thinking of another mascot horror franchise, which I think explains why Bucky is commonly perceived the way he is.
It's only natural to think of someone as "evil" or "cruel" if you see their image used to carry out horrific acts, which in turn taints their true identity as that's all people will remember them by- the actions someone else committed using their face as a scapegoat.
giovanni and rex really were just in it for the love of the game huh
this is such a spectacular analysis on this character oh my GOD i might be dragged back into the hyperfixation, i genuinely hope to see more analyses from you!

Only Disney's allowed to do that, for the record.

Im kinda shocked so many people mischaracterized him so bad, like I thought it was obvious how complexed him and the story was. Like everyone is technically capable of murder if driven to that circumstance. I love Bucky so much I think he's such an interesting little guy.

yknow, i clicked on this expecting it to be some nice bg noise n perhaps a dive into the dissonance of modern clickbait covering horror mdia that winds up ignoring the truth abt the characters n their development, but youve totally captivated me with all you had to say n convinced me to look at shipwrecked64 through a new lens. thank you for this, it is seriously harrowing to think about the existential horror of being a sentient character going through all the horrific conditions bucky did, remembering every single thing done in his image. will probably continue to think about this n its implications for a long while..
I did not notice that people would not be able to separate the mascot actor guy (Brandon Lestor) from Bucky Beaver.
Indigo Park moment
This is seriously how it goes
- Game Theory Thumbnail
- It's about some game called "Fluffkins mconlygoodcharacter and the crazy wacky murders he didn't commit"
- It's actually about that
- Insert Fluffkins Mconlygoodcharacter on the thumbnail in some spooky scary matter
- DO NOT TRUST HIM / KILLER?

Oh my gosh one of my favorite shipwrecked artists made an hour long video about it. This is heaven.
THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE, THANK YOU FOR PUTTING EVERYTHING IVE BEEN STEWING OVER FOR MONTHS NOW INTO WORDS I COULD NEVER HAVE THIS IS FANTASTIC, THANK GOD SOMEONE FINIALLY MADE A VIDEO ABOUT BUCKYS MISSCHARACTERISATION GOOD LORD, OUR BOY JUST WANTED TO GO HOME AND WE SOME SADISTIC OMNIPITENT FORCE PUSHES HIM INTO SEEING SUCH HORRIBLE THINGS NEGLECTING HIS OWN LIFE, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND THE DIFFRENCES BETWEEN WHAT HAPPENED IN THE "realtiy" OF SHIPWRECKED AND THIS GAME/CHARACTER WORLD
People go “Evil Bucky” but are they not referring to Brandon Lester who killed the actors because he was a brainwashed Starling?
That’s what I always thought. I mean, Brandon can quite literally be described as “Evil Bucky”. Sorta.
Considering the implications of what a Starling is, it’d be hard to even consider _that_ something with a name. Just that it _used_ to be Brandon Lester.
we're so back guys
Such a peak video! Waiting for this to come out was worth it :)
ya know something funny i find is that the dwellers are a reflection of Bucky's sorrows and pain through out his "adventure"...
Olivia (Olive) has the ability to spot the player from any location. If Bucky is not tucked inside of a barrel when Olivia looks toward the screen, she will spot him,
and teleport near him to begin the chase. much like how Bucky is forced to spot these horrors hidden by the forth wall by his "friend" (aka the player) Olivia can also
jump between platforms in the Plaza. much like how Bucky is forced to tirelessly continue unless something blocks him or forces his "friend" to hide him...
Brandon (Bucky) shares Nathan/Walters's ability to break down Bucky's defenses but he also has access to an ability that takes effect completely out-of-game. the only dweller that attacks
both Bucky and his "friend". a looming presences that haunts Bucky tirelessly much like how many see Bucky himself...
but the most interesting is the last two dwellers...
Rex (Blot) who also possesses Olivia's screen-peeking mechanic, however has a unique method of spawning, and cannot do so until it completely finishes. and the only way to stop him from spawning is to beat him back into the trash he comes from and hope you can keep him from rising back up but if he can fully rise (into the spotlight) Rex will spot and hunt Bucky, even if he is hiding. and Bucky is left only to try and hide away until he is left alone or to endure being captured. much like his relation to Mr Broadside in life...
and finally we get to Gary (Giovanni)...the only dweller to actively hunt Bucky by reacting to sounds, and pursuing the closest source of noise while like Olivia,
bears the ability to jump between platforms. the only dweller that will follow Bucky as an ever present rage and one of the first to be faced. much like how Bucky was made out of spite for a lost first creation...
Should've been 5 hours long smh my head
i think my laptop wouldve caused a nuclear blast
@@underratedgrapejuice It would honestly be worth it
**WOULDN'T wanna go beyond 33.000 MegaWatts of energy on a laptop...
Shut up, Ruffles
Not to be rude but uh… did you just say shaking my head my head-
I didn't know ANY of this and now I am glad I have clicked on this random video with someone SO passionate about this game that gave me a big ass scare when I was watching gameplay footage of it at 3am on a weekend some time ago
This is amazing and I move this game even more now
God, this video is so amazing.
Anyway, i just wanted to say that is so cool to see someone not only talking about how good this game is but also how good characters are
Happy to see more of your content about them if you will do more
liking a character because they're a massive asshole and owning it is way better than the alternative. Strut your shit. The shit in this case being giovanni because he's a massive piece of shit. LMFAO
This video is so fire that the only wait to make it more fire is it set it on fire
yes I do regret typing those words but the video is actually really good, I can't wait to watch more of your videos :D
not even halfway through this video but i already feel even *more* bad for bucky ngl,
tbh i already sympathized with him alot when i first went through SW64 but now i just wanna hug him ngl.
*"a character given life and sentience who didn't choose to, only for his feelings and very identity to be disregarded for the bigger narative."*
Edit : now i want to comfort Walter aswell and cry.
Amazing video! I made sure to watch it with my Bucky plush so he can understand himself better
That’s it, I’m adopting the blorbo beaver.
TRUEEE, CAN I HAVE SHARED CUSTADY
@ Yes!!!
Video thoughts:
I haven't given as much thought to Bucky's relationships with everyone else inside the game, my personal poking has so far been focused on people outside the game, this video is giving me another way to rotate bucky beaver in my mind.
Welp, my respect for you (I've never watched any of your videos until now) has risen
Mickey didn't get TOO much love in the early years. He got stuck peeling potatoes in his first appearance
Mom said it’s MY turn to pick the movie.
1. THIS IS HECKEN AWSOME, YOU EXPLAINED THINGS WAY BETTER THAN I EVER COULD WOAH AND I EVEN LEARNED STUFF I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW???? AAAAAAA I LOVE THIS SILLEY LIL BEAVER
AND 2. I-I KINDA HAVE A LOT OF SIMULARITIES WITH BUCKY????? POOR BEAVERS LOSE THEIR SENSE OF REALITY WHEN ISOLATED, I THINK I DEAL WITH THE SAME THING Q_QQ THE WAY YOU TALKED ABT BRANDON AND BUCKY AT THE END MADE ME FEEL EMOTIONSS, AND I NOW RELATE TO THE TRIO OF BEAVERS EVEN MORE THAN I DID BEFORE, THANK YOU, GRAPJUICEE, I CAN'T WAIT TO HUG MY LIL BEAVER FRIEND WHEN HE COMES

*Why is this image of Gary literally me waking up in the middle of the damn night or someone who had light mode on 😭*
I have a new found appreciation and love for this game (and for Bucky) knowing it’s deeper and more thought out than these other mascot horror games just looking for a quick buck
This was a great video Holy crap
This is an excellent character study. I adore this beyond words, it's fantastic seeing someone so passionate about this!
Also as someone who's on the autism spectrum I found the "a healthy normal amount!" Jokes a lot funnier than i reasonably should've LOL
One of the most important types OCs to have is thw punching bag OC. It's one of the most common ones. It's terrible to think of one becoming sentient...
(Ignore the fact I forgor to comment earlier oops)
Sick as hell to see this finally out! Love your character analysis' so much :)
i fuckin love character studies, i had no clue there was this much in Shipwrecked to DO a character study/analysis but I am enjoying All Of It
