Professionalism in English Language Teaching - Silvana Richardson

- In many contexts English Language Teachers have been perceived historically as the ‘Cinderella’ of the teaching profession. In some cases they have been required to ‘top up’ their qualifications, as a result of education authorities making calls to ‘professionalise the sector’. This talk will explore the causes of such perceptions, what it means to be a professional teacher of English, and the fitness of purpose of international initial training qualifications for educating professional practitioners.

Great talk! This is especially important to be heard by the people in Asian countries, especially in China, Taiwan and Korea, where they still want ONLY Native Speakers with no experience required.
Aleksei: I would love to teach in many Asian countries and having a Master's in ESL, I could, but only if I could go back in time and get 30 years younger! Unfortunately, age is a huge obstacle in Asia in general for working and the cutoff seems unfair and counter-intuitive to what they need there.

Well Teacher Silvana Richardson, thanks because I am someone new on these topics about teaching english but is always good to receive tips for a good developments. A pleasure and thank you.
This talk was very interesting and informative. I do agree with many of the points, however there were a few things in the tone of the talk that felt a bit uncomfortable. The speaker's personal anger and frustration were coming through quite strongly, it seems like there is a kind of pain underneath this talk. My guess is that in the past the speaker has received some comments or treatment from others that has made her feel disrespected or devalued professionally. The image of Cindarella probably represents the feeling in those moments. There are themes of 'threat', 'attack' and 'defense' in the talk. The enemies were personified and the group was encouraged to laugh at and deride them together. Even though in the example of the linkdin profile, the person was not calling himself a professional and was being open about his experience (or lack of) and qualifications. The talk also attempted to discredit aromatherapy, another profession that is subjected to a lack of respect and value in some circles, in order to draw more validity for ESL teaching profession by belittling another - in the way that the unpopular kid tries to distance themself from the really-unpopular kid. Another observation is that this talk is on the Cambridge website, but the speaker is criticising the intensive one month CELTA programme that Cambridge offers. In summary, I do agree with the importance of professionalism, high standards of training and CPD, and the need to create a distinction between the myriad of confusing qualifications in the ESL industry, but the way to build genuine pride, integrity and esteem is not by criticising others.
Thank you so much for saying all of this. I too watched this and picked up pretty easily on the fact that these people are more interested in putting down and criticizing people who teach English without necessarily having a particular English degree. Yes, there are a lot of those out there, and in my own experience, many of these people are well-meaning, well educated, and very eager to help others learn English, all of these good traits. I myself do not belong to either of the categories that the speaker, and the audience, laughed at and derided. I have a Master's in English as a Second Language, I speak numerous other languages, and I have experience in teaching in Hungary, Thailand and Uganda. Therefore, I speak with some knowledge of how it is to teach ESL when you are qualified (as these people measure it) and when you are not. Many of the people that I worked with were obviously not ESL teachers, but they brought to the challenge many new ideas and as I said, an eagerness to help others learn English, a feat in itself. I am proud to have worked with these people and I can assure you that they do not do this for the huge amount of money they get. In fact, they are volunteers for the United States Peace Corps and they are an awesome group of people from all over the US and in all stages of life, from 20 somethings to those over 80. SO please, enough of the derision and laughing at others and more of trying to work together. If you are jealous of the "non-professional" then get out there and go to other countries yourself! Put your words into action and try not to be so angry. It does not help and does not make you better than anyone else!
Thank you so much for this. I felt so uncomfortable watching this talk, and even started to feel shame for my own lack of advanced training (although it's impossible to do any of the Cambridge courses in my country), but I wasn't able to verbalize what exactly seemed wrong to me. Your commentary on the issues was so precise and meaningful. All in all, I think that we need to encourage less professional teachers to grow within the community, rather than stigmatize them.

Profesionalism that way actually defining for so very different sentences, but by me, international language some there make us educational for english language teaching at the collagez in organization, reality very big combinational world.

As the importand understanding the lecturer with the student, so many second language too make the fuct or function on educational knowledge, to identifying english langauge teaching. Subject matter langage approch to present general pedagogical chracrestic for us. As the presenter in a lecturer, for the educational framework, wr must fond the contekstual.

The truth is, no one is well equipped to teach English straight off the CELTA. Perhaps the way CELTA courses are designed should change then? Centres are business oriented and love to advertise their CELTA courses which I am sure many ELT professionals look down upon (yet they teach them).
The level of expertise mentioned would certainly require heaps of experience at a decent teacher development focused centre (not many around!) and the DELTA.
Who’s going to employ a young, inexperienced CELTA teacher then?
