    I've watched this guy for nearly 1 year now, and i saw him improving the video setup, lighting, camera, but I still can't get how he can talk for 10 minutes about "boring stuff" and make It the most interessing thing in the world. This is ledgitness.

      Actually not only smartphones. Samsung hold alot of IP. Something that LG can't match. Samsung have its own fabs, several years ago they just beat intel as the world largest silicon chip manufacturer. Heck even some of Apple parts were manufactured by Samsung.
      The best DRAM memory : Samsung
      Best display panel : Samsung Amoled
      And many more ....

      I'm not a fan of Samsung's battery and software quality. But at least they have relatively simple naming schemes and consistent marketing for their flagship models (S series, S plus series, and Note series; trying to squeeze as much features and specs on 1 phone).
      While LG's marketing is all over the place (G series, V series; gimmicks like modularity, second screen, real leather backs, flexible body etc.)

    1. Dump the LG UI, embrace stock Android
    2. Start making good mid-range phones, not SD 230 ones..

    LG can't save because of:
    1. Slow updates
    2. Hardware defects on some flashgrips
    3. Lost their way with the idiotic notch and the Google button
    4. Nonsense models (the last ones) or hardware outdated models
    LG is the most innovative brand with otherwise nice devices on lower prices, but it's not enough.

    I would like to see lg take a Moto approach, like Google owned Motorola. Software that is easily updated, good display, camera and battery life performance. Sell the g series just below pixel, iPhone, v series prices like $600. Sell the v series just below the note and iPhone 10 maybe around $799 but give it the most premium features and performance.

    • @ashiksorel7823
      @ashiksorel7823 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was actually thinking this myself while watching the whole video. Even if their software on their phones has improved, the LG Optimus UX is synonymous with bugs, slowdowns, and bloatware in the tech community. And ridding your devices of that image isn't easy. I once had a co-worker not buy LG phones simply because it was LG that produced them (he didn't know tech specs, didn't know any of the good and bad features, zero research, just up and decided not to buy it. It's that easy to lose a customers in the smartphone business.
      If they partnered with Google in this regard this is good way to change image and to show how committed they are into timely software updates and usability.

    • @ashiksorel7823
      @ashiksorel7823 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LG is already trying to do that with their own software (akin to Samsung and Xiaomi). They are trying to market their own software features with their AI gimmick with ThinQ and its branding has already become an industry punchline. Problem is LG's Software has a bad image and there isn't much they can do about it.
      The one thing they can do is make an about face and do something that is actually pro-consumer for once. There is no "software money" to be had if the software is awful already.

    My problems with LG phones
    1. Software(just switch to stock)
    2. Small camera sensors
    3. Always a compromise in something like G5's immature design, G4 and G6's inferior processor, V30's bad front camera and display issues.
    4. Mediocre Battery
    If they resolve most of these issues and flex their marketing arm I think their G2 days are gonna come again

  • @andrewjpalla
    @andrewjpalla 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I like LG phones because they've always felt like the quirky underdog of the smartphone world. I would've tried the LG G5 if not for the warnings and horror stories of bootloop issues that plagued the G4 and, according to some accounts, the G5.
    LG took up quite a few prime time TV spots for the G5 in my country but they were those atrocious ads where everyone in the scene was Jason Statham. Part of me could not get behind the marketing and branding of such a device.
    It also doesn't help that pretty much salesperson at the network carrier stores is paid to push Samsung phones.
    I also hold the opinion that the notch is a terrible design choice and am dumbfounded by all the companies that blindly follow Apple's lead.
    I just don't like the way the G7 looks compared to the G6. That's the reason I'd sooner pick up the Samsung Galaxy S9.

      I still love my G5, but they just fail at marketing... A removable battery good marketed with a charging cradle is a huge win! • @CrackedDylMil
    @CrackedDylMil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    It should be obvious. The only good phones they make have defects, and they won't refund you once you encounter the defects. This is how you break consumer trust
    G4 - bootloops, overheats
    5X - bootloops, battery problems
    V10 - can't play 60fps video, bootloops
    G5 - bootloops; back glass self-shatters with temperature change
    G6 - came out with a generation old SoC
    V20 - root checker (why??)
    V30 - severe screen defects
    All of these phones also get maybe 3 or 4 updates ever, have locked down bootloader's for most carriers in the US, and have very bloated software.
    LG was destined to die after their first bootlooping generation. 4 phones later? Heh

    I see a real split in the market in general. Some consumers want/think they need a top end phone that does everything. In which case they want a top name brand (Apple, Samsung etc), but some consumers just want a basic reliable phone because..they just want a basic reliable phone..or (like me) they already invested in a kick-ass laptop that handles everything of real importance..

      Actually it’s cuz with android phones you gotta have space inside for the screen ribbon cable to go
      Cuz in the iPhone the bottom edge of the actual screen curves back inside the phone so it can place the ribbon cable up away from the bottom and the bottom bezel can be so much thinner and this is apples owned patented technology

      In my country it is, even on the cheaper ones, a Moto C its for like $80 and a samsung J2 prime for like $150, and both have the same specs, well... the 1st one has 16gb, the 2nd just 8.

    • @larslovestech
      @larslovestech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      by premium he means that their main sales are usually their flagship devices...when a new samsung flagship device is launched it will make millions of sales in comparisson to some of their mid range offerings,just think about it when or if you ever go into a provider shop like EE or vodafone...the sales rep there will always attempt to either sell you the latest samsung or apple flagship,their advertisements all over the shop and everywhere else will usually be for their latest flagship,the most youtube reviews will also be for their latest flagship...and this is why they sell mostly their flagship devices over companis like LG who end up selling their flagship devices at highly reduced costs

    • @JaySee5
      @JaySee5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, it is. Samsung is more expensive than its competitors minus Apple. Just because they offer mid-range phones doesn't mean they're not premium mid-range. It's like a Porsche 911 and a Cayman.

    • @FFXfever

      Duilio Helfenstens very much so. Even in their budget range, they're not a great value, but instead, give it stuff like oled display to make it look prettier than competitors in that segment. They are over the counter sellers, so companies like Xiaomi doesn't even belong in the same Price range when comparing internals.

    LG has been selling Both premium and Value for Money products .
    So do other brands.
    But only Samsung and Huawei can pull it off with one brand name.
    Oppo now has 4 brand names to sell their bipolar idealogy of products with oppo and OnePlus etc.
    LG needs to rename their budget segment .
    Literally the only reason I haven't been able to convince people to buy and LG phone is because they remember LG buy their cheap lower end smartphone s and can't imagine and Premium LG phone. And the fact that there is nothing in the middle makes it worse.

      He does not mean that. By premium and value category he considers the price of flagships of various brands. Lets just take a look at some of the prices of flagships in previous year(during launch)
      iphone X- 1000$(Premium)
      Samsung note 8-900$(Premium)
      One plus 5t- 499$(Value)
      LG G6-800$ at launch but price soon reduced a lot unlike Samsung or Apple.

    Well the first phone comes out with Nougat was LG V20 and since then it only got one security update (November 2017!) and there is no sign of Oreo update yet. Even though I think about LG as my next smartphone because of its audio capabilities, however I don't want to have the similar experience again. LG V30 costs around 500 Euro right now in Germany while Samsung S9 costs same. So it'd be a hard to decide.

I loved the price, the camera, the button placement, the screen, the battery, the looks, the software... perfect. Recently switched to a OnePlus 5 and now I get the same feeling i got with the G2. I have had my G6 for over a year now and I love it, coming from a G3 that I also loved, I feel that the G6 and newer LG phones are just not really appreciated. If you compare the G7 to the Oneplus 6 they are on paper quite similar but the hype right now is focused on Oneplus. In my opinion LG should commit to both of the options you mentioned in your video, bring prices down so that they are the clear winner in the price category and advertise more, get people hyper for their devices. The more LG can secure market share the quicker they will grow.

  • @AtlanticPicture

    LG has several issues to iron out, basically *they need to find and stick to a direction* .
    hardware: design spasm, one decent like the V30, then they go nuts and copy others for no reason like the notch, or failed ideas like the mods,
    software: old boot issues and nearly no sw updates, no sec patches either.. my V20 came and went w/ 7.0
    pricing: ignoring the competition, V20 over $800 at att unlocked then goes down to 285 at BH less than a year later, V30 nearly 1000!?
    marketing: .. what marketing.. ?

    Improve on specs. Bigger battery life. Best processor. More ram better screen to body ratio and have competitive prices and done. The G6 didn't have any of those. Though it LOOKS premium. And to most performs premium. If it had 64gb storage and 4gb ram with an 835 or 660 I would of bought in on amazon next month instead I'm buying a better phone at the same price. Huawei Mate SE

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Huawei mate se doesn't have a SD835 though. It comes with an off-brand Kirin processor. The problem with those processors is that after the company stops supporting them, it's a nearly impossible to find custom firmware updates for your phone. So, you can't even root your phone and keep getting support from the community. The problem is that Snapdragon generally releases source code for the drivers, while these off-brand processors generally do not. If that's not important to you, then that's fine, but if it is, it's definitely something to consider.
      That's mainly why I went with the One Plus 6 over say the Honor 10 (which is a subsidiary brand of Huawei) because the One Plus 6 uses a SD845 while the Honor 10 uses a Kirin 970 processor. it's also because of these off-brand processors why those phones are more affordable.

    I have a V20, and I mostly love it. The good points: ESS DACs, micro SD, removable battery, good signal quality, decent cameras, fast enough processor, decent display, 2nd display. The not-so-good points: Mediocre to poor customer support, undeveloped core apps, sparse settings and diagnostics, not water resistant, curved screen difficult to protect with tempered glass.
    So, if LG recognizes their weaknesses and addresses them, I'll be impressed. I suspect that they have a lot of inertia in their organization.

  • @BarbecuedPossum

    I'm still using my LG V20 as my daily phone. It's brilliant. I don't know why everyone has a downer on LG phones.. Maybe their lower tier stuff isn't very good.
    The v20 comes with 2 batteries and an external charger, and is super quick to switch batteries so you can always have a full battery ready to go or carry 2 batteries if you're going away over a weekend or need to heavily use it for GPS or games.
    Its fast enough, never had slow downs or crashes, it has a 2nd screen at the top that always shows time, recent apps or quick toggles (even when the main screen is off) which I thought may be a gimmick is genuinely brilliant. And barely consumes any battery.
    The main thing though is the durability/longevity. Coming from a Nexus 6P which it's internal non-removable battery started to last less and less time in 15 months and the charge port that after that same kind of time got really loose and stopped working well and needed the angle of the connector to be perfect to connect.. I don't have to worry about this with v20 as this has the removable battery and also the external battery charger. So you don't actually ever have to plug the actual device in unless you need both batteries fully charged or for data transfer.
    + u get dual sim, sd card slot, fingerprint scanner, ir remote, nfc and everything else you could ever need.
    I don't think I'll ever change from one of these unless battery tech has a huge advancement. Couldn't be happier.

    I'll wait and see. I like my LG G4 when hardware is concerned with the nice high contrast curved ips screen and it even functions after falling down about 4-5 meters (cracked screen but functional). But the software and support for older models makes me not very enthusiastic to buy another LG phone. If they'd guarantee 4+ years of updates after worldwide launch then I might consider it but for now I prefer a phone closer to stock android for a lower price. The pixel2 supporting with updates for 3 years isn't bad but it's still cheaper to get a €300 Motorola every 2 years while not really giving up much.

      Yes I liked LG G4 too, excellent camera for it's time. Except it's a shame that they had serious manufacturing defect and most LG G4 bootlooped. LG should have voluntarily recalled all LG G4 and replaced all the phones. Doing nothing about it seriously tarnished the company brand and reputation. Samsung also messed up too with Galaxy Note 7, but at least they were decisive and recalled all their defective products.

    I love LG. I bought a $100 LG Premier Pro LTE, signed it up with straight talk for $45 bucks a month and it works great, the network is decent and above all, I cut the price of my phone down from the $800 samsung stuff that proved to be glitchy for me and filled with stuff I didn't even use, and the price of my phone bill down from some ridiculous $100 unlimited everything plan that I barely used, down to something I actually use.. with no contract too. So I cut my phone price down almost completely and my phone bill in half. I'm quite happy with the minimalist approach to phones as I'm no longer really a power user. I watch youtube, I use Discord, I expect good battery life and a passable to good screen, that's really it.. for anything heavier I go to my samsung chromebook or my PC. I don't understand why people spend computer price tags for cell phones, and so much on cell phone plans. Maybe in a few months I will regret getting a cheapo phone but to be honest, I can't see it degrading much faster than planned obsolence already does for flagship models.

    I've been in the wireless tech field (both on the carrier sales side, and technician side) for a few years and I have some thoughts...
    So hear me out, I don't want to sound like I'm wearing a tinfoil hat but I've been doing my own personal research on LG smartphones. I've actually made note and date of every LG I've sold, and also any that my peers may have bought.
    Most of them came back to me with various problems ex: camera failing to open, batteries draining quickly, apps crashing abruptly etc. Some had regular wear and tear, others were in perfect condition. But the thing that I've noticed the most, is that not a single LG has lasted for more than 13 months. That has always been the cutoff point. This to me is unbelievable.
    I had my suspicions before I had gotten into this field professionally, when a friend of mine from a few states over was complaining of his LG g4 locking up with the error msg "Android system has stopped working". I asked if he had still kept his original receipt and box together from the time of purchase. And wouldn't you know...
    Exactly. 13. Months.
    Hmmmm...
    Ok LG *CoughEveryYearUpgradeProgramCough*
    I thought, "maybe I'm just crazy". Such a large company surely couldn't get away with such a scheme, right?...Right???
    Skip forward to when I moved out of my parents house. They now had an empty space to make a guest room and wanted to outfit it with a new TV on the wall. Dad gets a good deal on a new 4k LG TV from Costco, wall mounts it, and generally it only gets used when we have company over (which isn't all to often).
    You wouldn't believe it, but guess what?? Dead. Month 13, unresponsive.
    ....
    Ok.
    Flash forward to my short time working at T-Mobile (3 months, I was in between moves and needed work). This is when the LG G6 was launching. We had gotten a demo unit to display at a brand new location. I personally set it up, and maintained the live demo. Within 1 month, we realized it was defective and there was a recall. No big deal, these things happen. 2nd LG G6 is delivered by our new LG rep. He helps me set up the new demo unit display and we get to talking...
    He was completely aware of the 13 month situation, and verified that my suspicions were not only accurate, but are in fact true. He warned me to never purchase an LG device.
    He explained how much flack he had caught from all of the other stores he's been districted to, and how many others like myself have noticed similar happenings.
    Needless to say, I was blown away. Also, spoiler alert but that 2nd LG G6 became unable to charge within 2 weeks because it "detected moisture" in the charging port, good grief.
    Tl;dr
    LG is a horrible smartphone company. LG is a horrible company overall. You only buy LG if you hate yourself. I would feel completely comfortable watching this company fade out of exsistance.
    If you've made it this far, congratulations. If anyone else has a similar story please reply to this comment, I would love to read them. Thanks again TechAltar for being as wonderful as you are. You are seriously an amazing source of information, and I can't wait to see what you have to share next!

    LG has to improve their marketing and quality assurance. You go to a website like Reddit and you wouldn't believe people are posting about the same device. With some the phone is a slice of Heaven and with others it reads like they purchased the equivalent of a carnival prize. I had to go through three LG V20s before I got the golden ticket. The 1st one had audio problems while video recording. The 2nd had problems with completing voice commands. When I brought that one back to T-Mobile they were going to try the old send it in under warranty route. I told them there was no way I was going to accept a refurb unit after less than a week of purchasing the phone...give me one new off the shelf or give me a refund. The 3rd time was the charm with a device that has performed well for close to two years. Another thing is LG needs to go back to providing the features that made their phones stand out from the herd like replaceable batteries. LG decided to be more Samsung-like with their devices so when I got the urge to upgrade, I cut out the middleman and purchased a Samsung phone.

  • @AngelManuelPerez
    @AngelManuelPerez 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree on spectrum placement of LG devices. LG should finally decide to having one true flagship and sell mobile phones at OnePlus prices with the G7 being in the 500 dollar range and the V30 being their true in the 600 to 700 dollar range. The only reason I got a V30+ was that wide-angle camera, it came with 128GB, headphones, and T-mobile had a BOGO promo going on.

    I had an LG G3.For that time was extremly innovative,like 78% screen to body ratio (like the Samsung A8,which is an infinity display).Had Dolby Atmos classifies speakers and 5.5 inch 2K LCD Display,having a 13Mp shooter and impressive DAC.However nowadays they are exactly as you said,not value not premium,not innovative but trying to catch up.Also I see that they choose BTS because of us,the fans(armies).AND I LOVE BTS OMGASH,BLESSES BE THOSE BOYS.And you can deduce from my crisis why they chose them.THE G7 HAS LIKE A BTS THEME,GAAAAAH.I'D FRIKIN LICK THE DISPLAY WHENEVER I POWER IT ON...
