    Excellent! I speak rusty Mandarin, but would like to improve my vocabulary. My native tongue is English. I learned spoken Mandarin with the Yale Romanization, but know little of the modern Pinyin phonetic system. I hope this might be a handy way to improve things!

    I'm a little late catching up with this BUT I think it is a great idea. I'm Australian and have been trying to learn Thai for years now but really struggle with the 'tones' (being an Aussie doesn't help because we speak with a nasal monotone, so I've been told) I would love to try your idea and I'm going to google ll the new words I want to learn and the probably just write them phonetically .... learning to understand written Thai is beyond me I feel. You are lucky that you have the background in in understanding 'characters' ... it's always good to see you

    • @TheCantoneseGuyLucas
      @TheCantoneseGuyLucas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Marg Lewis! How are you?
      Yes! Thai is actually difficult for some people because of the tones. (Is the same thing in Cantonese) But after a while you will get the hang of it.
      A tip I can give you with tonal languages is, Sentences must sound like a melody, otherwise they will have a different meaning.
      Good luck! Hope you can master Thai :)
      Is always good to see you too!

    This is so clever, I can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing about this method!
    for Japanese, I really recommend learning Katakana words first, because there are more and more foreign borrowed words in modern Japanese, and Katakana is easiest to learn, so you'll be able to increase your vocabulary a lot.
    I would try doing your method too, but I consider mathematics and programming languages to be more important to learn for now.

    • @TheCantoneseGuyLucas
      @TheCantoneseGuyLucas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for commenting!
      Yes, mastering katakana allow you to read a lot of words everywhere in Japan!
      Good luck with your programming and math! Ganbatte!

    Thanks for the tips. I'll try the post it strategy. I am, very slowly, learning my wife's language, Mandarin, so that I can't understand my mother in law more in Taiwan who doesn't speak a word of English and has trouble saying my name. Hopefully next time we visit Taiwan i can understand her more.

    is it how you learnt English? another question is, how do you remember verbs, adj and adv?
    I guess in Chile it's not that common to speak English with locals.

    • @TheCantoneseGuyLucas
      @TheCantoneseGuyLucas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I learnt by playing video games! :D
      I was going to make a follow up post, but basically, after you learn the vocabs, you add a sentence to each post it note. So for example, "Window" becomes "I open the window". You can also do it with adjectives.
      Yeah... in Chile almost no one speaks English... they teach it in school but is really poor.
      Good luck with your Language learning!
