This is definitely more helpful than the 'introverts are dull and nobody likes them, just don't be introverted' advice I heard recently.

My experience is that you should never go shooting alone. Have a partner with whom you can take photos of each other, you are cheerful, laugh, and in the meantime, the street photos will also take their turn.

I like shooting with someone else on occasion, especially at night as I mentioned. There are definite advantages to shooting with a partner.

Nice video. As a shy, introverted person, this has encouraged me to do more street photography. Thanks

Only just found your channel after buying into a camera. At the moment I’m virtually petrified of the thought of street photography. So bad it’s hard to even force myself to leave the house knowing I’m going to face attention and possible confrontation in the smaller town I live.
Even the thought of heading in to take photos without people has suddenly filled me with dread.
Really hope I can push past the barrier. I wanted to take up this hobby to have an escape, not add to the stress I have to cope with. Fingers crossed!

My advice would be to go out in small doses and take photos without people in order to get comfortable in the environment. Go out for 10-15 minutes and just photograph architecture or things in windows or whatever you find interesting. Maybe the next time you go for 20 minutes. Sometimes we have to "put our toes in the water" instead of diving in the pool. Good luck!

@@streetlifeinappleton thanks for replying. Yup, I’m gonna have to do it. My wife is suggesting going out in the car in a few evenings to local places away from the town centre, and shoot abstracts or architecture from near the car to get some sort of confidence up. That actually works as I would like to create a book for myself with the theme of places built by, but devoid of humans, if that makes sense.
Having 50 and 90mm 1.8 primes should enable me to get somewhere with that.

Very wise words there young man - thank you for them! I think that a good thing to do before you start pressing the shutter release is to go for a nice quiet meal in the heart of the city, where you are shooting and fill your belly. Maybe have a beer or a glass of wine to relax yourself, no more than one and then head out. I always feel that a good relaxing meal makes everything feel better. Take care and be safe out there....

Thanks for the comment...I really like that idea! Definitely a full belly helps you feel more content and happy. Sometimes, either before or after I shoot, I will stop at my favorite coffee shop and have a vanilla chai. Almost always puts me in a good mood. In winter it's great to go in and warmup and take a look at the photos I just shot...good luck!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I"m a retired U.S. Coast Guard photojournalist and am now trying to return to my love. I've spent some time over the last couple months drifting around my city. I really can relate to your words here. During my time in the service, I was able to create my own photo shoots and gain the approval of my subjects. The street work seems to be dicey when people see you aiming the camera their way. It is a different experience than what I've experienced in the past. I'm just chatting here sorry. I feel I'm being successful, but I want to calm my feelings and the subject's feeling. Anyway, thank you

Thanks for your thoughts...I read somewhere recently that "street photography is not for the faint of heart." There is some truth to that but I also think that may be too harsh. We make street photography as uncomfortable as we want it to be. I find the more you practice it the easier it becomes to "push your boundaries" of where you are comfortable. Bottom line, I feel like this genre can be enjoyed by almost any type of photographer, regardless of personality type.

Thank you for the video and the lesson on shy photographers. I’ve recently started shouting street “blind”, I.e. not looking through the viewfinder. There are also a number of times I’ve shot holding my camera by the grip in a vertical position as well. It’s a more casual way to hold it and less obvious.

Thanks...I've done that a few times myself. I worry about focus when I do that but I do think it's a good way to get candids on the street easier.

If you're in Appleton Wisconsin, you have that great burgers at the diner next to the Best Western... those are epic burgers, and Appleton is quintessential small town America. Great town and great for street photography.

Thanks! We have lots of great restaurants so you might referring to Fuddruckers, which has since gone out of business. Appleton is a great small city with lots to offer. Very glad I moved back here 10 years ago!

@@streetlifeinappleton Yeah I was there for a friends wedding in 2008... haven't been there since. Too bad about Fuddruckers... that double bacon burger was out of this world.
