    Mr. Steven Ryan here TY for this video. I paused it on the large piece and ran off to look how bad those pans were that I salvaged. Not bad at all. Surface rust. I also found out that the Three style square pan is a Lodge BE 8 H. When I searched for it I was able to see a photo on Ebay. I am keeping all the pans I picked up and have a desire to get the cleaning started when I can afford it. I no longer have a bit of fear of the baking process and am welcoming the challenge of the task so I can one start a new hobby and two eat some better food... .. lol. Back to the rest of the video now. TY

    Stephen great video and thanks again for your readings of God's word at the end. I notice you wear your wedding ring while roughing around with all that cast iron. I was a jeweler before I retired so for you and all that read this and value their wedding rings. If your heart and soul is in that ring get an inexpensive sterling ring to wear while working, it'll save a lot of wear and tear on the one your heart is in so it'll last your lifetime. I've seen too many hearts broken because the ring was too far gone to be repaired. Keep up the good work I always look forward to these videos.

    Found this video very helpful. Having someone show what to get as well as what not to get along with pricing expectations is great! There are a lot of vintage stores near me with cast iron and this gives me a better idea of which are overpriced and/or not worth picking up. Have a great day!

      Boiling water does a real number on the seasoning. Especially the lids. Usually when I'm cooking something with a lid, I will go ahead and spray the inside of the lid with non-stick spray just to give it a little bit of extra protection.

    good advice; i bought a super rusted 1920's Wagner skillet for $5 last year, and restored it in my e-tank; it had a LOT of pitting & took a while to sale ... like you, i don't think i will fool around w/investing in a piece so severely rusted over again, unless it belongs to a friend that wants to restore it for sentimental reasons ... i mostly bought it b/c i knew it was old, and i wanted to test my e-tank out on it

      I bought a BSR "project" skillet just to test out restoring cast iron. Just from some scrubbing with vinegar solution, I found it was badly pitted under the rust. I'll probably try it out in my untested e-tank, but I'll never buy one so rusted again.

  • @jerskitty

    I have a tea pot that was badly rusted. There was loose chunk's of rust inside of it. I emptied it out scrubbed it down as best I could then dried it in the oven and oiled it up a bit. After I was able to see that it is a Wagner. It took up enough oil to turn black again, even the inside. The issue is that the bottom of the inside is still not smooth. My question if I put it through another cleaning session with some lye or vinegar will that remove more of the roughness on the surface or is that the pitting you're talking about?
    The next question is, if I can get the whole piece restored how do I care for it when I use it. I've read that you're not supposed to continue to season the inside of it so do you empty it and heat dry each time you use it or does it have to be towel dried etc.?
    I was really too little to pay attention to how my grandmother cared for her's and I only recall it sitting on the wood stove at all times in the winter. My guess is that she was using it to keep moisture in the air as well as to make coffee and tea, but I don't recall seeing what she did with it in the summer when most of the cooking was being done outside.

    Heat up the fire damaged skillets until they are red, slowly cool it down over 10 hours. This will help put the cast iron back to its original structure. Also, heat it slowly too, maybe over 30 -45 minutes, evenly as you can.

    I think as far as the pitted and warped ones go you might still be able to use it well for baking things in the oven and some pieces are just neat enough to be displayed as decor if someone wants to put the effort into cleaning them. I am just so jealous of all cast iron people back east collect. Here in Nevada if you go to a thrift store you're going to have a hard time finding anything older than the 80s or 90s. So in my opinion the effort to restore certain pieces would be worth it for the history of the piece alone.

      I have a skillet with some fairly bad pitting by one of the pour spouts, like it was sitting at a slight angle with a little water in it at one time. It's nicely restored and I can use it just like my other pans. Eggs slide right over the pitted spot, I don't even notice it. Pitted pans really can be good users. This one is Favorite Piqua Ware, it's about 100 years old and I got a nice discount because of the pits!

    You're probably not familiar with this where you live but I have a Ward Ware ( Montgomery Ward) waffle maker. It has no rust and no cracks and I'm planning on using it. It's going to be very difficult to re-season. I don't see anything in your previous videos for hard to season cast iron wear. I would love to see you do a video on these harder to do pieces. Maybe I don't have to re-season it and just use it as it is but I don't know what was in it before I bought it. Thank you.

    I'm just getting into cast iron and I love antiques in general. However, I want things to serve a purpose. If I'm not looking for "resale value" but something I can actually use and cook with does it matter how well it can be restored? Or is it preference?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot of people (reloaders and fishermen) will use cast iron as a melting pot for lead for casting bullets and sinkers etc.
    How do you tell if a pot or pan has been used to melt lead or cast ingots (in corn bread or muffin pans)? Is there a way to test for it? If so what are the steps...are they invasive or just surface. Lead can be toxic, particularly if ingested. Does it contaminate the cast iron or does the conditioning protect it, and stripping it and reconditioning gets rid of all lead. Or does electrolysis or lye get rid of it?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once lead has contaminated a piece of cast iron cookware, it is no longer safe to use for any kind of food preparation. There is no way to ever remove it. You can use a surface lead test kit to check for lead contamination. Most paint stores will have them and you can also get them at Lowes or Amazon. You can also use cotton swabs to make them go further.

    Question: After cleaning up a Wagner square skillet in a lye bath, I found the iron to have a darker area in the middle of the cooking surface, but it was clean bare iron. Is it normal for the iron to darken in places from use? Or should I be concerned about contaminants? It’s a pre-1960 piece.

    • @castIroncookware

    just thinking that on an old pitted pan of no value, to break out the wire wheel and sanding discs and go at it. you can at least smooth the handles to where they feel good. me, i don't mind pits at all, these things are work horses and cook exactly the same as a smooth one. i'm in it for the pure joy of cooking, and if i didn't use a piece regular it would just be wasting my precious space. my 3 piece set is a griddle, chef skillet, and a dutch oven. they get used for cooking and reheating leftovers every day.

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From a user's point of view, the pits will except seasoning and it will be non-stick just as much as a smoother pan. Using a wire wheel will affect the ability for the seasoning to adhere to the iron. Even on really bad pieces, I will stick to Safe methods. Of course on some of those really bad pieces, there's not much that you can do to make him worse.

    What's the deal with pitting?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pitting usually occurs from long tern exposure to moisture. Though it does have an effect on appearance and collectible value, most of the time the usability is not effected.

    When they have heavy rust why not just use a bead blaster or sand blaster to clean them

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those methods have too much of a smoothing effect on the surface that makes it hard to hold a good seasoning.
