Awesome Brooklyn. I want to add that if ever you add Hydrogen Peroxide then make sure you add to the sump, well away from direct contact with fish or roots. The 35% and even the Walmart 3% can cause damage to fish gills and the roots. Fish gills will turn whiteish where they come into contact with too high of concentration before it full mixes in the water. I’ve never had a fatality but the effected fish would gulp at the surface like there was low oxygen in the water until they recover. Takes just under a week. This was an observation I had when treating for Algae.
Hey Brooklyn catching up to your videos after a while I must say you are still wooo! I'm guessing if you really want to use hydrogen peroxide for treatment maybe you can treat in a separate tank away from the Aquaponics System so as not to affect the Bio Filtration.
I have used it. The roots like it but the foliage does not. It will actually burn foliage. As you said, the main problem is that it kills the good bacterial that is needed in an aquaponics system. I have used it for treating root rot, but that's the only thing i would use it for and i when i do, i close the loop to the grow bed and rinse thoroughly before opening the loop back to the system.

Hi James, just so you know, according to what you're treating, root or foliage, HP shouldn't have the same concentration. Foliage needs lighter concentration.
If you close the DWC off for about a day, all of the hydrogen peroxide will breakdown and be safe to reconnect. It's not very stable after being exposed to light or organic material. The extra oxygen will find something to pair with pretty quickly. You'd probably fine after just an hour, but I'd be safe and wait 24 hours.
Great info brother. Quick question, instead of using tanks to hold the fish, I have seen some folks create a pond, fill it with fish and do aquaponics growing that way. What would be the pro's ans con's over using tanks? Thanks again.

I'm not certain this is something in hydroponics or not, but I'll tell my experience with hydrogen peroxide in my aquarium. I was just setting up my aquarium and they tend to get big swings as the nitro-cycle takes over. I had hair algae to form first on the few plants in it. I took a turkey baster and fill it with 3% peroxide then squirted it on the plants with the hair algae while underwater. I took them out the next day and sprayed it on them then used a brush to clean the leaves. The hair algae disappeared. The next thing was the cyanobacteria. It began in a few spots without as much flow. In two days time, the bottom of the tank was half covered. I did the same underwater method on all the places. After three daily doses, the cyanobacteria was eliminated from the tank. Now granted this is a 10-gallon tank and I only have a sponge filter in it. Hydrogen peroxide works and will not even kill your fish or plants at the 3% level. You must do it until the cyano is coated with bubbles, but don't go over a full baster of it. It will crash your nitro-cycle. (I never thought to write anything down. I'll do that on the next tank.)
I thought this might be helpful to some since I have seen hydroponics systems at greenhouses where they have algae problems.
I've done the same. I've also had success in helping a case of ich and popeye on some black mollies I was keeping in a tank with mystery snails. I'm playing around with smaller scale indoor aquaponics because I have a disability that limits my ability to run a larger outdoor system. I use large shelving systems using food grade trays as grow beds. I'm working on breeding black mollies for small systems. I'm moving onto bluegills in a large aquarium soon, and possibly some channel catfish.
We use it in our storage tanks but not in an active system. It takes very little to keep algae out, and simply drip it in slowly. We use rain catchment for a lot of our water, so keeping it clean can be a challenge. We also only use food grade h2o2.
I was wondering what types of plants would you not recommend for aquaponics?

This is helpful. I never thought it to be safe in growing food. I use the regular 35% diluted with water for house plants. Yes it has helped with root rot and gnats or fruit flies. This is good to know. I'm gonna have to invest in the food grade brand. Thanks again for another great lesson. ❤

Question what about fungus on leafs of plants in the system ?
Do you think that aggressive bubbler in the bio filter is good enough to oxygenate a small nft. like 15 gallons. or does the bacteria pretty much consume the extra oxygen and still need to oxygenate the other parts of the system. basically i can't afford a oxygen tester. wonder if you can test the oxygen just before and just after the bio filter of your system to better understand how that culture affects oxygen levels
Hey APG, Dude when your fish lives in 28°C water do you cool it down before it comes in contact with the plants roots? I am curious because 28°C would lead to root rot. If so you would need to heat it up or heat the fish tank, right? At what water temperature do you keep your plants? Could you take us on a tour of your system measuring the temperatures at every possible station including ambient temperature? Greetings from Germany

I once sported a lot of “Tripp wear” pants and long coats. Chains were a real thing in the style. I dig it.
