Marvin Gaye - National Anthem, 1983 NBA All-Star Game

  • On February 13th, 1983 Marvin Gaye sang the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles. Gaye's rendition is one of the most legendary performances of The Star Spangled Banner in sports history. The performance unconventionally made use of a drum machine, and Marvin made it work like no one else could have.

And the thing is they're are so many brainwashed and misconstrued out there in society that need to be refreshed on its value! Let Marvin singing it lead the way like only he could! Wow, he nailed it and I vividly remember his rendition as if it we're yesterday! I was 11 at the time and was watching that live! Oh and btw to all those brainwashed and misconstrued, Marvin Gaye had representation of everyone in the world! He was all about the American people getting along and when he sang the anthem that day you could feel it with each word!

Lakers talk so much shit that we make people physically ill, I've witnessed this throought my life. My motown-grown parents and their sibilings and some oler cousins too all cried when he was killed; and I mean cried, we all did. I was in elementary school in the 5th grade and this was more than a snap shot memory. this all star event was watched; prime time watched and everyone was groven to this. good times. thanks marvin, rest up! and because this historical moment was at the inglewood forum, my beloved lakers, rest up jerry, rest up kobe, rest up Queen Gianna

say what you want and believe, but I say Whitney Houston's version CAN NOT TOUCH Marvin Gaye's This one to me represents ALL OF US! Black White, Italian, Jewish, Chinese you name them it represents us all. Why you ask? Simple, we know the National Anthem and we all know the magic of Motown and most of all, when he was alive, at one time of another, we damn sure knew the musical beauty of Marvin Gaye. Now if that ain't unification or puts the 'United' in the United States of America, then I don't what, when, where, who, how and especially why the hell it doesn't! It's not like soul don't exist. and nobody every sang it and had the crowd clapping. So to all those before and after that have had the privilege of singing this song and any major event, god bless you all. But strictly speaking on the behalf of those who love this version, Whitney, your was patriotically good and as a an American I can appreciate that. But Marvin gave it soul, and I am just as proud to be a man of color as well as an American.

I love to see an artist being themself. 😂
In 2024 Marvin Gaye would get cancelled just for singing the national anthem HIS way. As if he doesn’t have a right as an American and an artist to do it his way 😏

🖕🏾this anthem I'm just here cause this black man sung it better than anybody and this song wasn't made for his skin tone

Would love to see this play behind President Trump as he takes the Presidential stage for a second time in 2024. Ive never not choked up like a baby when watching or hearing this version. I love my country, i love freedom and I love my countrymen. Bless us all, EVERYONE.

Feel like a sappy Little girl trying in vain to choke back a never ending deluge of tears. Beyond words… in sufficient explanation…

Please don't equate that jack ass to Marvin Gaye.

Would Kaepernick still kneel if Marvin Gaye was singing the anthem?

    Drum beat is quite annoying..
Stappleton's version outplays this big time.

Sorry, cannot compare with Whitney's 1991 Super Bowl rendition.
Marvin's father's last words to his son were, "Marvin, this is the last 45 you will ever hear."
