Yes yes yes!!! This band is AMAZING! I cannot talk more positively about them. Their final three albums Colour Of Spring, Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock are both flawless masterpieces
This band is like nothing else, really. I encourage you to hear "Life is what you make it" from the same album and the 2 Albums they made after this one
Talk Talk should definitely be part of your collection. It’s one of those very original bands that created music like no others. In every aspect creative, sublimely produced and exploring uncharted territory!
1986. The year of Peter Gabriel's So and Talk Talk's The colour Of Spring. The last one has more than once helped me out to find new speakers. What a production! And then you are bringing Kate as well later! Oh man!
This is one of those albums that is simply perfect in every single way. Here they married their tunefulness with the desire to experiment. The two albums after Colour Of Spring do lose a bit in the tunes department albeit upping the ante in the experimental department.

A magical band. I was privileged to audition for the band back in the 1980s and jammed with them in the studio for 20 minutes non-stop creating wondrous sounds, but nothing compared to what they were to produce in their twilight. I later worked with an artist who was strongly influenced by them, Cocteau Twins, Jacques Brel, Tim Buckley and Scott Walker: f you can track it down, take a listen to Waiting Rooms by Simon Warner. I think it will interest you...
This is gorgeous. The more I hear Hollis' voice the more I love it. Bit like a cross between Bowie & Anthony Newley (look him up). His self titled album was superb - The Daily Planet's my favourite. R.I.P. Mark. Can't believe you're gone.
I see this video is getting on for a year old now, but it's worth mentioning that there are actually 2 bass players on this track. Alan Gorrie, the great bassist for Average White Band, plays electric bass, but JustJP is playing air bass along to a double bass part being played by Danny Thompson, the great bass player for 1960's folk-rock supergroup Pentangle, et al. And the organ is being played by Steve Winwood, organist for Traffic, et al. The Colour of Spring is an essential album for my money, a contender for the Top 10 of "underrated" albums, and this track alone opens up a network of rabbit holes for a channel such as this to get digging into some amazing British popular music.
Boy am I glad you're listening to this. This is maybe one of the few discs I'd bring on an island. And if you listen to Spirit of Eden a few times, it will grow on you - believe me.

It is sharing other peoples experiences of listening to groups for the first time. Groups that I started enjoying over the past decades. What a great reaction. Used to listen to their albums driving back late at night when iIfirst joined the RAF and they've stayed with me ever since. One of my favourite songs is the Party's Over from their first album. A band that burned bright but fast RIP Mark Hollis.
Talk Talk has one of the most consistently fantastic catalogues in popular music. 5 albums, increasingly abstract, all of them masterpieces. Starting with new wave and synth pop with 'The Party's Over' and 'It's My Life'; progressing into art rock with this album; and then building upon the ambient flavour of "Chameleon Day/Time It's Time" from this record, Mark Hollis and Tim Friese-Greene practically invented the Post-Rock genre with 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock'.

Talking about guest musicians here, you have David Rhodes on guitar (Peter Gabrel) in Life's What you Make It, Morris Pert on percs (Peter Gabriel ) on most notably Living In Another World and Robbie McIntosh from The Pretenders on guitar and dobro... in addition to Winwood of course. This was a seminal album from the 80s. Not as popular as others in the mainstream but absolutely essential. I'm new to your channel but, if you want to hear McIntosh on one of the most memorable tracks and guitar solos in the 80s, check out Middle of The Road from the Pretenders album Learning to Crawl.

Also hope you check out the two that followed. I never got around to them even though I wanted to, so this way we can discover those together. There are some albums that are so special or perfect that I have trouble listening to more from the band even if I'm interested, and that happened with this one. Now after all these years I'm ready for more Talk Talk
The DVD Live in Montreux is a complete eye-opener, in a live setting it really hits hard! Give it Up, in particular is soooooo intense. And what a voice!
That's variophon in the middle, an instrument that can imitate different wind instruments... I always wonder why almost nobody else has used it. Talk Talk really got the best out of it on this album and the equally stunning b-side "It's Getting Late in the Evening" - I know you did the whole album but believe it or not, that song is every bit as good as the songs that made the LP The strings are from a mellotron! Rick Wright from Pink Floyd praised this song and album :)
Guaranteed viewer right here if you continue to do this album and then Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock! :) I had a feeling you'd like this... The flugen horn you mention is actually a "Variphon" which is an electronic wind synthesizer, played a bit like a clarinet with piano style keys.
Talk Talk is one of my favorite bands of all time. Sadly overlooked back in the 80s but their music has been influential to bands like Mogwai and Radiohead. I hope you check out more of their music. Just watching the joy and awe in your reactions made me happy. A great song from this album is 'Life's What You Make It' which has stellar bass that you might appreciate.
Well, you made my day! Acoustic bass by Danny Thompson, a giant of British folk/jazz - check him out with John Martyn on his masterpieces, Bless the Weather and Solid Air. Based on your reaction to this one, you'll probably enjoy the rest of The Color of Spring, but you'll hear a couple of songs that are somewhat announcing their future albums, Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock. Hollis said in an interview that his quest was for less and less notes, using silence when needed (something Miles Davis had said about his own playing), which led him to the minimalist approach of his one and only solo album, after which he quit, having fully expressed himself. Funny that you are covering Kate Bush right now: she often said how much she was a fan of Talk Talk, and of Spirit of Eden in particular. They're a major influence on Radiohead and Elbow: Guy Garvey (of Elbow) and Phil Selway (of Radiohead) actually did a BBC radio special celebrating the 30th anniversary release of Spirit of Eden, which they also consider their masterpiece. I admit that it took me awhile to get into Eden - not that it's gentle or "new agy", it's post-rock made with a jazzy attitude. I listened to it thinking i'd find another It's My Life or Life's What You Make It, but they were long past their pop days.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Justin. I can’t add any more as you’ve said it all already, as have many of the comments, suffice to say you’ve probably just played one of the most quintessentially greatest albums ever. We will all miss Mark Hollis terribly and that hope that one day we might have had another album to look forward to, so,so sad. If your curious though watch the ‘Live at Montreux’ ‘86 concert. I love the intensity and the musicianship of all the members giving it 110% especially Mark Hollis, he gives 200%. You’ll find it here on TH-cam and I promise you, you won’t be disappointed, Stay well now. 🙏
A brilliant song by one of the most underappreciated bands ever. The production and arrangement is very original est terribly effective at the same time.
Loved your facial expressions as the music twisted and turned and surprised you. But... you got it, you didn't miss a thing. For the record Talk Talk are unique and masterful in their art. The dog's bollox mate.
I haven't heard this sknce for over 30 years. Memories blow my mind. English countryside. Studying at university. Working om the side whenever. Beautiful girlfriend i left the country in the 90s ans worked in Asia since 1997 amd long after. This memory trip sends me to 1991 clear as day. I had this album in the late 80s after also loving living in another world from 86 and the earliee stuff.
@@Katehowe3010 You know me too well! (I've been following JP for a while now. I love almost all forms of prog rock, which features here a lot, and simply delighted he's moving into Talk Talk territory.)
@@Katehowe3010 You've only just made me go look up "Mike Wolfe" (because I've never seen anyone do a full listen/review of "Laughing Stock") and discovered his first name is actually Dean. What a chase that was! Anyway, I think the first comment you responded to me was on a DCCookster video back when his output was a lot more consistent (I unsubscribed when he started getting all angsty and unreliable). And of course I remember who you are!
Welcome to another classic British band! So underrated, but so brilliant. Life's What You Make It has to be one of the best pop songs ever recorded... but take your time getting there, because the rest of their stuff is great, too. Enjoy!
The bass you describe at around 0:10:00 is the double bass played by the excellent Danny Thompson, later in the track he is joined on fretless bass by Paul Webb. (Danny Thompson was also involved with other Talk Talk track and albums and Sylvian's Secrets Of The Beehive). Great to see your enthousiasm, makes me re-listen to these tracks! :)
I've stumbled upon you recently. ELP and now Talk Talk, who I always felt became a neo-prog band about the time of Colour of Spring... you're spoiling us. You're becoming my favourite "reaction" streamer.
My first listen to them. Love them so far. I have an appreciation for bands that aren’t typical! I think these guys qualify! Good start to Saturday for me.
Talk Talk one of these amazing diamonds from the 80s. Mark Hollis and this pinch of melancholy in his voice - wonderful. Please check out the solo work of Robert Plant. May be "Big log". It is between rock and pop and sounds surprising.
Woooooaaaaah!!!!!! One of my favorite bands!!!! Oh man!! You’ve just upped your game big time! Talk Talk is soooo great! Thank you. Haven’t even watched your review yet but I’m sooooo excited!!!!!
Ah yes! Talk Talk, I love this band, and this album is perfect. You can try all of this album, you can try Life's what you make it ;-) In fact talk Talk is one of the most underrated bands from the 80-90s. They began with pop and end with art rock, Mark Hollis influenced the sound to be less and less busy, letting space and silence come in, for the best. The albums followed with less and less, and with Talk Talk, "less is more " (Mies Van der Rohe) is a mantra that fitted perfectly. You remember certainly the sound of pop of "Talk talk" and "Such a shame"... but the more they grew up, the better they become. Enjoy, seeing you loving that song that much, YOU HAVE to do the whole album and the next one. All Talk Talk is briliant anyway. Rest in peace Mark. For your information, on this album Robbie Robertson (Paul Mc Cartney) and David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel) played on.
When I first got this album and looked at the credits, my jaw dropped when I saw that Danny Thompson (of Pentangle, John Martyn, etc) plays double bass on this song. This bass run he does at 4:37 stuns me every time.
Love the first album. Great voice! This track is simply stunning, made up of bits and pieces into something wholesome! You can see the band members gradually getting into the groove and then rocking it.
@@Katehowe3010 Well just off the top my head, Tears for Fears. Depeche Mode, The Eurythmics, The Smiths, Fine Young Cannibals, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Simply Red, Happy Mondays, Yazoo, Wham, Stone Roses, Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Deacon Blue, Style Council, Squeeze, Wet Wet Wet, ABC.
Hey Justin My Man!!! WOW WOW WOW AGAIN!!! Never heard of this band before and I must admit- I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS!! JUST AMAZING!!! Well almost completely! I never saw them in show but I love this album. You need to listen to it from beginning to end. The voice if the signer will become haunting after a while. I think I have mentioned that before!
If you play this from vinyl on a decent set you will not believe how big the soundstage is and how spacious it sounds. This is in my top 5 of best sounding albums of all time. And artistically one of the best ever too.
This was the album that saw Talk Talk transition out of their pop roots to develop their status as a favourite cult band. Amazing production and instrumentation made this a hugely popular album amongst audiophiles back in the day, as it it made all sound systems sound amazing. Spot on with your reference to albums from David Sylvian and the Blue Nile. All classic 1980s albums sharing a similar aesthetic and production values. You might just have to do the whole album JP, thumbs up!!
I have always loved Mark's voice. From the same general time period, I have the same reaction to Paul Weller's work with Style Council. Check out "My Ever Changing Moods" and "Shout To The Top" from them to get the idea.
Best quote ever from Mark Hollis about music " Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note, y'know. And that, it's as simple as that really. And don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it.”
Thanksgiving indeed! This is just the beginning of this journey, Justin! take your time. Paul Buchanan is Blue Nile's singer, btw. Talk Talk did five albums. none of them alike, but transitioned well into the next one. I basically grew from them, and with them. You can't go wrong with any Talk Talk, album or song. Just take your time. Many say they started a genre. Tim Friese-Greene essentially became Mark Hollis' writing partner.
I'm so glad that you finally reacted to Talk Talk!!! The whole album is just amazing, and the ones that you listened before are more soft and experimental indeed

The joy on your face while you listened to this song was awesome! It's a great album all the way through so I hope you end up sharing your first listen to each song. Also hope you check out the two that followed. I never got around to them even though I wanted to, so this way we can discover those together.
There are some albums that are so special or perfect that I have trouble listening to more from the band even if I'm interested, and that happened with this one. Now after all these years I'm ready for more Talk Talk
Ty Wolfhart! This one was really good!
Talk Talk really got the best out of it on this album and the equally stunning b-side "It's Getting Late in the Evening" - I know you did the whole album but believe it or not, that song is every bit as good as the songs that made the LP
The strings are from a mellotron!
Rick Wright from Pink Floyd praised this song and album :)
My favourite band of all time, Mark hollis RIP
Guaranteed viewer right here if you continue to do this album and then Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock! :) I had a feeling you'd like this...
The flugen horn you mention is actually a "Variphon" which is an electronic wind synthesizer, played a bit like a clarinet with piano style keys.
Ty 1MB!
Ty so much June!
A great album. The 80s sometimes produced wonders. The great bass by Danny Thompson is glorious.
Ty so much AJ!
@@Katehowe3010 TY 🙏
@@JustJP Thanks Justin, but please be sure to check out the concert when you’ve time, it’s just amazing! Mind you I’m incredibly biased. 🙏
This is from one of Rick Wright’s (Pink Floyd) top 10 favourite albums.
Welcome to the World of Mark Hollis,RIP .Music Genius❤️🙋♂️🔥 Songs = I don‘ t belive you, i belive you, a.o.
A brilliant song by one of the most underappreciated bands ever. The production and arrangement is very original est terribly effective at the same time.
I'd agree wholeheartedly, they are vastly underappreciated.
Yes! I can't wait till you get to their last two albums. Pure brilliance, well ahead of the curve.
Magical song
Welcome to another classic British band! So underrated, but so brilliant. Life's What You Make It has to be one of the best pop songs ever recorded... but take your time getting there, because the rest of their stuff is great, too. Enjoy!
Worth reading Phill Brown's book 'Are We Still Rolling?' wherein he talks about producing late-stage Talk Talk
Ty Yorva!
I've stumbled upon you recently. ELP and now Talk Talk, who I always felt became a neo-prog band about the time of Colour of Spring... you're spoiling us. You're becoming my favourite "reaction" streamer.
Well thank you😄
You loving Talk Talk, and then name dropping TWO David Sylvian masterpieces deserves a subscribe!!!
Haha ty CC :)
Love this song and album, did not listen to much else summer of 1986.
Same!
Wore out the cassette that year!!!
Lifes what you make it. - great tune.
10:03 - It was an acoustic bass - A Contrabass (or 'Double bass'). Quite rare in pop but sometimes (at least in 2 famous songs from that era)
Ah ty yw!
@@JustJP Try next their 'I don't believe in you'. Some fine guitar
Danny Thompson played on DS Secrets of the Beehive
JP - you find the best music other people miss. Another great find. The whole dang album. This is what we used to listen to before we had Radiohead.
Ty!
one of the most underrated songs and album ever, this one is a masterpiece.
Realy a masterpieces!
Once again, what a great song.. Will be playing this album all week. Thanks JP
Enjoy!
Keep in mind that Colour of Spring is a full album experience - not just a collection of songs!
The album this is from is the bridge between their poppy early days and the ambient ones that followed. Great choice, great reaction!
Ty!
My first listen to them. Love them so far. I have an appreciation for bands that aren’t typical! I think these guys qualify! Good start to Saturday for me.
Glad you enjoyed it!
HHa ty MV!
Ah yes! Talk Talk, I love this band, and this album is perfect. You can try all of this album, you can try Life's what you make it ;-)
In fact talk Talk is one of the most underrated bands from the 80-90s.
I haven't heard this for a while. I had forgotten how good the production was. Amazing sound. Thanks for the review. 😎😍😀
When I first got this album and looked at the credits, my jaw dropped when I saw that Danny Thompson (of Pentangle, John Martyn, etc) plays double bass on this song. This bass run he does at 4:37 stuns me every time.
i respect you for just listening and not interrupting. great reaction and excellent first choice of song.
Ty Chilly!
Love the first album. Great voice! This track is simply stunning, made up of bits and pieces into something wholesome! You can see the band members gradually getting into the groove and then rocking it.
Talk Talk were a wonderful band. They suffered from being around at a time when great British bands were cropping up almost every week.
What a great time for music!
@@Katehowe3010
Well just off the top my head, Tears for Fears. Depeche Mode, The Eurythmics, The Smiths, Fine Young Cannibals, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Simply Red, Happy Mondays, Yazoo, Wham, Stone Roses, Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Deacon Blue, Style Council, Squeeze, Wet Wet Wet, ABC.
Those tender little voices....it chokes me up. Love this song!
Yes!
Haven't listened to this album in succession in many years. Almost forgot how good it was (still is).
Hey Justin My Man!!! WOW WOW WOW AGAIN!!! Never heard of this band before and I must admit- I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS!! JUST AMAZING!!! Well almost completely! Was not really feeling the children's vocals here. Didn't really understand it here! But everything else- WOW!! The vocals were beautiful!!! This sounded like a mix of- Simply Red and Tears For Fears!! Anyone else agree with me? Looks like they have a nice following from the comment section today!! Really looking forward to hearing more myself!!! Just so cool and enjoyable!!! Great beat with horns and strings too!!! VERY INTERESTING!! SO SMOOTH!!! Thank you sir!! This is a great weekend of music for sure!!! See you tomorrow my friend!! YOUR #1 AZ FAN MICHAEL😽😸😊😊
Ty Michael! I can hear a little of TfF
I never saw them in show but I love this album. You need to listen to it from beginning to end. The voice if the signer will become haunting after a while.
You mentioned Pentangle in the list of what people recommend, If you listen to them, don't forget also John Renbourn, The Lady and the Unicorn, My Johnny Was A Shoemaker /Westron Wynde /Scarborough Fair.
Ty! I think I may!
Great review of a great song and band. Really interesting blend of sounds... they were one of the many 80s bands that pushed the envelope.
Ty Kev!
I adore this track. Great choice, JP
Ty!
Love that!
Ty Dell, im definitely gonna do more
I'm so glad that you finally reacted to Talk Talk!!! The whole album is just amazing, and the ones that you listened before are more soft and experimental indeed
Love this song! There's other good ones from this album. But my favorite are their two last albums! :D
Always liked this band. Singer Mark Hollis sadly died in February 2019, aged 64.
