What you don't realize is that Crass is possibly the most important band in punk because without them there would be no anarcho punk, no crust, folk punk, political grind, none of anything that followed that either. Crass created much of what is now the staples, what's become cliche. They are the reason punk kids today wear all black cloths with hand silk screened patches sewn on with dental floss stitching. They are the reason we have diy punk record labels and distros. The origins of the giant homemade banners on the stages, the origins of the massive liner note booklet filled with information. It all started with this band. There were bands before but none were serious about the politics, it was just empty shock slogans to sell records. Crass took it seriously and created a movement.
Most anarchist punks go through a Crass phase where they listen to tons of Crass, and every band on Crass Records, and the hands associated with them, becoming obsessed. It's a phase that's almost cliche.
To people not into punk they don't get how big if an influence Crass was, and still is to this day, and to casual punk fans they may not even have heard of Crass (most list off bands like DOA, DK, Op Ivy, and Black Flag), but to anyone hardcore into the anarcho or DIY scene there's no band as important as Crass.
If you want more Crass I'd suggest something off Penis Envy, perhaps We're Next Columbus, or Systematic Death, because it will sound very different than this.
If you want more early anarchist punk from the UK I'd strongly suggest Chumbawamba's first 2 albums Pictures Of Starving Children Sell Records, and Nevermind The Ballots. I really loved the song Unilever. The band Zounds would be another great early anarcho band, I'd suggest the song Did He Jump.
If you want anarchists punk that's a bit different but also very influential
The bands Amebix, Aus-Rotten, and Nausea are the beginning of what we now call Crust Punk.
For Nausea I'd suggest the song CyberGod
For Aus-Rotten either Capital Punishment, or Xenophobia
And for Amebix the song Arise, or The Darkets Hour.

Crass were easily the only real Punk band because they had a genuine unique integrity. There were 8 members in the Crass collective. There were two women who also sang and Crass released an Lp called "Penis Envy" with just those two women singing vocals on it. well worth checking out as it is the most musical of all Crass releases, check out also Reality Asylum by Crass, first time I heard it 40 years ago I was 14 and it scared the shit out of me when I hear it now days it still has the same impact.

When the first ep "Farce" was released I spotted it in a record shop and was impressed enough by the art work alone to buy the ep. I had never heard of the band at that point and couldnt believe how extraordinary they were when I got home and put in on the record player. It was an LP on a 7 inch played at 45rpm, I think there were at least 12 songs on Farce some songs only 30 seconds long. Its amazing what that band could achieve in 30 seconds on vinyl. This song sums up my views on God, Queen, and Country. What sets this one apart in my mind is the switch up at the end where they actually give positive steps to take to change your life, rather than just complain about how your life sucks. "If the programme's not the one you one, get up, turn off the set." Most people simply switch the channel, not turn off the TV and stop watching completely . Go do something else. "The s*** we have to climb through is the s*** we choose to take." Don't like the garbage, find a way out. Every time I get down on situations I am in, I go back to this song for a reminder to stop accepting the situation I am in, and change it.

Crass were an anarcho-punk collective who supported, recorded and produced many other like minded artists who would otherwise have been lost to obscurity. Penny Rimbaud (drummer) and Gee Vaucher (singer) continue to perform and record and still live at Dial House farm, an Elizabethan property than Penny bought and in the late ‘60s saving it from the fate of so many other historic properties that were falling into ruin around that time. Dial House has always had an open door policy for travellers, meaning visitors are welcome to stay and break bread in return for helping around the farm whenever possible but a little notice would be appreciated especially considering Penny’s age and associated health concerns (he’s 77 now). Another great pick and a trip down memory lane for me! Crass were truly their own deal. I had anarchopunk friends who would sing the albums cover to cover. They were definitely part of the cult. I was more of a nihilist/pragmatist type, we bought guns and got high and waited for the end of the world. Still bought leather and ate meat. Crucifix is the only American band who I believe were on Crass's Corpus Cristi record label. They were incredible!

If you want another great british anarcho band suggestion, Rudimentary Peni is a band you can't go wrong with. Signed on Crass' record label back in the early 80's. Nick Blinko, the lead singer, suffering from schizophrenia, they have some really intersting lyrics for the listener to digest. Their songs are mostly quite short but worth checking out! here is a good but short song from them . Rudimentary Peni - Sacrifice

Hey my friends. I have been a crass fan since a young kid and came across your video while listening to music on TH-cam and had to check it out. Glad you featured such an obscure band and had a positive perspective on the overall message. There is so much more to discover although you are off to a good start with this song. These perspectives are surely relevant in 2020, US or UK. We all need to stick together with where we are rapidly heading. The system is failing in real time and times will likely be tough. Good luck everyone, Stay safe and take care of each other. PS. First TH-cam comment

For many people my age, Crass was a political awakening. They made you realise there was a whole system designed to enslave you without your knowledge. Crass educated me, inspired me, opened my eyes to new ideologies and they still do. Probably the most important British band.

Cool reaction video. In terms of UK punk or really punk from anywhere, CRASS really had a completely unique sound and their political stances were really influential in the early 80s, especially in Britain. As a teenager in the 80s, this band was extremely important to me in shaping my political identity. This was probably a good entry point for them. Not all of their songs are quite as catchy. All of their songs tend to be pretty different from one another.

Listening to Crass since 79 and seeing them for the first time in 1980 influenced my outlook on life in so many ways, but at the core of what they were saying IMHO is 'try to be a decent human being, treat others as you would like to be treated and don't believe everything make your own mind up'. Even more important now the state of the world at the moment.

Just discovered your channel - on a bit of a reaction binge 🥰 - I'm australian (and white), born in '81 so I grew up with Aus and UK punk, obviously I know and like plenty of north american punk bands, but when I think of that golden punk era I definitely think of the UK punk scene - including Crass of course. It's really interesting to hear the US perspective, where you're obviously much more familiar with the US punk sound.
Would love to see youse react to X-Ray Spex - really you could pick any song from their album 'Germfree Adolescents' and not go wrong, it has to be one of the most iconic punk (or anything really) records of all time. Poly Styrene (rest in power) was truly one of a kind
