Push loading vs Self loading | Caterpillar 651 single engine

  • Against popular belief, single engine scrapers can indeed self load...they're just super slow.
    However, it's obviously not as efficient as being push loaded by a dozer since they're only front wheel drive---but if needed, a fleet of singles can make due for bit without a push cat if the conditions are right.
    There are various reasons why a push cat may be down briefly (Getting serviced or a small repair) In one of those cases where it's only for a short time, you can at least keep some production going.
    Dirt must have a certain compaction and consistency (not too hard or too soft) and without rocks.
    They will also need a very long cut as they will only be able to cut an inch or two over a very long stretch. Oh and you MUST have very experienced operators to avoid wheel spin.

    even in the new ones, it looks like the operator in these scrapers are being beaten all around in that cab.

    Self loading will make a hand out of a driver. It may be slow but they are still moving dirt. As my father told me many times, if you think that’s too slow, get a shovel and wheel barrow.

      They’re Operators. Not drivers. Dirt jobs are usually bid by the cubic yard. The more yards you move, and the faster you move them, is how you make a profit. Self loading single engine scrapers, Is like watching a monkey fuck a football. It’s ridiculous! Time is money on a dirt spread! If you aren’t going to use a push cat, get some push pulls , or paddle wheel self loading scraper. This is so hard to watch! Wasted motion.

    Front drive scrapers are not made to self load. 21s and up. Paddle wheels are the exception. However the reason they use pushcats to load with is one is easier on the scrapers notwithstanding the shorter the cycle time the more yardage moved. Pushcats will pay for themselves 10 times over. Copy over

    Simialr to what Socalearthmovers show only they push load their scrapers with a D10N.D10R in tandem

    How much cheaper is a single engine vs a twin engine scraper? There has to be a major cost justification to buy a single vs a double engine scraper. Can the single engine scrapers work in tandem like the twin engine?

    Looks like a new center cutting bit on the scrapers would help them load easier.

    Might be worth using that 11 to scarify the top 3 feet some? Then maybe scrape a load?

    • @pushysix
      @pushysix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah just a single shallow rip spaced far apart would be best. The scrapers need the hard packed dirt for traction. If it's too loose they'll spin out a lot easier

    Would it be mainly ground conditions that determine if it’s better suited to 651’s with a push cat or 657’s?

    • @pushysix
      @pushysix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, ground conditions is one of the biggest factors. Also depends on the length of the cut, a push cat can load a scraper in a much shorter distance

    It sure looks like the scraper operator has it in nutruel & the cat is doing all the pushing. I can tell when a scraper operator has it in gear helpping pulling the bowl through the cut , when a push assist dozer is put into play it loads faster & it boils over the side boards

    • @Gavin84w
      @Gavin84w 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      should have them in 2nd gear at 1/4 to half throttle, this provides enough flow for hydraulics and drives the drive tyres over obstacles instead of being shoved into them

  • @leeross38
    @leeross38 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You cant compare a wheel barrow to a scraper. Ridiculous comparison. Having saud that scrapers make all the money on a spread. The faster they run the more money for the contractor. Plain and simple
