Thanks guys for watching!!! Tell us what you think about this disc brake conversion, and if it lived up to you're expectations when we told you we were upgrading the Mustangs brakes.
Thanks! I'm pretty excited to test them out. Sometimes you can find really nice factory parts for a decent price but sometimes you need to go with an aftermarket setup
I have always wanted to try wilwood brakes on one of my hot rods. I just found a thread on how to fit 2, 4, or 6, piston brakes from newer model chevys on gbodys (elco, caballero, malibu, tempest, gto, monte carlos....) Z06 brakes here we come!!
My budget build on a 67 Cougar was to use Mustang Steve 05 Caliper adapter kit. Sourced the remainder parts as inexpensive as possible. Had the original hoses adapted to fit the Cougar's hard lines. The Cougar had power drums, so I already had the booster.I bought a disc brake master from the parts house for under $30. This package is way better performing than stock disc. It costs less than $500. One thing I like about the Wilwood, is that you can use 14" wheels. I have 17" Centerline MMMB/635 wheels, 17x8 front and 17x9 rear.
Nice video, been watching many of these conversions and upgrades today, yours one of the best and clearest! May do a drum to disc conversion on my 64 Ranchero, you show it is not rocket science but has do's and don'ts and tips. Shop will likely do it since I don't have a "my shop" anymore in my new house. You show it's a brief job, and not to get ripped for 15 hrs of Labor charge; of course I'll get estimate. Product looks nice too if I can get for my car type. Got nostalgic for my 70 Mustang (yours 69) which I sold about 5 year ago!!
This vid and the master cylinder one is great. Helped me with my ordering for the planned upgrade. Luckily the importer spotted that I needed the specific mustang master cylinder. Parts take ages to get to NZ so need to get it right. Thanks.
hey mate I am here in NZ too. Could you please tell me what parts you ordered and where from? also how was the fitment/ performance. I have a 67 mustang that I want to upgrade brakes on
@@SA-xu1xi I ordered the Wilwood brake kit 140-13343 along with the line kit 220-12168, and Master cylinder 261-13272, I went through Cardwells who are a WW distributor. I went through them as they helped with ensuring i got the correct components and i thought it would make it easier with the freight. They were really good. Haven't fitted yet as only just arrived, but spoke to the certify today and he mentioned that the bolts supplied for the holding the plate on aren't compliant so need to get some different ones. One thing make sure they will fit within the wheels you have. I checked mine on a friends car who had a same sized set up. Fingers crossed it all works as planned Sounds like there are a few gotchas around the certification process Nothing major which an experienced Mechanic wouldn't know . We where going to look at doing ourselves but the cylinder part looks a bit tricky and we don't have the stores like the US who can make the lines for you, so now plan to take it to someone
Awesome video I like how you explain everything. I have 17 inch wheels which wilwood kit would you suggest? I would really like to here your thoughts on it. Thanks
How long should it take to complete a 67 mustang with disc in front and drum in the rear( to convert to disc all around)? Thanks. And great video by the way!!
I am really enjoying this series! I just bought a '69 Mustang Convertable. I believe what you are doing is the way I would like to go. Are you going to convert the rear to disc as well?
When I was in High School a guy had a '64 with a 409 with 4-speed. He, name was Willoughby, was "NOTORIUS" in several cities near where I lived in Glendale, CA!!! LOL.
Hey Guys. Really enjoy the vids. Just a note on your install. I see on the Wilwood intsall video that they install the caliper on the front side of the rotor. Not sure if it matters, just thought I might point it out.
Just wondering now that you have had the disc set up with stock drum/drum master cylinder(no booster and no proportional valve) do you notice any uneven brake wear between the front and back brakes?
I have never actually heard of them before. I was just looking into it and it seems like it would be a decent setup. I am pretty curious and if you decide to do it let me know how it works.
I received the Scarebird brackets last week, just getting the rest of the recommended components. I will get everything painted and install in the next couple of weeks. so far so good.
I just installed same calipers on my Rx7 1980 with rear drums. Pedal feel soft, should I install wilwood residual line for the rear drums or install a master cylinder 1" bore.
I installed the same brakes on my 69 mustang, You have the caliper on the back side of the rotor, I installed mine the same because I watched your video. Now Welwood shows them installed forward of the rotor and all the other videos I watched show them on the front of the rotor. But most of the videos were 6 puck brakes, or a different year car. What is the correct way?? hope we have it correct. Rick
I was confused as well but the instructions have it on the opposite way of this video. Thats why the brake line looks wierd when turning. Im installing mine facing the front bumper at the moment
Bought the exact brake kit you listed for my '68. The kit states that I need to drill and tap the spindle to 3/8-24 UNF for '68-69. Your video shows you using 4 bolts, washers and nuts to mount the caliper bracket to the spindle. Did you use the OEM spindle or did you purchase smaller bolts and nuts to avoid have to tap the spindle?
For anyone finding this comment now, DON'T use smaller bolts. Follow the instructions, and either tap the original disc-brake spindle for 3/8 bolts, or use an original drum-brake spindle which already has 4 properly-sized holes.
Unless you're running the car in auto x, track or your car is close to 4,000 lbs... The 4 piston breaks work well, when set up properly. It all depends on budget.
I just drove it yesterday and it was a ton of fun. It hasn't had a ton of work lately because Taylor just started a new job and his schedule has been rough but soon we will be focusing on it pretty hard.
Thanks guys for watching!!! Tell us what you think about this disc brake conversion, and if it lived up to you're expectations when we told you we were upgrading the Mustangs brakes.
They look awesome!
Very nice kit. Gonna stop on a dime. Very good explanation about bigger factory OEM brakes being scarce for this build.
Thanks! I'm pretty excited to test them out. Sometimes you can find really nice factory parts for a decent price but sometimes you need to go with an aftermarket setup

Nice set up, does this kit fit a 1966 mustang? Thanks
Just watched the video- Wilwood owes you a commission. Just ordered up the kit for my 69 Mach
Made that look easy! Got a 70 Mach 1 and want to do this.

Had to run the Hose opposite as the line would hit the tire on the frame as well . Just a note thanks for the video . 1970 mach 1
Can you post a picture how you ran the brake lines, because I have the same problem.
Another great video! I really like your work and how you leave the flubs in. Well done.

Great video, very helpful as I am getting ready to install this same disc brake system on my 1969 Mustang Mach 1
How it went with the kit

Awesome video, Thanks, going to look for a wilwood kit for my 71' Torino
Dude I like how you take a hammer to everything that resists improvement lmao

The Wilwood 4 piston kit I installed on a 1969 Mustang located the caliper on the front of the spindle, versus yours is behind
Mine as well

Do you know a kit like this so i can upgrade both the front and rear wheels to 5 lug disk brakes on my 67 mustang?
Can you guys please do a video on replacing all the brake lines thanks!
Hypoxi i We have a video on flaring the brake lines coming out soon. I will be making brake lines when we do the master cylinder as well.
Lol one more reason I love my cougar love the videos btw

rablwo Thanks for watching! We are planning to do the rear brakes but we wanted to wait until we figure out what rear end to use.
Ever thought about getting a ‘65 impala? LEMME TELL YA, THEY ARE PURRRRTY🇺🇸❤️
I have actually been trying to convince my wife to let me buy an Impala.

Does it need the Dust Sheild to the brackets?
Could you do one for the 67 9" Ford rear drum to disc please? With Wilwood, not sure it will be a Budget Build. lol But are worth it for the quality.
Did you change the master cylinder and add a brake booster with pedal for that kit?
Great video, I'm getting ready to start on my 1970 coupe and was considering the Scarebird disc conversion route. Any thoughts?
I have never actually heard of them before. I was just looking into it and it seems like it would be a decent setup. I am pretty curious and if you decide to do it let me know how it works.
Will do. @@BudgetBuildGarage

That is awesome man. I am really interested in how it comes out. Thanks for the update!
so? does the kit include two rotors and calipers, or just one ?? do you have to buy two kits ?
Where do they find these balloon heads
I just installed same calipers on my Rx7 1980 with rear drums. Pedal feel soft, should I install wilwood residual line for the rear drums or install a master cylinder 1" bore.

Do you have a video to convert rear drums to disc.
Good job
its a good video, but you should never use teflon tape on brake fittings.
Why not
Bought the exact brake kit you listed for my '68.
Hey man I ran into the same problem, did you end up getting smaller bolts or getting a different spindle?
For anyone finding this comment now, DON'T use smaller bolts. Follow the instructions, and either tap the original disc-brake spindle for 3/8 bolts, or use an original drum-brake spindle which already has 4 properly-sized holes.
nice vid
When can we expect more of the Mustang build?
Soon actually. I want to do a quick tune up and road trip it somewhere in it. Then it will be time to do some more cool stuff to it.
I thought the brake fluid would eat the teflon tape and get gummed up in the lines?
It will over time. Don't use it.
Only four piston calipers on front brakes? As soon as I realized how small were these calipers I swapped for 6 pistons
Unless you're running the car in auto x, track or your car is close to 4,000 lbs... The 4 piston breaks work well, when set up properly. It all depends on budget.
What is going on with the bus?
I just drove it yesterday and it was a ton of fun. It hasn't had a ton of work lately because Taylor just started a new job and his schedule has been rough but soon we will be focusing on it pretty hard.
I really want to see that car do a burnout
I really want to do some burnouts in it!
Teflon tape on brake lines? I can’t believe how absolutely ignorant that is. People watch these videos and actually think you know what you’re doing.
Same with the red loctite
HAH NOOB, you put Teflon tape on a flared fitting? Just to waste your time?
Red loctite too
