Fallout is set in an alternate history, after WW2 things went a bit different, the culture stagnated so music/tv was stuck like in 50s/60s, and microelectronics weren't discovered to about 2050AD, but they had advanced nuclear tech way beyond ours. China and USA fought a 15 or so year long war that finally went nuclear in 2077AD, HUGE amounts of mostly "small" nukes were used, that and so many cars etc being nuclear powered caused huge amounts of fallout Ghouls (the red skull guy is one) are humans who mutated due to extreme radiation they can live for centuries, resistant to disease, drugs, immune to radiation. Lots of mutants were made by radiation but actually by "FEV" a weapon the US military made to create "super soldiers" and animals as living weapons....it went *badly* wrong! The game has tons of dark snarky satire, social commentary on corporations etc :)
Aliens are in the game, but mostly as running gag, they're not a serious faction in the stories. The dog companion is traditionally called "dogmeat" in the series, I wonder if it'll be called the same in the show.
Fallout New Vegas is the most like Skyrim with many factions and a lot of ways to play the game like Skyrim. I highly recommend New Vegas if you like Skyrim.

Honestly the more I hear about the game, the more intrigued I am about the show
I loved the games, my favorite franchise. I actually like fallout 3 and New Vegas the best. I bet you’ll love the games
