He had a flair for fashion with an education in French Literature (not journalism and certainly not fashion) and he finessed his way into that circle. I'm betting the true reason he didn't anchor himself better is because deep down inside, he was simply proud to be there, and likely kicked over and stepped on real journalists/fashion credentialed persons.

@@ssatpath You're flat out wrong. You know nothing about Andre Talley true history at Vogue. It's you who haven't done your research. I have. Her question was specifically, "What did he give?" Nothing. Just ask Edward Enniful, Elaine Welteroth, and Chioma Nnadi how much influence Talley had on their careers and whether he actually reached back and helped young and coming black editors or fashion designers. Andre was for Andre. Black people got nothing out of Mr. Talley's rise. There are countless stories of his harsh treatment of black designers and refusing to feature black fashion designers in Vogue during his time as editor. In fact, in his books he admits that the criticism was justified, "Looking back, I could have done much more." In many ways, Andre Talley is a mirror image of Tamron Hall who years ago said, "whenever a black woman comes up to me and asks me how hard it must have been for me as a black woman, I turned them around and tell them I don't want to hear that. Everybody's had it hard." That's right before NBC fired her and replace here with white FOX personality Megyn Kelly. That's why it was disingenuous for Mrs. Hall or anyone to say anything about racism w/her firing since for so long she acted like racism didn't exist accept when the good white folk came for her. Same for Andre LEON Talley. They twins.
Andre Talley is a black man who derived a sense of privilege being the only black man in a white room and when that white room turned on him, chewed him up and spit him out, he was left with nothing, which explains why he died penniless while being evicted from a house he did not own. Fashion is façade and Mr. Tally had plenty of it. Black people must get out of the habit of being infatuated with symbolism over substance. I am done celebrating a few black people who managed to get chosen by a few white people. Andre Talley lived his life breaking his neck to be chose by white people and he forsake at lot black people while doing it. This is nothing to be celebrated. Such behavior is to be detested. Like all window dressing, racial mannequins can be removed at random. Such was the case of Andre LEON Talley.

For me, with my modest lifestyle in a smaller city, and now working from home with minimal wardrobe and transportation expenses, a decade of earning $300,000/year would set me up for life. For a Vogue editor living in Manhattan and having to keep up appearances -- not for vanity, but to be credible in his field -- it's not nearly enough. I'm sure he got lots of freebies along the way, but he needed to earn much more to assure his financial future. Always being an employee and not starting his own ventures also limited his earning power.

But, just being a part of the crowd didn't make him equal with the crowd and we see that now through his revelation that he didn't have equal pay. Same ole story....and it is sad. Many of them wanted him around for the eloquence and knowledge of fashion that he had and the editorial descriptions he so brilliantly wrote which...guess what....put more money in their pockets. Did anyone think to commission him off the gains of their product from his glowing remarks. Probably NOT. It is a shame, disrespectful of this man's talent and quite disgusting. Leon can't blame anyone for his low payment but himself. You have to be attentive, and possibly sneaky. (Sneak a peek at others paychecks if possible 😉. He was too busy cutting patterns for Heathers, Karens, and Beckys, enjoying the upfront glamour and perks to look at the numbers... you can't sit back on blind faith or sit back and rely on a friendship ( Anna Wintour) when it comes to your money. This is a cautionary tale.

You don't know what you are talking about. Just making statements without facts or real knowledge. He opened doors for Black designers ( Lafayette 144, Toulouse Brendan, Willie and Toukie Smith to name a few). You clearly don't understand the difference between "putting on a front" and surviving. Many trailblazer have put up with sh#t to make it better for those that come behind him. He helped and supported Black models early in the game (Tyra, Naomi, Beverly, Wannakee, Also and more) Fashion Commentators Bev Smith benefited from his presence in the industry. Twenty years ago she wouldn't have been able to mop the floors at The Met much less get an invite to the galas. Finally I was able to get a job as a dresser during Fashion Week because of Mr. Talley. I was a temp at Vogue. He saw something in me and made a recommendation. He didn't have to. He could have treated me like I was invisible the way everyone else did. The job at Fashion Week led to others. A dresser is the one that dresses the models during the show. When they get to the runway they better have everything on and styled according to the picture or you don't work again. I did well and tried to create the same opportunity given to me for others. Mr. Talley broke into this business as a Black Gay man with tremendous talent when most in the industry didn't want him to shine their shoes. He was constantly being undermined and misunderstood. He has NEVER been fully respected and appreciated for the crap he was subjected to. Shame on you for marginalizing his contributions and what he went through by making such ignorant statements. Many Black folks in the fashion industry, straight and gay, models, dressers, photographers, tailors, and seamstress owe him a debt of gratitude we can never repay. Hopefully his movie will help educate the cynical and clueless. Thank you ALT --for who you are and the mentor you have been to so many!

Andre Talley is a legend. However Mr. Talley sat in a seat of power and influence during his tenure at Vogue. Yet Andre never lifted a finger to bring diversity into Vogue. Anna Wintour sits at the helm of Vogue but if Talley really wanted diversity at Vogue during his tenure there, it would have happened. Talley wants to play the victim regarding his wages at Vogue. I honestly find it hard to believe Talley was not made aware of this more recently than he claims. In terms of his home, Talley is wasting legal fees because NY State does not honor a "gentleman's agreement"as a legal binding contract. Talley could better use his finances on moving to his native home in the south and enjoy his retirement and receive all the accolades he does deserve for his influence and impact in the fashion world.

That’s not how it works. Read his book before speaking criticism. This man is VERY woke and he did advocate for brown models in his own, unique way. We can’t all stand with a billboard and shout it from the mountainTops. It takes time and careful planning in these predominately white spaces.

      1. Pointing out pay inequity isn't "playing the victim:" it's pointing out a vice--one that widely affects people of color and women in most professions.
      2. You say you doubt that Mr. Talley was not "made aware" of wage disparities earlier. Made aware by whom--and why? Do you know the salaries of all your co-workers? If brave, investigate it--and see how race and gender play a role.
      3. Talley had influence over pompous, pretentious Wintour, but no power. His word went only as far as it helped $ell Vogue mags. He pushed to get Beyonce and Rihanna on covers, but not Black women of a more African aesthetic; Wintour was stuck on white and he on white-ish because that's what the monied feel comfortable seeing.
      3. IF the people he trusted about the home were worth trusting, he wouldn't need the courts. Honorable people keep their word without courts. He thought the lessons he learned in the South as a boy did not apply up north; they do.
