So, to explain the end. The reason the lack rotation didn't result in two-face when it was really long was because the orbit was still changing where the sun hit. That's also why around 320 was the most extreme, it was the closest to 365, one year. You'd need one rotation per revolution to become twoface. Also known as being tidally locked. And the snowball at the end was because increasing the orbital period also moved the earth farther from the sun. You can see in all that mess around the sun that mars and everything is much closer, and the next planet outward from earth is saturn after he increases the orbital period.
Well, that and it isn't a planet anymore, but is described as a moon orbiting Jupiter, so that probably would also make Gray happy in killing everyone off that way...

Gray:scorches the earth…survives, freezes the earth, survives, throws asteroids at the earth, survives, creates wild weather, survives….makes the days longer….everyone dies. Yep, that’s gaming logic.
I heard something about the rotation of the Earth being very important for heat because of the molten core in a science article many years ago. Its extremely hot down there and as you slow down the Earth's rotation, so does the core and its heat. But eventually, when it gets too slow, the side facing the sun is simply cooked by the sun. Also it looks like it maybe moved a bit farther from the sun for some reason even though you didn't change the orbit? Weird... By the way, peak GreyStillPlays content is still definitely the My Summer Car series, but its good to see Universe Sandbox back 👍
Life likelihood isn't a measure of how many humans are still around. Don't forget there are extremophile microbes and countless things in the deep ocean that can handle surface effects for a long time. The universe isn't about human life and neither is this game.
Fun fact, even with 0 rotational speed, because of the orbit of the Earth, every part gets some Sun (which is visible at the end). The half Sun half darkness sceranio happens when the Earth is tidal locked, and the rotational period is one year, hence the spot was the biggest around 320 days. Real planets exist with this configuration, and they maybe suitible for life at their twilight zone.
1:11 the rotational period isn't exactly 1/day initially because Earth needs 23 hours and 56 minutes to complete a rotation around itself, rather than exactly 24 hours. That is also the reason why every fourth year has an additional day.

Of course the earth is getting colder. The sun is not getting hotter so the sunlit side is getting the same amount of energy/heat, but the dark side is getting increasingly more and more time to radiate the heat away with no replenish, so it becomes a vicious cycle of the cold side losing heat and the planet trying to find a temperature equilibrium between the cold and the lit side. but since the dark side getting no other heat source other than the lit side, it's like as if you opened all the doors and windows in half of your house at a winter night and then got surprised your house is cold despite the heating being on on the same temperature as always. And once you reach 365 days/rotation, the earth is now tidally locked to the sun, in other word, the same side always faces the sun. At such a planet life would only be possibly at the area where the dark and lit sides meet at an eternal dawn/dusk and winds would be insane.
Part of me wants one of these where it starts out as the regular video of slowly increasing/decreasing the mass/speed/temperature and then just abruptly fixing it back to normal to see how it effects things.
This is realistic too. Millions of years ago (dare I say billions), each day on Earth lasted only 6 hours. And that number gradually increased because Earth started spinning slower and slower. And it's still slowing down, though mankind will be long extinct by the time we realize this is actively happening.
@@whereismycup Yep. The Earth was at one point hit by meteorites for 20 million years straight, and these meteorites contained water particles - the water we have nowadays. I think that these meteorites and the fact that the Earth was only just formed were causing the planet to spin really fast, and it gradually slowed down as time went on. I feel like 500 million years from now, one day will last 25 hours instead of 24.
.997 is correct for the base rotation, it is why we have a leap year. The actualy lenght of day is 4 minutes less than 24 hours (24*60)-4 = 1436 minutes. 1436/24 = 59.833333333333333/60 = .997222222222222222
There was a Nova/NatGeo documentary on this. It was in their catastrophe what if series, it was called "Aftermath: When the Earth Stops Spinning". The rotation period slows gradually to match the orbital period, so that like Mercury, 1 day = 1 year, with the northern hemisphere's day being at Perihelion [Nothhern hemisphere summer] and the southern hemisphere's day at aphelion [NH winter] for the harshest effect of 6 months of daylight on the most people.
The temperature dropping because the Earth is getting more distant from the Sun. As the rotational speed decreases, the centripetal forces are weaker, leading to larger distance in the orbit of Earth.
that is not true. The distance increased because he increased the orbital period,, which leaded to higher orbit. Rotational period has nothing to do with the orbit.
Not true. The increase in the orbital period (at the end) is what moved the Earth away from the Sun, and that's because a larger orbit requires a lower orbital speed to match the weaker gravitational pull of the Sun; gravitational pull weakens with distance to a body. As for rotation (the majority of the video), it got colder (and hotter) because the low rotational speed meant the a single point on Earth had more time to cool down or heat up under the Sun.
Not true, if anything slowing down the earth should reduce tidal forces as the offset bulge created by spin should be reduced as well. In fact this is why tidal locking is an equilibrium state
