i was always wondering, do they shave those sables to get the hair or... you know...

Good question... so I looked into it. What I found is: The hair comes from the tail of the kolinsky, a type of weasel. The "finest" brushes are made from the male hair, but most brushes are a mix of male and female hair. The hair is harvested in Siberia and the Far East, either from trapping or as a byproduct of farming.

Pretty sure they don't "do in" the animal since it's more profitable to have the hair keep growing.
