    The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
    The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

    Fun fact: Hikaru said after the game on his Twitch stream that he played Knight g3 by mistakes since he confused some lines of his preparation in the open spanish. The move he actually prepared was bishop to g5, which is the best move. He also said that he was able to create a winning advantage thanks to that mistake because Fabi did not expect that move.

    That Giri quote is perfect, as it does not spoil the outcome for those who did not already know. Great game. Hikaru seems to miss some easy moves but spots much more difficult and brilliant ones. Maybe he doesn't take time to ask "did this super gm just hand me the game". The answer is almost always "no", but in the rare cases where it is "yes", you certainly don't want to overlook it.

    The fact you didn't talk about the COAT is a crime against chess.
    For those who didn't see, Hikaru put his coat on when he was sure he won. Fabi found yet another defensive resource so Hikaru took his coat off and started thinking hard. A few moves later Hikaru put his coat back on, played a few more moves and Fabi resigned.

    This was crazy to watch. Every time it seemed Fabi was out, Hikaru made a suspicious move and let him back in and it seemed like that went on for 2 or 3 hours straight. Had Fabi found one or two specific moves this game would amazing have been a draw . . . Had Hikaru played 2 or 3 better moves it would have been over a long time ago. Fabi showed pure determination here. I think this game was good character development for both players.

    • @johnkirk1772
      @johnkirk1772 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but as Hikaru said before: the quality of the games is far below their standards in the candidates for some reason.. and honestly I have to agree - hikaru is now contender? Hikaru who retired from classical and was never the best in the format regardless? And not like he wins by all best moves - lots of inaccuracies in these games - Magnus would wipe the floor with that competition
      Anhand, Giri are more capable atm - maybe the format needs to be changed to playoffs

    I hadnt noticed until recently, that you posted all the moves of the game on the description of every video, I think is something you should mention in the videos (as not everyone pays attention to the description), there are lots of position where I just wonder "why didn't they play X move?" and I used to manually place the pieces on liches analysis board to find out, so just importing the whole game becomes very useful. I know you try to cover a lot of lines and variants and explain why some moves can't be played, but there are just so many possibilities. Great videos btw.

    A brilliant win for Hikaru, also it makes the Fabi and Nepo game even more important, he's a whole point behind Nepo now, I was a little bit disappointed with Nepo drawing his game rather quickly against Ding with white pieces, but he didn't want to over push it I guess.

We cannot forget rapport as he can easily jump back into the race at least for the second place, which can be huge in this tournament due to magnus maybe not playing. And i believe rapport playing in world championship match would make it even more interesting due to his unusual and wild ideas

    What a brilliant game and review of the game by Agadmator. I was just wondering if it would be better (or perhaps distracting?) to give engine’s evaluation of White vs Black that usually visible as a bar graph at every move? I guess the reason for such a request is to see which moves that are particularly crucial in turning the tide around - according to the engine. Otherwise good job @agadmator as always.

    Was a really interesting game to watch. For me, seeing blacks light square bishop go from a useful piece in a potential mating net to practically a pawn, and seeing a knight on the corner of the board be legitimately useful, were the 2 most interesting bits of the game in isolation, but I appreciated the piece imbalance that Fabi opted into, and then watching Hikaru just wiggle out from the right was great fun.
