This song and the album Erotica were released along with a book she published called SEX, all 3 were a huge scandal - like HUGE, the front page of newspapers. The book was sealed in mylar, to see it you had to purchase it for $50 - it sold out instantly and is the best selling coffee table book of all time. The video is footage shot during the photo shoots for the book. She was literally the biggest pop star in the world, never has an artist of her caliber released a book like SEX, full of naked images of her in all different arrays of sexual acts. She didn't need to release such a graphic book but she did and people either hated her or loved her for it. Although a scandal, Madonna was a pioneer, a trend setter for female singers that followed...she usually gets acknowledged for it but not nearly enough.

1992. Madonna was coming off a decade of being the biggest and most famous pop star alive - outside of maybe MJ. So this was a HUGE risk and was daily news / controversy about sex and art and what is “taking it too far”….(Song, video, album, movie and nude coffee table book called SEX all released at the same time) You should react to her response to the critics from her follow-up album. Song called “Human Nature” which is an awesome R&B video and a big FUN to her critics.

This was so ahead of its time and inspired so many lives. I loved this era and how daring brave she was to give the middle finger to the “ so called moral majority”. She was advocating for the LGBT community when it was not cool or the right thing to do. She was a warrior for our community ! My IDOL.

I absolutely love this song and the video is amazing! And yes you are right like who else could do a song or video like this. Her confidence is way high but then again look at her she is gorgeous and her body amazing!
And this is the censored version, Madonna invited many celebrities into this video. And yes, the backlash she received for this was unparalleled, she has had a though life but she describes this period as the worst of her life, she was banned from everything after being at her peak, but she never let anyone saw her weakness and she carried on. She still sold millions, earned even more with her book and the Girlie Show Tour and made her mark at the VMAs.
Only Madonna could take such risks as Erotica (1992) and American Life (2003) because she owned her record label: Maverick Records, during that period.
When this song came out with the video there was an uproar, Madonna was compared to Satan and was humiliated and called in unspeakable terms. In response, Madonna wrote a song called Human Nature

She got crucified for this at the time, mainstream media basically painted her as the devil incarnate but in retrospective it was so ahead of its time and pure artistry with no limits or fear. Madonna is a trialblazer.

Oh, honey, controversial isn't a deep enough word for what madonna had to deal with thanks to the conservative masses. Madonnas image almost cost her her career. The woman had everyone going after her down to the Pope. They were calling her the devil herself. I remember it being so bad that if you claimed to like madonna you were branded a slut and perverted yourself. Erotica is a masterpiece of an album but because of the backlash at the time it was her lowest selling album with only selling 3 or 4 million worldwide. Today that's big but back then an artist as big as madonna was used to selling 20 to 35 million worldwide. Between the album, the sex book, and her Erotic Movie Body Of Evidence and Dangerous Game madonna was vilified and basically branded. It was sad and scary. The thing is, the album has some sexual songs, but it's a great album about relationships, break ups, and loss, especially losing loved ones to aids which was taking so many out of here. Aids was the black plague of the 20th century. Madonna really went through it. It would take 2 albums and a complete image makeover which gave us Bedtime Stories and Ray Of Light which is the album that saved her career. Now all these years later, erotica is the go to image if a pop star wants to show they have grown up, it is the album that is seen as the ultimate guide to feminist and female sexuallity and the book has just been entered as the most important books to be made by a female artist, I believe last year it got its own feature in a museum. Look all this up if you like to see if I'm right, i may have got the wrong information, but I do believe all this happened. I was 8 when the album and book came out and was forbidden by my mom to listen to madonna. Today, I am her number 1 fan with all the tours on DVD and the albums, and I have been to 4 tours.

How did we receive this in the early 1992s? I used to watch MTV Brazil. Many liked it, others hated it, nothing that doesn't happen even today with this artist. One might think that the 80's were marked by the HIV epidemic, perhaps it was natural for people to seek other forms of pleasure than right body contact, since S&M practices may have spread for that, I suppose.
