WATER FASTING & SALT: Should You Consume Sodium While Fasting? *IMPORTANT*

  • While almost everyone agrees you should consume WATER during fasting, the argument surrounding SALT is dangerously misunderstood.
►The Salt and Electrolyte Mix I Take: bit.ly/Fasting...
In this video we explain what electrolytes really are and how they work, how fasting impacts sodium, and how you can use salt to support your fat loss and health during fasting.
Please remember to see a doctor if you plan to fast longer than 24 hours! That initial blood work is critical to your safety :)
While I only ever fast for a few days at most to maintain peak physical performance, the information in this video can apply to both longer prolonged and extended fasting and shorter intermittent fasting as well.
So what’s the verdict? Is consuming salt in your water during a water fast a good idea? Is it ok to consume salt when fasting? Beyond just being ok to consume, could it actually be important to consume? Or on the flip side, could consuming salt during fasting be hurting our weight loss or health.
Salts are minerals which are comprised of positive and negative ions, joined together in solid form the charges cancel eachother out.
When they dissolve in a liquid solvent though, the stable combination of positive and negative breaks apart. These individual electrolytes carry their positive or negative charge as they float around separately.
So in this case with electrolytes which are dissolved in the liquid of your body.
Something key to understand about water is it will always be attracted to areas with a higher concentrations of these dissolved solutes.
At some point very early on, the bodies of early organisms figured out that the world around us is filled with these minerals, so as long as we ingest them, and transport the right minerals to the right places, we can use water’s attraction to them to in turn control our water balance in different compartments.
By adjusting the concentration of these positive and negatively charged solutes, which we call electrolytes, compartments can control their fluid balance through what is called osmotic pressure. A type of cell which needs less water can structure itself so it contains less of these electrolytes, a cell which needs more water, will contain more.
In extracellular spaces, the spaces outside of cells, which includes the blood and fluid around the brain, it is the positively charged sodium and negatively charged Chloride electrolytes which control the water levels.
Within cellular spaces, it is positively charged potassium and negatively charged phosphate.
Electrolytes also maintain an acid-base balance in our body, ensuring we don’t become too acidic or too basic.
Just as important though, they are also directly necessary for the generation of action potentials. Any time a signal is sent through a nerve, whether it be a thought in our brain a beat of our heart or a muscle flex, it is these positive and negatively charged electrolytes which are used to generate and transmit the signal.
In the extracellular fluid sodium accounts for 90-95% of the solute. In other words, it is sodium which is primarily responsible for keeping water in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and all the other areas between cells which don’t have direct access to a blood vessel. Now you know why that time you cut your mouth, the blood tasted salty.
So if sodium is keeping fluid in these spaces, that should mean that without sodium, water would have no reason to stay in these spaces. Worse yet, since the inside of the cells contain their own solutes, if there was no solute outside the cell, all the water would force its way into the cells.
Sodium levels are measured by sampling the blood, the healthy range is between 134-145 milliequivalents per liter. The term used by doctors when sodium levels get too low is Hyponatremia, and it occurs when the sodium levels in your blood fall below 135 mEq/L.
If levels drop below healthy levels and into hyponatremia, water begins leaving these extracellular spaces, this reduces the supply of blood and the fluid around the brain, as well as the fluid between cells. This loss of water from these important areas is called hypovolemia.
And remember all this water though needs somewhere to go, so it begins forcing into cells. Pushing them beyond their capacity stressing their membranes.
If levels drop below 124 a patient becomes severely hyponatremic, at which point death will eventually occur as cells begin bursting under the osmotic pressure of water leaving these spaces and pushing inside.
As it turns out, fasting is especially detrimental to sodium levels. During the onset of a water fast, a phenomenon occurs where the body actually goes into a steep negative sodium balance, excreting large amounts of sodium in the urine, far more sodium than you would lose if you simply cut your intake down to 0.
Thank you to Dr. Alan Goldhamer for explaining why he is known to not administer salt during fasts.

I know the video ran a bit long, but that is because this stuff is truly important. A lot of people don't know much about how these mechanisms work, but if you're going to be fasting it's definitely important to understand it or you could get into trouble :) Like I said, I care about you guys! haha

Great video. I'm on day 11 of my fast. I started with water only, but by day 7 I was weak and my resting heart rate was 97(!!!) While it's around 70 normally. I knew something was wrong, I found a cardiologist on TH-cam who said the imbalance in electrolytes affects the heart, so I started drinking water with pink Himalayan salt and potassium chloride dissolved. My energy came back, heart rate went down, blood pressure back to normal.
      Great video!

@@TinaTinTi that is going to be my plan as well... but I can't find electrolytes ANYWHERE. I have found himalayan salt, but potassium or in general electrolytes... no luck. @@alex73217 You should be able to easily get potassium chloride at the grocery store by buying "Lo-Salt" or "No Salt". These are about 50% or 100% potassium chloride (check the labels). For magnesium, the best solution is probably magnesium chloride, but that's harder to find -- I bought a bag of the stuff on eBay. Another possible source for magnesium is _epsom salts_ (magnesium sulfate). Personally I'd prefer to ingest chloride rather than sulfate, but getting a small amount of sulfur each day shouldn't be a problem. Many people report success with epsom salt in their electrolyte mixes, and the stuff is very cheap and easy to obtain.
These are the 3 primary electrolytes, so you can just make up a batch of "fasting salt" that contains a mix of these minerals (Na, K, Mg), and you'll have the electrolytes you need. I add a tablespoon of my mixed electrolyte salts to a 2-litre jug of water that I drink over the course of the day.
The primary electrolyte you need is ordinary *sodium* chloride (table salt). As noted in the video, potassium is actually stored _within_ cells, so as you lose weight and those cells are broken down via apoptosis, the potassium is released and recycled. Therefore you need much more sodium than either of the other two salts. On a long-term fast, it's also a good idea to also add a tiny bit of iodine as well (potassium iodide, or similar), since it's another element that is gradually depleted each day.

I was recently diagnosed with lupus and put on meds to treat my symptoms and control flare ups. I took my meds only when I felt a flare up coming on, but on my own, I dabbled with short water and GREEN JUICE fasts, alternating between the two. Fast foward 3 months to my follow up doc visit, my "ana" blood count was significantly lower than before, almost (ALMOST) asymptomatic and feeling great compared to previous months. However, my doctor refuses to acknowledge that the fasting has anything to do with it, and as a matter of fact keeps advising AGAINST the fasting, insisting instead that I should continue my medication use AS PRESCRIBED (which make me feel awful, btw)... WHAT THE HECK?? I am currently looking for a NEW doc and continuing my intermittent fasting, with periodic 48-72hr fasts sprinkled in between.

I'm doing my second long fast, the first time I wasn't being strict and just having water. By the fifth day I had muscle pain, I was dizzy, it sucked. My mind was okay, but my body felt like I constantly needed to rest. I did 13 days.
I'm about to complete my seventh day today, not as strict, in the sense that I do drink coffee with some milk in the morning, tea, and other infusions throughout the day, by the third day I started to get that familiar muscle pain, so I got a potassium supplement and to take some salt. I feel normal most of the time.

All I had was a lot of water and sometimes salty water and I can say that salty water helps deal with hunger greatly, I felt very good over all this time and was able to work well (I do programming). Old guy at work (77) was lecturing me on how I shouldn't eat that much. I also eat a regular lunch and dinner with added Himalayan salt in it. I go get my blood work every 6 months. Sodium is in the green.
I'm 46 so I'm not some young pup that can eat anything they want. I am 48 hours into my Only water fast and 5 more days to go of 7 days, at the time of writing this. Thank you for this video.
It is an important topic, and for those who are doing it (i'm at hour 64) and for the first time - it can be worrying. People who put themselves into 48+ hrs fasting, i hope they do all they can - to make sure, it is, overall to their benefit.
That's why this video needs to be as long as it is!
From birth to adulthood, we are used to eating - and while i have been doing OMAD / IF - 24+ hours is not something one is mentally prepared for.
The reason i landed on this video is because i woke up this morning with a light headache.
    Day1
At hour 28 during the fasting (3am) - i woke up and instinctively went and had salt - don't know how, woke up from sleep, went to the loo, and on the way back, swallowed 2 pinch's of salt - and it felt good!
    Day2
Went cycling for 50kms, it was 31c temp and sweat a lot for 3 hours - where is the salt coming from. I know there was a lot of salt in my sweat, as a drop touched my lips. This was a mistake - on day 2 i should not have done it - but it felt great, and i wanted to do more. This is the strange thing about fasting - one feels much more energetic - body and MIND.
    Day3
I plan to end it tomorrow morning, so i may have an 85 hour fast.
Have lost 2kgs i think - but that's not the intention, and its water loss afaik.

I just remembered being a little surprised because I've heard people drink LOTS.. maybe I drank 1 cup a day or less ? Barely need ONE sip here and there.. LITERALLY ONE SMALL SIP a few times a day.. I remember that clearly.. my only simptoms mostly the last half were just not having energy, I had mental clarity.. would have loved to DO STUFF.. my mind was capable, not my body.. and I broke the fast cuz I was carrying a couple of heavy bags for approx 30-40 steps and I felt like I was gonna faint.. but if that didn't happen maybe I would have kept going.. what HORRENDOUS thing did happen.. as soon as I broke my fast I started losing incredible amounts of hair while brushing and in the shower.. i think it went on for approx 6 months.. I had neve seen anything like it.. FULL HANDFULS OF PACKED hair. I was sure I was gonna go totally bald.. I was soooo scared thinking I was gonna have to get wigs, or that something else might be horribly wrong with me.. as it is I have super fine hair.. I tried to not let my family know cuz I didn't want them worrying, but my daughter saw the amount of hair one day and totally freaked out .. Iost about half my hair and I still haven't gotten it all back.. it's still thinner than it was before the fast. I wonder if the salt would have prevented that.. and also wondering EVEN MORE if my bones are messed up now because of the lack of sodium . and if it can be reversed.. I would really appreciate if you would know and tell me please

Then I take a Calcium/Magnesium capsule daily. Since salt is already in mayo, Dijon, olives, Progresso soups, albacore...etc., I think I am already getting too much sodium. This is why I switched to Morton's half salt. As you have clearly pointed out, we need to find an optimal balance of salt.

Taking in salt in liquid form reduces hunger for me and improves concentration while I'm fasting.
If I was eating a lot of salty foods I'd be more hungry, craving the saltines of foods.

This video is extremely helpful and informative. I have done a couple water fasts over the last few years and I actually experienced a natural craving for salt water during the fasts.
There seems to be a stigma against fasting and confusion between starvation versus the fasting state. I just wanted to convey may respect and appreciation of the research you put into this, ergo, I subscribed.
    Keep up the good work.

Doctors can be extremely valuable. But always trusting everything a doctor says can get you into a lot of trouble. I’m finding I have to learn a lot about my body and make my own decisions about what I do. Media and doctors spread a lot of wrong information and sometimes downright lies. Good luck!🍀👍

Great Video delighted to understand the logic and very easy to understand. Thanks.
Here is how I completed my first time fasting and done 60 hours of water only (no teas, coffees, or food)... no problem.
On the first day, I got mild dizziness and that was it, and none on the second day. First thing in the morning 1 glass of lukewarm distilled water with 1 teaspoon of Himalayan salt. After 30 mins I take 1 magnesium pill 375mg, 1 Potassium 99mg pill, 1 B1 pill 100mg, and 1 big spoon of MCT oil. During the day I might take 2 more Potassium pills, maybe 1 more spoon of MCT oil, and drink about 2-3 liters of distilled water (I just boil tap water where I live (in Ireland tap water is drinkable) and let it cool and it becomes drinkable distilled water). If I get mild headaches I drink another cup of lukewarm distilled water with 1 teaspoon of Himalayan salt.
I had no problem going on long walks for hours and doing small workouts.
I'm fasting for detox/health reasons, not for weight loss.

This was very informative and answered a lot of my questions. So, this info made me think of those old western movies, when the cowboys went through desserts and got so dehydrated that they were close to death. Then a hero finds them and fed them water but they were always careful to only let them have a little bit at a time and gave them some kind of jerky to eat. Somehow they knew drinking too much after such a large scale dumping of sodium would have been dangerous.

  • @pocopico7409
    @pocopico7409 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So much for this info. I was doing modified keto and recently started adding intermittent fasting. My labs just showed that my potassium and sodium are now slightly HIGH, not LOW. All the videos on TH-cam make it sound like keto and fasting are completely healthy, but they obviously aren’t when they throw your electrolytes out of balance. 🙄

I were fasting for two days drinking water only. I was 56.3kg in the early morning then my weight dropped to 55kg after a moderate intensity strength training for 45min in the afternoon on the first fasting day. I weighted 54.9kg in the early morning of next fasting day. I did not do exercise on the second day as I had a lightheaded. I also felt a bit tired and felt like I were walking on air (I did not have muscle soreness though). I weighted 54.3kg the next morning. I were drinking plenty of water to stop my stomach from growling and a cup of long black each morning.
I would put some Himalayan salt into water next time.

@Dorian Wilson You've done an amazing job pointing out the dangers of refeeding syndrome, which are very real and very serious.
Looking at your preferred electrolyte supplement, I was confused at the amount of potassium since the FDA (and similar agencies in other countries) disallow supplements with more than ~100mg of potassium in a single dose.
It does seem odd that the allowed amount is so small compared to daily allowance/recommended daily intake (~4000mg) and lots of people are angry that the allowed dose is so small. However, it turns out there's good reason for this - apparently even relatively small concentrated doses of potassium can cause bowel lesions, or worse, hearth arrythmia and other potentially fatal effects.
Confused, I've asked pharmacists and doctors about electrolytes in general and in the context of fasting in particular and they basically agree say that in clinical settings (whether medically supervised fast or patients who can't eat or risk electrolyte imbalances for other reasons) electrolytes are continually monitored with blood and other tests and only carefully tweaked to remain within very tight ranges since even small perturbations can be very dangerous. Messing around with electrolytes yourself, without such monitoring, whether based on what is on paper sounds calculations or not, is not recommended and can be incredibly dangerous.
I don't know where this leaves us. For me, I only really do 2, max 3 day fasts which probably don't deplete me that much anyway, and a bit of Hydralyte (regular electrolyte tablets that don't have so much potassium) is what I use. (not saying it's good or bad, it's just what I do)
I'm posting this wall of text because overall I think your video is good but I would be interested to hear what you have about this - it would suck if you inadvertently are actually giving advice which is potentially similarly harmful to that doled out by you-know-who.
