I remember when I first saw Lacktown in the movie. I was delighted at how alien yet familiar Laketown was portrayed with it's different architecture and everything. Reminds you of what a rich and detailed world Tolkein created with so many untold tales.
Hearing this song, you can hear a proud and yet powerful verse informing you of the great city that the people of Laketown once came from. Then it is followed by the dark tones that became of it and how they only fell farther down, as well as those that only intend to sink it into ruin. It has a beautiful mixture of these powerful tones that soon mesh into the poverty and tragedy of the place.
There's something that reminds me of the Rohan Theme in this tune. Both Rohan and Lake town are normal Humans (Not numenorians), somewhat struggling, living in the shadow of a greater kingdom (Gondor and Erebor), developed in the second movie (TTT, TDOS), it was probably done intentionally. Although this isn't my favorite Hobbit Theme, I think this is pretty clever.
Both Rohan and Laketown men are "Men of the Twilight", not being directly influenced by the deities of Valinor. In the appendices of LOTR, Rohan is said to have emerged from Mirkwood, so they might actually be related :D
They are also called "Northmen" since they are descendants from the people of Rhovanion (Lands between the sea of Rhun and the Anduin) the Kingdom of Rhovanion was taken over by Easterlings so the people went North to the Anduin and Dale and Laketown, Rohan was formed when Northmen went south(from the northern Anduin) to help Gondor with an Easterling invasion after a great victory the Steward gave the Northmen the land that would become the Kingdom Rohan.
I absolutely love how Laketown was portrayed in the movies. The scenery, the music. Tolkien created a world so vibrant and vast with different cultures, and different locations that it just sends shivers down my spine thinking about it. I am so in love with Middle Earth. ❤️

They were under-manned and under-equipped, which goes against the book I agree, since I liked the look of their weapons and armour and wished we could have seen more of them in battle. Still, the the Lake Men were portrayed as fully prepared to fight for their freedom and their lives even sandwiched between the much better equipped Dwarves and Elves.
Anyone else think harpsichords sound really creepy no matter how they are used? Seriously, every piece I have ever heard one used in has a creepy, foreboding feel to it, even if its not intended to. If you don't know the sound, it is the slightly grating/twanging metallic-sounding instrument that starts up around a minute in or so (slightly more perhaps).

Lake Town is the coolest! Serious question: why can't a town like this exist in real life? Think of how many people/businesses it would draw...and everyone gets around by bridges and canoes.
It was one book stretched into 3 movies; issues were bound to arise, like how Smaug was made a threat for only about 10 minutes at the start of the 3rd movie.
