Cloudspire can be quite intimidating. I'm not sure I would recommend playing with 4 players your first time out, definitely start with 2 player duels, learn your faction, and gear up to playing at higher player counts once people are experienced, otherwise there could be a lot of confusion. Before I joined the US Navy back in January, Cloudspire was my go to game for competitive nights with the boys. Now I miss it even more watching this video.

Looks a little like Meeple Wars with Spires. Nice quick explanation as you do so well.
This looks really cool, but I can already tell that it'd *need* to be a thing I play with one friend, two max, until my group had figured out how the factions actually work. Diving in with a full four player game sounds like the sort of utter chaos I'd love but would make half my group pull their hair out, haha.
Yeah, its complexity is not to be under-estimated. I reckon 1-2 2 player games each to learn the factions, then dive in with 4 player could work. If people stick to their home factions for that first game and dont want to swap around.
Stay away from four players with this game till ALL four KNOW their factions, KNOW the rules, and KNOW what they're doing. Otherwise you'll be looking at a painfully long game. Two or three player games are best, perhaps with the two player game being the best best.

People keep saying that whenever i do one of these complex games ;) Still, had to leave a little bit out on this one. Like upgrading heroes, and exactly how the purchased terrain tiles work.

Unfortunately not. I'm in Germany, Europe, so I couldn't be further away but dreaming to live in NZ one day.
Also, any other games people can think of that have that "pre planned movement + units that can react" thing in them?

I absolutely love this game. It has skyrocketed to my top 3 games. The solo and co-op scenarios are really good too. But you are absolutely right, it is super complex and requires a lot of thinking. But playing through the scenarios helps learn a lot of it IMO.

Lately I'm liking heavy games in theory but when it's time to play I reach for the light and medium games... well, when it was folks meeting in person, anyway.
The playtime on this is pretty reasonable. A 2 player game can be 30-60 mins

My fiancee and I put this game on our wedding registry about 5 hours before you posted this video--funny timing! It would definitely be our "heaviest" game (in both a literal and figurative sense), but we're both excited about the idea of an immersive experience and like the fact that it has solo, co-op, and competitive modes.

Cheers Brendan. I think the point about it being heavy is a good one to make. A lot of people will get swept up in the presentation, and get it, and then go "wow, this is tough". Best wishes for the wedding!

Cheers Richard, and yes, I will cover too many bones as they sent me a copy as well. When is an issue though, as due to lockdown, testing games is a challenge at the moment. Could be a few months off.

Which i will definitely play to learn the core mechanics, but to review i need to play with others as well
@@3MBG Yep, fair point. Hmmm, now it would be easy to play remotely with someone who has their own copy of the game (could be played with only one copy as well, but not as much fun to not be rolling your own dice since that's a huge part of the game)
Hopefully, based on how COVID is tracking in NZ, it should be only a month or so till the groups get back together. Between now and then, already tested and ready to go on the channel are Dale of Merchants, The Reckoners, Sabotage, and many more.
How's the co-op mode? Does it have the same depth and fun as competitive mode?
Didn't test is unfortunately. I played a bunch of two and three player competitive games, and then the lockdown happened.
The Co-op mode for Cloudspire is like the solo mode, where you have a series of pre-made scenarios to play through. However, you can play the competitive mode 2v2 if you want to run team matches.
Wow, it has a 4.16 weight on BGG. I don't think I'll be able to convince my wife to give this game a play :(
It definitely looks intriguing though.
I personally think the 4.16 weight rating on there is a little high.
Aside from the two games you mentioned at the end of this video, do you recommend any games with a tower/base defense mechanism? Not based on the quality of the game, just the application of that mechanism.
There is "defence grid" but I've not played it. Its based on a PC game i played an awful lot though.
But its a genre I haven't played much myself
The modular map tiles remind me of Mage Knight, which I LOVE very much. Played it so much that the tiles are showing bad wear and tear. How's the tiles quality compared to MK, which I know you owned (first video I've watched from you!).
As the tiles are neoprene, they basically don't wear. And the way the poker chips are made, about the only way to put wear on them would be an angle grinder.

Good plan. Yeah, with my time code limit i miss out a bunch, always good to dig deeper if my vids catch your eye with a game.
I want to jump in on this, but frankly, the cost is absurd, especially compared to a already robust market of MOBAs on PC.
