Manirathnam was the inspiration in my life to become a filmmaker but sadly I dont pursue that career anymore. But I will continue to be a film buff and love films for the rest of my life thanks to watching Mani's movies when growing up.
like the way he called Rajeev name 30:31...it's so affectionate..also Mani sir mentioned I am not responsible for the transfer...I think Mani sir style of film making is also about economics wherein the technical team(music director, photographers...etc) have a royoality and everyone has bite into the money that is made. Also rights reserved for each department. Something that is heard of only in West. Mani Sir You Rock... salute you for all movies, clips, songs and emotions. years of influence of art in us. Subtle way of telling story... awesome
Fantastic session. Every word of Mani Sir is a gold. He speaks crystal clear to the context with a lotta humour and thought provoking ideas making sure it is understood even by a laymen. Though i enjoy, jaw drop, analyze and talk about films of his, I didn't know so many small things really mattered a lot until i saw him talk about them. Especially when he said abt the tree that doesn't stand right - OMG :) Excellent questions by the interviewer. He was absolutely articulate. Thanks you so much Mani Sir.
Mani Ratnam sir is an absolute world class talent of a director. Our luck that he is Indian. What an enriching interview where we got a small snippet into his thoughts and process behind some of his films. Each one is special covering different themes and communities across India with a quite persuasive and wholly original subtext. That is the beauty of Mani Ratnam. No film is ever the same film.
Thanks for the video BFI! We loved it! Mani is our pride, as is AR Rahman! Both from Chennai. By the way, please include clips. There is no copyright infringement in showing video recorded clips playing on big screen. Clips, clips, clips... Please! We get delighted and relive the moments over and over again, every time we see a Mani sir film clip. We instantly identify with it. The absence of clips is killing us the whole pleasure, though we loved the interview absolutely.
Read this to know what makes Mani Ratnam great. We know how powerful Silence is. Only Mani Ratnam has the guts to place a Silence between dialogues filled with AR Rahman music in the background. It allows us to capture the scene meditatively and connects emotionally with us. Those of us who have lower attention spans and are digital addicts may not like it but his films are like a spiritual journey. COntrast this with modern pure entertainment masala films filled with noise, frequent and unnecessary change of camera positions which leads to a restless mind.
It's not a crime to like your work, sir. Such modesty is not required. Of course, modesty is part of the culture. Deeply ingrained by predecessors. But it's not necessary. Nayagan or Mouna Ragam require to be preserved in Cinematic literature. They are masterpieces, like many other movies from your good self. So, please love your work. It fuels passion. Helps create better products next time.
I know it’s 4 years since it’s uploaded, could you guys at least edit the description and add links to the actual clip you are referring to, if it’s a copyright infringement- may be we will watch the actual clip
The leading conversations and the moderator are - much as i hate to compare - much more superior to the retrospective with the same man that followed this in the Museum of Moving Images in NYC.
a good visualizer always be more understandeable what exactly want from him , but nourishing but greatest silent does the artist really makes the same wavelenght move , yes thus what all the movie director end up with particular comfort level cannot explore than anything

Great interview with my favourite director.
43:36. I asked her to do my first film, she refused...so i married her :-)
😍😍😍
This video is GOLD.
The interviewer did his job par excellence.
+Selva Kumar Sure, but he desperately tries to establish the fact that he is a filmmaker too. Nonetheless, he is great.
It's Mani's show all the way
The gentleman interviewing Mr. Ratnam is PETER WEBBER, a renowned BAFTA/Oscar/Golden Globe nominated British filmmaker.
Greatest Indian director.... a fan from lucknow
