Alk was dose over time so it increases over time. That will not stress the sps at all. Know if it dumped alot at once and shot it up quick. Then you would of came home to dead sps. I have noticed that hight alk that was increased slowly does nothing to SPS same with it dropping as low as 5 4dkh all is fine and happy.

Great video Devin! Something to keep in mind/potentially do: You can lower your Alk in your make up saltwater using a strong acid. For instance you can add a few drops of muriatic acid to freshly made saltwater and it will drastically lower the Alk (and pH). It’s extremely important to vigorously aerate the water after adding the acid to bring the pH up and fully dissipate the acid. Once the pH is up the muriatic acid is no longer active and the water is safe to use. The use case for this: Lowering high Alk through multiple water changes with water that has 7-8.5 dKH naturally will take forever. Dropping the Alk in your water to 4 or 5dKh will allow you to lower it quicker with less water changes. Obviously never put muriatic acid in any water with life though.

    • @RyanPV
      @RyanPV ปีที่แล้ว

I’ve done this before and was able to lower the Alk to a reasonable level without having to make up insane amount of make up water, dropping nutrients etc only for minimal reduction of Alk. No loss of life or coral. Just don’t drop it too quick. It’s pretty easy to calculate your Alk after using. Say you do a 20% WC with 5dKh water 14 dKH x 8 + 5dKh x 2 / 10 = 12.2dKh after the water change.

I’ve just started dosing kalkwasser. It’s in my ATO I know we shouldn’t but it’s there until I get a doser. PH is 8.3 and dKH is 14. My tank is the best it’s ever been. Zoas are expanding so quickly you can see the difference day by day. My Kenya trees are self fragging so much my sump is full of them now. Mushrooms etc are expanding like never before. Parameters can’t be too bad then for this to happen.

    • @ReefDudes

    • @mybeachshack

Well, that is encouraging to me ! Same thing was happening when I began Kalk. I use seawater with a pH of 7.6 and decided I needed to bump that up. I panic when I see the dkh at 10.5 but the PH now is 8. Corals do look improved, but CA is krazy at 590. I have switched to Soda Ash in pursuit of higher PH, all ya'all's reports of high dkh being no prblm is helpful to calm my nerves ! 😂

U recently interviewed a guy who's farm runs Kalkwasser to chase PH, he commented not to worry if your kalk sees a swing like that as long as the ph is on target... sounds like he was on track? That conversation convinced me to give it a go. it's been working out great so far!

Good luck man! I really hope nothing happens to that beautiful tank. I can't believe I saw this video today. I nearly did the same thing from work this afternoon. My alk was looking a little low after my reservoir had run dry so I kicked it on for a few minutes from the office. Fortunately I remembered to turn it off but something told me to refresh my browser and when I did the switch was still on. I have seen that happen before with Fusion. I turned it off and refreshed again to verify and all is well. But it very much could have been a problem and I considered myself lucky.

When I turn outlets on in fusion, I 1) switch on, 2) switch off, 3) switch to auto. For some reason, when I switch to auto it will not change state to what it should change to, it will maintain its previous state until some script makes it change state.

Uh oh,, man my 6 month old tank sits at 13.8 Alk. PH 7.9. I started Kalk to get PH up and grow coralline, 2 weeks later hooked up Trident and it was giving me Alk warning (too high) over 14 dkh. I stopped the Kalk/kamora because the high Alk scares me now. I’m fish and shrimp only,, nobody seems to care. For giggles I put 2 tbsp of Vinegar in last night and it maybe took me down .3 . Low PH and crazy high Alk. 300 gallon. Here is what I think is going on. I’m a bare bottom, but paved the bottom with 3” oceans wonders square frag tiles…. I think it’s the aragonite coating? Love your content, never miss anything. I have 9 tangs, 3 angelfish and of course clowns! Do I have a fish health issue?

Would additional outlet programming have saved you? I think you run a Trident so it could have helped as well.
I have these lines in my DOS advanced programming for the Alk head:
If pH > 8.40 Then OFF
    If Alkx9 > 9.00 Then OFF
Or pick the thresholds as you see fit.

I love my APEX gear (and I have had GHL, FOCUSTRONIC as well) but this is one of the stubborn issues that they should have solved in the DOS a long time ago: JUST GIVE US THE HABILITY TO DO A ONE OFF MANUAL DOSE AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON!!! This is what caused your issue. If you had the option to tell the DOS to dose 70ml and hit enter, the thing would have just executed your command. All other half decent dosers in the market allow you to do this.

    • @ReefDudes

Corals don’t have much interest in what ALK is as long as there is Calcium to supplement it and in balance with the available carbonates. I always tell reefers to monitor the low range of alk and not to chase the high number. A tank with a large coral/bio load can consume all the carbonates available in the water column in a days photoperiod or less… The coral keeps synthesizing and if the carbonates are gone skin will peel because of the buoyancy of saltwater deposited below the tissue has none of the concrete that the coral anchors down.
